I have also been in touch with the CWGC online but without success. As a check I put in the details of my brother-in-law, Malcolm James Banks, a Lancaster captain in the R.A.F.,who was shot down over Hanover. We have visited his grave there. Surprise, surprise, his details didn't come up either. The site does appear to have changed as previously I was able to obtain all sorts of info. and print-outs which I now have in a special album in his memory. Have asked the CWGC why this is so and am awaiting an answer. It all seemed so easy when I started out!!! 3. Hi Judy Yes, that's him. He was actually attached to an R.A.F. Squadron. I think the only other Aussie on board (from Adelaide) was the tail-gunner who was thrown clear when the plane exploded and spent the war in a POW camp. The rest of the crew were trapped inside the plane which crashed near Horsforst. They were buried, temporarily, in the Horsforst cemetery by the local inhabitants and are now buried together in the war cemetery in Hanover. At least we know what happened to him. When my husband died I went through all his papers and found all the letters that Malcolm had written to his mother, plus the official notifications and letters from the mothers of the other crew members who were either English or Scottish (They were written at the time they were reported missing - so sad, no-one knew anything until the SA chap was released from the POW camp and interrogated by the authorities.) Also a letter from the Tail-gunner's sister who told my mother-in-law all that they had been able to get from her brother. As often happens he wouldn't talk about it. The letters were all creased up in their original folds so I opened them up and put them in plastic sleeves. I got all the other details I could, from the internet, the aerodrome in Lincolnshire, the squadron, pictures of the planes, etc. etc. and put them all in an album for my children. (Malcolm wasn't married.) The Australian War Memorial committee put out a request last year for photos so I sent one that we had, taken in the UK when he was first commissioned in the June. He died three months later. Thanks for the info - don't know why I couldn't find it this time around!
