Dear Cornish Listers This couple were married in my great-great-great uncle's house in colonial Victoria, Australia. The bride was said to be the first British child to be born in New Zealand, admittedly off shore, on board ship, but close enough to the shore to be counted. My great-great-great uncle was Henry Tregaskis. The family had been living in Gwennap in the early 19th century, at Carn Marth and Carharrack. Prior to moving to Swansea and later sailing to Melbourne, Australia. My great-great-grandfather, Richard Tregaskis, arrived in Melbourne in 1855 and stayed in Australia but Henry returned to South Wales and had the Crown Biscuit Works in Cardiff. Henry and Richard were both engineers, Richard being involved in making steam engines and other engineering activities associated with the deep mining which followed the alluvial mining and shallow mines of the very early gold rush period in Australia. An earlier ancestor in the same line, with his son, was said to have erected the first Boul! ton and Watt steam engine in a Cornish mine, according to family records. Hello Bob - Thank you so very, very much for all this!! It's good to know what happened to Mary and Henry, and sad that their son only lived 11 years. This extract from the Nimroud passenger list just "tops it off", so to speak (and I doubt I would have found this on my own.) It's great to have suspected links confirmed as well. Now to keep going and discover more on the Rogers family, and their links. All your information has certainly given me directions to work from, which should be a lot of fun. Thanks so much, once again. All my best, Julia M. Hi Julia I believe Mary Rogers did marry Henry Eddy (baptised 3 Sep 1823 St Just, son of Peter Eddy and Mary Edmonds who married on 6 Feb 1816 at St Hilary). Henry Edmonds Eddy died in 1884 at Beaufort in Victoria, Australia, aged 63. Mary Eddy died in 1890 at Beaufort in Victoria aged 67 (parents Rogers and Margt Thomas). Hi All - Thanks to Find My Past's "free" weekend, my research into these families has advanced quite a bit, but now I have outstanding questions, of course. Perhaps someone has information, and can help? William Thomas of Redruth and Margaret Knight of Illogen married in Redruth 1788. They had John Thomas, 1790 - 1868, and Peggy Knight Thomas, 1789 - 1856. John married Eleanor EVA in 1815; I've already asked about their children- still can't identify which William Thomas b. 1816, Redruth, in the censuses was born to this pair. (there are 3 candidates thusfar). Their son John b. 1818, married Eliza James in 1843, and moved to Kent, then on to Yorkshire, where they lived to a good old age. Their sons Henry and James emigrated to the U.S in 1850; Henry then went to Australia the following year. (so there's no record of his emigration from the U.K. to Aus.) But I digress...... Peggy Knight Thomas married John Rogers in Camborne, 1816. They had the following 11 children (that I know of): Henry Knight Rogers, b. 1817............................................................. Charles, b. 1826.............................. Henry Rogers b. 1819................................................................... Marianne, b. 1827 Mary Rogers, b 1822 - married Henry Eddy................................... Matthew, b. 1828 Richard Rogers, b 1824........................................................................... John, b. 1829 Henry Eddy, son of Peter, a miner, gave his occupation as "gentleman" on the marriage register. I can't find him in the 1851 census, nor the pair of them in the 1861. Where might they be hiding? Did they emigrate, or move to a different county? He MAY be the Henry baptized 3 Sept 1823 , St. Just in Penwith, son of Peter and Mary (it seems likely),and might be the "assistant" in 1841 living in Camborne with John Barse & family. Would anyone know what happened to Harriet Jane? I haven't been able to locate her in FreeBMD - nor any death/burial records, nor in any census. Tis a puzzlement. Lastly, Ellen Eva Thomas, dau of John and Eleanor (couple no. 1 above) lived for years with the Tyack family, and in the last census in which she appears, 1901, Elizabeth Tyack, widow, is living with her COUSIN Ellen Eva Thomas. But I haven't discovered a link to the Tyack family in the John Thomas/Eleanor Eva lines. I'd hoped it might have come through the Rogers, but haven't found it there, either. The West Briton (Friday, 08 Oct 1858) reported the following birth at Towednack: "At Amalveor, Towednack, the wife of Mr. Matthew TREWHELLA, of a son." It is perhaps more likely that this child was the son of William TREWHELLA (1835-1896), who was in turn the son of Matthew TREWHELLA (1802-1876) and his wife Johanna TREWHELLA (1804-1881). William married Catherine Nicholls MARTINS (ca.1832-1907) at Towednack on 11 Jul 1858, and the son whose birth was reported would have been the first child born during their marriage. He was probably the William TREWHELLA whose birth was registered at Penzance during 3Q1858 and whose death was registered in the same district during 1Q1859. William & Catherine TREWHELLA subsequently had four daughters born during the 1860s - Johanna (1860), Mary Ann (1862), Johanna (1866), and Mary Ann (1869) - followed by a second son named William TREWHELLA (1871-1924). A daughter named Catherine Alice was born during 1874. The apparent confusion may have been due to the fact that grandfather Matthew TREWHELLA and his wife Johanna were very much alive in 1858 and well known in the parish. They lived in Towednack at Georgia in 1851 and at Embla in 1861, two communities less than a mile from Amalveor where their son William and family lived in 1861. So if it was Matthew who spread the word about the birth of his first grandchild, it is understandable that confusion might have slipped into the account that reached the newspaper. With today being the Thanksgiving holiday in the USA, it is an appropriate time to extend thanks to all who have contributed in one way or another to the ongoing conversations on both Cornish Lists during the past year. The West Briton (Friday, 01 Oct 1858) reported the following marriage at St. Ives: "At St. Ives, Mr. Ralph MITCHELL, of Trevorrow, to Miss Elizabeth JAMES." The groom was actually Ralph Michell TREVORROW, of St. Ives. Born in 1838 at St. Ives, he was the son of William TREVORROW and his wife Elizabeth MICHELL. The bride was Elizabeth Catherine JAMES, also born 1838 at St. Ives, daughter of Peter JAMES and his wife Elizabeth TROUNCE. Bill Curnow Port Charlotte, FL, USA
When two newspapers make the same mistake, it's a good bet that the problem was with the newspaper's informant and not with the type setters or proof readers. The West Briton (Friday, 01 Oct 1858) reported the following marriage: "At St. Mary’s, Scilly, on Tuesday last, Mr. George BOULDEN, to Miss Mary Jane LEWIS, both of St. Agnes." The same event was reported by The Royal Cornwall Gazette (Friday, 01 Oct 1858): "At St. Mary's, Scilly, on Tuesday last, Mr. George BOULDEN, of St. Agnes, to Mary Jane, eldest daughter of Mr. Edwin LEWIS, of the same place." On the other hand, the index of civil marriage registrations indicates that the marriage of George BOULDEN and Mary Jane DAVIS was recorded at Scilly during 3Q1858. The bride was actually Mary Jane DAVIS (born circa 1840, St. Agnes, Scilly), daughter of Edwin Lewis DAVIS and his wife Jane LEGG. The confusion was very likely caused by her father's middle name. Perhaps he was known locally as "Edwin Lewis" to distinguish him from another Edwin living in the same area. The groom was lighthouse keeper George Henry BOULDEN (1831-1868), son of Samuel BOULDEN and his wife Loveday ODGERS. George was born at the Lizard and baptized at Landewednack on Boxing Day of 1831. He and Mary Jane had at least four children born in the Scilly Isles. Bill Curnow Port Charlotte, FL, USA
Hi all - A while ago, someone was asking about Estate Duty registers, and asked where they could be found. I didn't see a reply, so thought it might be interesting to some that FamilySearch has the following "webinars" on Estate Duty - 1. What is it and Why use it? (10 minutes) 2. Content and Organization (15 minutes) 3. Locate and Obtain the Record (20 minutes) they're at http//familysearch.org/learningcenter/results.html?fq=place%3A"England" They have a total of 23 webinars there - some very basic, some a bit more involved, but all of them clear and briskly presented. Cheers, and Happy Thanksgiving to the U.S. Julia M.
