Thanks to everyone who replied. The mystery has been solved; he was Algenon William CASSON /CASSAN. b. 1824/5 Frome Somerset. Died 10 May 1886. His name had been a thorn in my side for the last 3 or 4 Tywardreath Registers. I have the list of Vicars of St. Andrews and as Deborah says he does not appear on it, but he appears in the registers that often I think it would be a fair guess he was the Assistant Curate at St. Andrews for quite a number of years. It's sad that he passed on before the Church supplied him with a printer that put out material that was legible. hehehe Happy days, John Newcastle N.S.W. -----Original Message----- From: Deborah O'Brien Sent: Thursday, September 27, 2012 11:59 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [CORNISH-GEN] I need assistance deciphering handwriting. Hi listers, I hope some may be able to assist me in deciphering 2 things in the Tywardreath marriage register 1837 – 1860 on the Latter Day Saints Family Search page I have come across this occupation twice now in marriages I am transcribing, but I can not work it out, I tried several sites for old English occupations and can find nothing like it, I have tried looking on the OPC site, but none of the marriages I have sought for about the last 25 keeps saying “sorry nothing found”. the 2nd thing I’m trying to decipher is the ministers Surname. His Christian name is Algenon but I can’t get the Surname. It appeared frequently in the Tywardreath 1861 – 1907 register. I think he must have been the assistant curate at St. Andrews. The marriage I’m looking at is in the 1837- 1860 Tywardreath Marriage Register Image not page no: 135 the bottom marriage between Nicholas JOHNS and Maria PENROSE nee: TRELEVEAN. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Didn't you know John, all members of the clergy go to the same school as dentists, doctors and pharmacists to learn drunken spider fell into the ink well writing <g> Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > It's sad that he passed on before the Church supplied him with a printer > that put out material that was legible. hehehe > > Happy days, > John Newcastle N.S.W.
Unfortunately, in those days, vicars stayed in office until they shed their mortal coil. I had one where either the curate or the neighbouring vicar did the honours on most occasions, the incumbent returning now and again to grace them with his presence and very spidery hand-writing. I think he was well into his nineties when he died - poor man, it shouldn't have been allowed.
