The West Briton (Friday, 03 Oct 1856) reported the following marriage: "At the Registrar's Office, Penzance, on the 19th ult., Mr. James WARD to Mrs. Caroline FARMER, both of Digey, St. Ives..." The bride was actually Mrs. Caroline TANNER, widow of James TANNER (died 1850). She was Caroline WILLIAMS (born 1822 Phillack, d/o John WILLIAMS & Sally RUSSELL) when she married shoemaker James TANNER (b.ca. 1821, s/o James TANNER & Ann WILLIAMS) at St. Ives on 18 Feb 1845. Caroline was left with three children when her first husband died in 1850. Her marriage to James WARD, a Royal Army Gunner (1861) born at Leicester, was registered at Penzance during 3Q1856. She and James had three sons. The family lived at the Warren, St. Ives at the 1861 Census. Bill Curnow Port Charlotte, FL, USA
This was Mary Ann, daughter of Richard and Mary. She was born circa 1824, and in the 1851 was listed as a farmer's daughter. David There is also a book entitled "Training in Truro 1813-1938" by M Graham Brown which was published in 1938. As well as describing the history of teacher training in Truro, it also has a list of former staff and old students. Clearly, the book is long out of print but there are second-hand copies around. I see you are a CFHS member so it may be worth having a word with someone in the Truro office as I recall that Mr Parkes has done quite a bit of research into the Diocesan Training College. Hi Nivard There is an OPC for Penzance whom you could try. The Penzance Borough Cemetery is a fair distance from Laregan but that is the main burial ground for Penzance - in St.Clare Street, between the cricket ground and Heamoor. Hello, Is there anyone on this list you would be able to send me a copy of the death notice for Angelina Darlington PIDWELL who died at Mt Charles on 13 August 1880. I am particularly interested in the one that mentions her father. Regards, Christine

Bill, Strange that the week before (22nd Aug 1856) the WB got it right - "At Trethewell, in the parish of St. Just in Roseland, on Tuesday last, Mr. JOHN BORLASE, builder, aged 28 years." This death was reported right in the midst of deaths occuring in Penwith, where St. Just in Penwith is located. However, if this man had died at St. Just in Penwith, there would likely be a civil death registration at Penzance and/or a burial record in that parish. There is neither. On the other hand, the death of a John BORLASE was registered at Truro during 3Q1856. Hi Pat Thanks for your input Although it was during the war years it was not as a result of the war but appendicitis followed by peritonitis, I doubt there would be any problem these days There is a Catholic element in the family but later so am unsure if he was or not, the living relative thinks they were baptised in Newlyn so I suspect not I can see now there are several Lariggan and Laregan addresses all close to each other between Penzance and Newlyn which fits in with the description I have been given The address is not so important as his last resting place According to Genuki, Newlyn does not have its own burial site and burials would be at Sheffield Road Cemetery, Paul Apparently the MIs have been recorded, would anyone have access to them please? It would appear that The West Briton (Friday, 29 Aug 1856) made a geographical error in reporting the death of John BORLASE: > DEATHS. > > At St. Just in Penwith, Mr. JOHN BORLASE, aged 28 years. This death was reported right in the midst of deaths occuring in Penwith, where St. Just in Penwith is located. However, if this man had died at St. Just in Penwith, there would likely be a civil death registration at Penzance and/or a burial record in that parish. There is neither. On the other hand, the death of a John BORLASE was registered at Truro during 3Q1856. Moreover, there is record of the burial of John BORLASE, 27, of Trethewel, at St. Just in ROSELAND on 21 Aug 1856. One plausible theory is that an informant advised the newspaper of the death of John BORLASE at "St. Just" (full stop), with the newspaper subsequently making the wrong guess as to which St. Just. Hi Nivard There was only one Laregan (Lariggan) in Penzance when I lived there (born and bred) it was one of the old estates which had been split up for good quality housing, in the early 1930's. The main part lies between Penzance and Newlyn thus joining the two together. "Meredyth" would be the name given to the house (very popular in those days!) Nearest Church of E would be St.Peters Newlyn but there are also the Methodist churches and other C of E in Penzance, plus Catholic, Baptist, and the Borough cemetery in St.Clare Street, Penzance - about a mile north of West Cornwall Hospital. 1942 was during the war, the year of the 'great raid on Penzance' according to Lord Haw! Haw! Can't remember if Laregan was involved - I left in 1954. Hi Bill, Thank you for that. I found the 1851 under Lawrey on FreeCEN, but not 1961. Looking at the children, the FreeBMD birth registrations are nearly all under the name of LORY. I think I've found Johanna's death reg, under Johanna LORY, age 61, Mar Qtr. 1876, Redruth RD. And perhaps also a death for Henry LORY, age 67, June Qtr. 1886, Redruth RD. So he should be in the 1881 C. John LORY married Ann Eddy MARTIN March Qtr. 1862 Penzance RD. Grace LORY married Thomas ENDEAN Dec Qtr 1878, Redruth RD. Priscilla LORY didn't marry and died in 1914, Redruth. James LORY married Elizabeth Endean Dec Q. 1876 Redruth RD, and they are in the 1881 C. in Redruth. In 1901 they are in Victoria, British Columbia, are naturalized and in the March 1901 Canadian Census with their children. Elizabeth Jane LORY married a John KNIGHT or William Reynolds TERRILL in 1877, in Redruth RD. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Bill Curnow Sent: Thursday, 18 October 2012 10:26 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [CORNISH-GEN] Johanna Pascoe and Henry Lawry Rowena, They remained at Ludgvan - 1851 Henry Lawrey and family were at Carvossow (Carvossoe). 1861 Henery Lawrey and family can be found at Folio 44, Page 26. 1871 Henry Lawry and family were at 12 Lower Quarter. Dear List, I am having trouble finding what happened to Johanna and Henry LAWRY. I have not been able to find in the 1851 and 1861 Census, or their death or burial records. Would anyone be able to help me with this? They were, Johanna PASCOE bapt. 20 Aug 1815 Ludgvan to parents Richard PASCOE and Grace GILLIS, and Henry LAWRY, bapt. 23 Feb 1817 Zennor to parents Henry LAWRY and Elizabeth PERRY. Johanna PASCOE and Henry LAWRY married on 18 Nov 1838 in Zennor. He was noted as a mason in the 1841 C. and they were in Crowlas, Ludgvan. Their children (as far as I can work out) were: Henry 1839, John 1841, Grace c.1845, Priscilla c.1848, William c.1852, James c.1854, and Elizabeth J. c.1857. This is the only Census I have found them in. 1871 Census - residence: 12 Lower Quarter, Ludgvan. Henry is 54, stone mason, born Zennor, Johana 54, Domestic work, born Ludgvan, Grace 26, tin stamps works, born Ludgvan, Priscilla 23, tin stamps works, born Ludgvan, William 19, tin stamps works, James 18 tin stamps works born Ludgvan, Elizabeth J. 14, domestic assistant, born Ludgvan. I would be interested to hear from anyone who has researched this family or knows what happened to them. Kind regards, Rowena
