    3. Judy: I thought that your comment was most appropriate and did indeed state the obvious: Message boards are successful only when there is an recognition of the value of a two-way street. If our attitude is such that we participate only when there is a personal benefit to us, there will be very little accomplished. Of course, there will always be those who are looking for an opportunity to be offended and who respond inappropriately to those who are trying to be helpful. We all see that every day in whatever realm we work. However, I hope that you realize that there are those of us who did indeed appreciate your having pointed out that giving, as well as getting, is part of the grease that keeps the wheels turning. The sad part is that some will never experience the unexpected rewards that so often come back to us on these forums when we have offered help to others. You have my support as well as my extension of comfort for having been unfairly attacked. 3. Greetings List - I've been researching ships that left Cornwall ports heading for New York, USA harbor between 1820 and 1850. Many have been transcribed and are on my Boneplace website [scroll down to the 3rd link], others are still waiting in the wing [those marked * have been transcribed]. Knowing half a thimblefull about boats thought the following might be of interest. Were ships retrofitted for a different class of ship? All listed are on Ancestry.com except for the first listing (or perhaps I missed it): Royal Adelaide - Bark - arrived at New York (USA) Harbor 14 June 1839, Thos Jamison Captain *Royal Adelaide - Bark - arrived at New York (USA) Harbor 21 April 1840, Joseph Vivian Captain *Royal Adelaide - Bark - arrived at New York (USA) Harbor 25 May 1841, J. Lentz Captain *Royal Adelaide - Ship - arrived at New York (USA) Harbor 11 May 1836, Joseph Vivian Jr, Captain Royal Adelaide - Ship - arrived at New York (USA) Harbor 8 May 1837, Joseph Vivian Captain This list of ships was obtained from "Alphabetical Listing of Passenger Ships Arriving in New York Harbor, 1820-1850" along with clues of ships names appearing in the "West Briton" newspaper. 1. Re: [CORNISH-GEN] Thomas ~ Phillips marriage from 1849
    2. Hi Meli, I can't be much help to you other than to suggest that now that you have the marriage info, you order the certificate for the marriage of John & Edith. That should get you his father's name and occupation, and then you can go hunting for him in the 1841 census and work on figuring out John's connection to Edith. If they were first cousins, it should be do-able. The first explanation that springs to mind is that John's mother was a sister of Elizabeth WITHIEL. The GRO reference is Edith PHILLIPS & John THOMAS, December quarter of 1849, registration district of Wirral, Vol.19, page 330. Wirral is in Cheshire. Also, the marriage took place at Bebington, Chester (in the county of Cheshire), not in Cornwall. If you read the marriage notice again, you'll see that it was Edith's late father, William, that was "of Nance, in Illogan" Cornwall. You also have (from a previous post to the list) a letter written by Robert Withiel PHILLIPS that speaks of the PHILLIPS family living at "Nance Farm" in Illogan. You might also find it helpful to contact the WITHEL One Name Study at http://withell.org/perranzabuloe.php and/or request a lookup in Perranzabuloe parish marriage records at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~blanchec/Perran2.htm Joanne Toronto, Canada ----- Original Message ----- From: "Meli" <melibob4@texasbb.com> To: <cornish-gen@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 03, 2010 7:37 PM Subject: [CORNISH-GEN] Thomas ~ Phillips marriage from 1849 > This notice of the following marriage excited me, as I hadn't found the > date > before. > > WEST BRITON AND CORNWALL ADVERTISER transcribed by Julia Mosman > 21 December, 1849 MARRIAGES > > > At Bebington, Chester, on the 13th instant, Mr. JOHN THOMAS, of > Liverpool, > to EDITH, youngest daughter of the late Mr. WILLIAM PHILLIPS, of Nance, in > the parish of Illogan. > > > I believe this to be EDITH WITHIEL PHILLIPS, daughter of WILLIAM > PHILLIPS > and his wife ELIZABETH WITHIEL who married 16 Feb 1809 in Perranzabuloe. > My great great grandfather was Edith's older brother HUGH PHILLIPS who had > immigrated to Wisconsin in 1846 with his wife ELIZABETH DONNITHORNE. > EDITH W. 3. This notice of the following marriage excited me, as I hadn't found the date before. WEST BRITON AND CORNWALL ADVERTISER transcribed by Julia Mosman 21 December, 1849 MARRIAGES At Bebington, Chester, on the 13th instant, Mr. JOHN THOMAS, of Liverpool, to EDITH, youngest daughter of the late Mr. WILLIAM PHILLIPS, of Nance, in the parish of Illogan. I believe this to be EDITH WITHIEL PHILLIPS, daughter of WILLIAM PHILLIPS and his wife ELIZABETH WITHIEL who married 16 Feb 1809 in Perranzabuloe. My great great grandfather was Edith's older brother HUGH PHILLIPS who had immigrated to Wisconsin in 1846 with his wife ELIZABETH DONNITHORNE. EDITH W. PHILLIPS is said to have married her cousin, JOHN THOMAS, whose middle name was also WITHIEL. I have John and Elizabeth's descendants, but am eager to learn more about John and how he might be related via the WITHIEL line. I have his birth as 4th quarter 1823 in Redruth so don't know how or when he went to Liverpool. Also am interested in learning more about ELIZABETH WITHIEL PHILLIPS. I have her parents as ROBERT WITHIEL, born abt 1747 in Cornwall and died 25 Sep 1820 in Perranzabuloe, and wife ANN JOHNS born about Abt. 1744 in Cornwall and died 25 Jun 1822 in Perranzabuloe. Their children might have been , in addition to my Elizabeth, GRACE, PHILLIPA, and ANN. Anyone out there have any ties or documentation to these families? I am happy to share what I have on the William and Elizabeth (Withiel) Phillips families. And who can tell me more about Bebington, Chester in Illogan? Blessings...Melibob in Texas

    2. Hello Mark, My Praed/Prade/Praid One Name Study is mainly in Cornwall, so I don't think this is OT. I have traced 2 families back to Lelant (William Praed) and St Erth (Robert Praed) in the late 16th early 17th centuries - I would LOVE to prove these two contemporaries are brothers, but as yet have had no success. You only have to do your best to collect records worldwide. See http://www.one-name.org/onsregist.html which says: ...it is hoped that, over the course of their membership of the Guild, their registered One-Name Study will be extended and developed to cover as wide a field of data as is practicable, as outlined in registration objectives. There is a very active and helpful members only list available to post messages, but the archives are freely available on http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/GOONS I have been a member of GOONS since 1999, am in Category C and still collecting data! 3. Hi Mary The mailing lists that you suggested i subscribe to, is a no go, i mean they're pointless to join, as there's no present entries, one list has nothing, and the last entries on the message boards were made back in 2003, and in 2006. thanks for trying though.
