    3. Hi Jim This is a classic example where posting a census reference at least would help others to help you ;-) After some digging on Ancestry I eventually found Elizabeth in 1901 as Elizabeth M PAULE born 1849 Christon Devon (Christow Devon) (I have entered a correction to RULE) 1901 = RG13; Piece: 2243; Folio: 81; Page: 4 Search not helped by Ancestrys latest incarnation at customer annoyance (their latest search which I find rather hopeless) Having then found the 1911 census some comments The 1911 should be filled in by the head of household, in your case it looks as if if Elizabeth filled it in partially, listing herself as "wife" and "widow" marriage 26 years duration birthplace Christow (no County) The enumerator has added/altered the "wife" to "head" and thinking the Christow was Charlestown has added arleston to the Ch, crossing out the ristow, adding "Cornwall" in brackets to all three birthplaces The enumerator has then signed it on behalf of Elizabeth as presumably she was not in when he collected the schedule The 1911 being in her own hand suggests William had died pre 1911 (unless she was deliberately being misleading) the 26 years duration was Elizabeth's misinterpretation of the instructions, she considered herself as a married woman albeit a widow, the census was not interested in that, only still married women so the enumerator crossed that out, it had no bearing on when William died Camborne was in the Redruth registration district at that time so any event should be registered there (assuming he died there of course) William was enumerated as being born 1852 according to the 1901 census, In the Redruth reg district there are two William RULE deaths registered 1901 to 1911 Deaths Dec 1905 Rule William 48 Redruth 5c 142 Deaths Sep 1909 RULE William 78 Redruth 5c 130 The 1909 reg has a findagrave entry which suggests its correct (husband of Mary aged 78) So the 1905 event is a potential with a clerical or informant error I would enquire of the now Cornwall registration district and ask if they could check that 1905 entry, Elizabeth may have registered the death otherwise an address may be mentioned It is possible the initial registration information was given or taken wrongly or an error occurred when the information was passed to the GRO Whilst hardly proof, there does not appear to be a William RULE b 1857 +/- 2 years in Cornwall 1901 NB unfortunately death registrations are sparse in detail and if the informant was other than Elizabeth and the address not recorded there may not be enough to prove its your man, however only asking will show that, some offices will do it freely, others will want you to buy the cert regardless Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 13/06/2015 22:52, Jim DeGraff via wrote: > I'm looking for some guidance on next steps I can take to find a > death or burial record for my 2x great-grandfather, William RULE. 3. Just replying to thank you (John, Liz, Nivard, Kathryn, and Corinne offline) for replying to my post requesting help with finding documentation for William Rule's death and/or burial. As pointed out, I could have provided a few more particulars about William RULE to help people to help me better. I'll do that next time. Also in re-reading my post, I see that I was off by a century in stating that William's marriage to Elizabeth was in 1985. It was obviously 100 years earlier. And I was trying to be so careful! The replies were quite helpful in confirming some of my thinking and narrowing down my next steps. I had thought about the possibility of William emigrating to other lands where he might have died, but before searching elsewhere I first want to exhaust all leads in the Camborne area of Cornwall or in other parts of the U.K. My next step will be to check with the CRO on one of the possibilities that Nivard suggested. Thanks again, Jim DeGraff Houston, TX > Hi Jim > > This is a classic example where posting a census reference at least > would help others to help you ;-) > > After some digging on Ancestry I eventually found Elizabeth in 1901 as > Elizabeth M PAULE born 1849 Christon Devon (Christow Devon) > (I have entered a correction to RULE) > 1901 = RG13; Piece: 2243; Folio: 81; Page: 4 > > Search not helped by Ancestrys latest incarnation at customer annoyance > (their latest search which I find rather hopeless) > > Having then found the 1911 census some comments > > The 1911 should be filled in by the head of household, in your case it > looks as if if Elizabeth filled it in partially, listing herself as > "wife" and "widow" marriage 26 years duration birthplace Christow (no > County) > > The enumerator has added/altered the "wife" to "head" and thinking the > Christow was Charlestown has added arleston to the Ch, crossing out the > ristow, adding "Cornwall" in brackets to all three birthplaces > > The enumerator has then signed it on behalf of Elizabeth as presumably > she was not in when he collected the schedule > > The 1911 being in her own hand suggests William had died pre 1911 > (unless she was deliberately being misleading) the 26 years duration was > Elizabeth's misinterpretation of the instructions, she considered > herself as a married woman albeit a widow, the census was not interested > in that, only still married women so the enumerator crossed that out, it > had no bearing on when William died > > Camborne was in the Redruth registration district at that time so any > event should be registered there (assuming he died there of course) > > William was enumerated as being born 1852 according to the 1901 census, > > In the Redruth reg district there are two William RULE deaths registered > 1901 to 1911 > > Deaths Dec 1905 > Rule William 48 Redruth 5c 142 > > Deaths Sep 1909 > RULE William 78 Redruth 5c 130 > > The 1909 reg has a findagrave entry which suggests its correct (husband > of Mary aged 78) > > So the 1905 event is a potential with a clerical or informant error > > I would enquire of the now Cornwall registration district and ask if > they could check that 1905 entry, Elizabeth may have registered the > death otherwise an address may be mentioned > > It is possible the initial registration information was given or taken > wrongly or an error occurred when the information was passed to the GRO > > Whilst hardly proof, there does not appear to be a William RULE b 1857 > +/- 2 years in Cornwall 1901 > > NB unfortunately death registrations are sparse in detail and if the > informant was other than Elizabeth and the address not recorded there > may not be enough to prove its your man, however only asking will show > that, some offices will do it freely, others will want you to buy the > cert regardless > > Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > On 13/06/2015 22:52, Jim DeGraff via wrote: >> I'm looking for some guidance on next steps I can take to find a >> death or burial record for my 2x great-grandfather, William RULE.
