The West Briton (Friday, 06 Feb 1852) included a summary of the following Coroner's inquest held at St. Ives: > CORONERS' INQUESTS - The following inquests have been held before Mr. > HICHENS... > > On the 3rd of February, at St. Ives, on the body of JOHN UREN, aged 11 > years. The deceased was riding on the front part of a waggon on the > turn pike road between the Causeway Gate and Messrs. HARVEY and Co's > foundry, at Hayle, when he accidentally fell off and by reason of the > wheels on the near side passing over his body, received such internal > injury as to cause his death on the following day. Verdict, > "accidental death." John UREN, the child who died, was the son of John & Mary UREN of St. Ives. He was buried at St. Ives on 03 Feb 1852 following the inquiry held on that date. The specific identities of young John's father and mother remain uncertain, so let me share what I know of the family in the hope that somebody might be able to provide more information. (1) 1841 Census. John UREN, his wife, and son lived at the Warren, St. Ives - John UREN 30 Mariner born in county Mary UREN 25 born in county John UREN 6 mos born in county (2) 1851 Census. The elder John Uren died prior to the 1851 Census. His widow and children lived at Wills Lane, St. Ives in 1851, and the household included a visitor and a lodger - Mary UREN 38 Head Widow Working charwoman born St. Ives John UREN 10 Son born St. Ives Mary A. UREN 7 Dau born St. Ives Cath. COTHEY 10 Visitor born St. Ives Honor PAYNTER 69 Lodger Unm born St. Ives Visitor Catherine COTHEY was the daughter of William COTHEY and his wife Jane OLIVER, and the girl was baptized at St. Ives on 25 Oct 1840. Was she a relative? Lodger Honor PAYNTER is probably Honor Harry PAYNTER, daughter of Edward PAYNTER and his wife Mary HARRY, who was baptized at St. Ives in 1777. If so, her age was understated in 1851, when she would actually have been about 74. However, her age was closer to the mark when it was given as 76 at her 16 Mar 1852 burial at St. Ives. Honor had three illegitimate children born during the years 1807-20, and it is plausible that she had others. Was she the mother of widow Mary UREN? (3) 1861 Census. Mary and her daughter Mary Ann lived at Back Street, St. Ives in 1861. (4) 1871 Census. Mary was with her married daughter Mary (Mrs. Nicholas PHILLIPS) and family at Back Street, St. Ives in 1871. Any additional light shed on this family would be very welcome indeed. Bill Curnow Port Charlotte, FL, USA
