    3. Dear Cornish-Gen friends: This was posted in the latest Cornish-Gen Digest : WEST BRITON & CORNWALL ADVERTISER 24 Jan 1851 transcribed by Julia Mosman Deaths At Redruth, ........... and the widow of Mr. WILLIAM PHILLIPS, aged 62 years. [NB: No date mentioned.] I am trying to figure out if this possibly could be my ELIZABETH WITHIEL PHILLIPS. I have her in the census as follows: (What was the date of the Census?) All the people enumerated are her children. 1851 England Census Redruth, Cornwall 122 Angove Terrace Name: Elizabeth Phillips, Widow Estimated Birth Year: abt 1785 Relation: Head Elizabeth Phillips 66 b. Perranzabuloe, Cornwall Mary Ann Phillips 38 b. Illogan, Cornwall Samuel Phillips 32 b. Illogan [NB: This is James W....transcribed wrong] Pattern maker and employs 4 men and boys Nanny Phillips 31 b. Illogan , Cornwall I have her in my file as born possibly between 1790 and 1791. This newspaper record certainly could fit and she have been a little older than I thought , but how could she have died in Jan 1851 and been in the 1851 census? Tis a puzzlement! And, does anyone have any information on her children? Thanks for ideas...Meli in Texas

    2. The name grabbed me.....and ref to Poulton-le-Fylde , near where I was born . So.....as gardening looks less attractive today , I focussed on "Keets RISK" . Keats Robinson RISK was born in Saltash, Cornwall in 1816/5 . In SQ 1840 he married Constance Elizabeth POOLE , registered in Bangor . She was born in 1816/5 in Llangefni , Anglesey . 1841 finds them together in Greenwich , where he was working at The Royal Hospital to Seamen . In 1851 they are at 37 Market Place , Poulton-le-Fylde , Lancs . K R R is now a Surgeon and Physician . They now have two daughters : Constance Carolina Field RISK b '47 and Lucy Margaret Allford RISK b '51. In 1861 they are in Blackpool . K R R dies there in 1873 . In 1881 , the widowed Constance E , and Lucy M A are livingin Anglesey withC's also-widowed mother, M B POOLE who is 94 !! I hope this info will be of help to someone..... Best wishes Pat Oliver

    3. I have replied to a request in the West Briton and wondered if anybody is researching any of the following families. I am not sure how accurate the information is regarding parishes but something might ring bells so will include them. Whilst it is not impossible they do seem to be a bit scattered. William EDWARDS of Botus Fleming- Married Jane LYNE of Quethiock in 1855 (in Quethiock). 12 children from this marriage They then moved to Derbyshire after their 8th child was born. Parents of William were John EDWARDS born Sithney married Anne WEST? of Sithney. 5 children. Father of John EDWARDS was probably John EDWARDS of Penzance who married Ann LEGGO of Penzance. The Lyne family I will put on a separate mail. 3. Hi Pamela Actually William H Nicholls was missing on the 1841 census, in Kenwyn on the 1851 census and then the 1861 and 1871 census show a William H Nicholls of MIDDX LONDON which is why I asked if he was a relation. You obviously think this was the same person, possibly but strange that he started giving his birth place as London. I see you are suggesting that Elizabeth Warring was William's sister. I only show him as having a brother, John 1802 Wells and Elizabeth from the 1871 census came from Newlyn East. Of course the other confusing thing is that there were 2 William Nicholls deaths registered in Truro between 1871 and 1881, one showing he was born c1800 and the other c1801. This also point to the William H of london being a different one to William H of Somerset. The censuses are all available on freencensus http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl By the way the town George May was born in is actually Cullompton Devon, it's spelt incorrectly in the census. 3. Hi Peter... You have just provided a gem ....thank you so much! William Hodges Nicholls was of course a confectioner - we have from the 1841 census in Kenwyn where he was living with his wife and children; 1851 he is missing; 1861 he is boarding in the area - while his wife Jane nee Rundle was living with their daughter Jane, wife of George May - no reference to her thereafter, which suggests she died...and George and Jane May emigrated to Australia in 1869 on the Cadduceus [along with Thomas Odgers Nicholls and his wife Mary Courtis Searle]; 1871 William is boarding [possibly with his sister and her husband] in Truro, and died soon after. I would be so grateful for a reference to the 1851 census / or even a copy if you have it.... I did find WHN listed in the Birmingham Trade Directory as a confectioner 1855 Section B Page 430...seems that Mr N and Mrs N may have been separated.... 3. I think this illustrates a problem we all have. We grasp these little snippets of information recorded at ten year intervals - and trade directories entries if we're lucky. Even though we know that the census only records the situation on the night and that directories can be well out of date, it's very hard not to form a picture that we only revise when we get new 'facts'. It's possible that Jane and William had separated - and equally likely that they were both away from the marital home on census night 1861. It could be there was only a bed for Jane, or that the boarding house only had a small room - or maybe William didn't get on with his son in law and made an excuse about business keeping him away. Perhaps William's business was doing so well that he left a manager in charge... I'm sure more facts will emerge about this family. The mid 19thC was a period of economic growth and tradesmen provided for their retirement and their families through saving. In the absence of the financial products we have today that very often meant buying houses. It may be that a will or the voters' roll will reveal property interests that needed to be taken care of. 3. Hi Pamela I'll pull up the Feock members for you and mail them. Have a Nicholls question for you too. Do you know who was the William H Nicholls confectionor London who appears on the Truro 1861 and 1871 census? Seem a remarkable coincidence with the William Hodges Nicholls confectioner Somerset who was on the earlier census. 3. Dear Mary I was pleased to see the address you gave re Natal Wesleyan Methodist members. I was wondering if there are any records of later members, please? My maternal grandmother's sister, Olivia POLGLASE BORN 1864 married Edwin MATTHEWS 1890 and had three children, some of whom I believe ended up in South Africa. I was wondering if there were any later records I could check, please? Edwin and Olivia had three children: Ellen Polglase MATTHEWS 1891 married Herbert B. UNWIN 1919 died 1964 Edward Polglase MATTHEWS 1893 married Dorothy ROPER died 1972 Olive Beadon MATTHEWS 1894 married Arthur John VIGURS 1921 died 1978 John VIGURS AND Olive Beadon Matthews had a daughter Joy Ninette VIGURS, born 1922, who married M.N.A.MAROUDAS who was believed to be a missionary. I have pictures of her in South Africa where she died in 1995. Her body was then repatriated to Cornwall and she was buried in Veryan in 1995. My problem is, how can I go about finding ou what happened to this family??? The sparse information was passed on by a 90-year-old cousin who gave up family history some years ago because of her poor health, and has left me to carry on!! Her husband sadly died last year and her daughter is seriously ill herself and in a wheelchair so I feel they have more than enough on their hands to be able to cope with family history! Any assistance from anywhere would be gratefully accepted!!!!!
