Hello, Friends; Does anyone have any further information on this family? Her death was reported in the Cornish-Gen Digest, Vol. 7, Issue 266 from the West Briton 8 August 1856 BMDS. It is the DONNITHORNE name that interests me, as my Hugh PHILLIPS married Elizabeth Donnithorne on 03 Apr 1839 in Perranzabuloe. I show her parents as Thomas DONNITHORNE and Elizabeth MILL. I am just wondering if this lady who died could have been my Elizabeth’s mother. ”At PENZANCE, on Tuesday last, the wife of Mr. Thomas DONNITHORNE, aged 72 years.” Thanks to all. Meli
Hi Meli, FreeBMD shows the death of Elizabeth DONNITHORNE in the September quarter of 1856, Penzance, vol. 5c, p.187. FreeCEN shows that in the 1851 census of Penzance, Thomas DONNITHORNE (65, butcher) was with wife Elizabeth (65), and children Thomas (37, grocer), Charles (24, confectioner journeyman) and Mary (22). In 1841 census of Penzance, the family consisted of Thomas (50-54, butcher), Elizabeth (50-54) and Elizabeth (20-24), John (19, shoemaker), Charles (14, carpenter), and Nicholas (12, painter). Aside from the fact that your Elizabeth was married in Perranzabuloe, not Penzance, it seems that this family had a daughter Elizabeth DONNITHORNE with them in 1841, two years after your Elizabeth married Hugh PHILLIPS. It seems unlikely that the death in the paper is of your Elizabeth's mother. I'm not sure where you're getting the information that your Elizabeth married in Perranzabuloe, which was in the Truro registration district. FreeBMD shows the marriage of Hugh PHILLIPS and Elizabeth DONNITHORNE in the June quarter of 1839, registration district of Redruth, vol.9, p.269. There is also a marriage of Susan DONNITHORNE, same reference, to either Henry Symons JAMES, George REED or William TINGLE. There was a Thomas & Elizabeth DONNITHORNE couple in Redruth who may still be candidates for your Elizabeth's parents. In 1841, they were transcribed as DONITHORNE, Thomas (45-49, smith) & Elizabeth (45-49), with William (20-24, smith), Mary (15-19), and Hugh & Jane (10). In 1851, they were transcribed as DONETHORNE, Thomas (59, master blacksmith employing 3 men), wife Elizabeth (59, beer retailer) with children Jane (23, dressmaker), Hugh (23, smith), and married son William (32, smith) with his wife Caroline (29) and their children John (5) and Mary Elizabeth (3). In the 1861 census, Thomas (70) and Elizabeth (67) DONNITHORNE were still in Redruth with children and grandchildren, so this Elizabeth cannot be the one who died in 1856.
