    1. [CORNISH-ANCESTORS] End of Rootsweb mailing lists - creation of replacement Cornwall genealogy groups.io group
    2. Bret Busby
    3. Hello, everyone. Please read all of the way to the end of this message. It may seem monolithic, but, I aim for complete clearness, and, to avoid any misunderstandings. I am the List Administrator of the Rootsweb Cornish genealogy lists; cornish-ancestors cornish-family cornwall-australia eng-con-bodminmoor The following message was posted to the Rootsweb Listowners Announcements list; On Tue, 7 Jan 2020, RootsWeb Administration wrote: > > Date: Wed, 8 Jan 2020 01:35:06 > From: RootsWeb Administration <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > Subject: [ROOT-LO-ANNOUN] RootsWeb Mailing Lists > > Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be > discontinued. As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, > Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the > genealogy community. Sincerely, > The RootsWeb team > > Two options have arisen for subscribers to Rootsweb genealogy mailing lists relating to the County of Cornwall, which is also, the Duchy of Cornwall. From the Cornish-Gen mailing list, Wesley Johnston has created a group that is a Google group facility. He has published a web page with instructions regarding how to join that group, at http://www.wwjohnston.net/famhist/cornish-gen-info.htm As has been done by other Rootsweb genealogy mailing lists List Administrators, I have created a group on groups.io, at https://groups.io/g/Cornwall-place-genealogy which provides a mailing list facility (which is apparently, superior to the Rootsweb genealogical mailing list facility). This has been done, by agreement with Yvonne Bowers, the List Administrator of the Rootsweb genealogy mailing lists; ca-cornish cornish cornish-gen to merge her (first two listed above) lists with my abovenamed lists, in the migration to the new group at groups.io In this, I welcome anyone from the cornish-gen list, who decides to join my groups.io group, and, from any other Rootsweb Cornwall place oriented list, or, otherwise, has an interest in genealogy relating to the County/Duchy of Cornwall, as I believe that Wesley Johnston would welcome anyone from any of the other lists relating to the Cornwall County/Duchy, who decide to join his google group. I believe that Yvonne's Rootsweb mailing lists are far bigger, and, more active, than my Rootsweb lists, so, the merging should be beneficial for all who migrate to either or both of the two groups on offer. Some people prefer google groups; some people prefer groups.io groups. I do not compete with Wesley Johnston, in what he has done with his google group. What I suggest, is that, if you prefer google groups, join Wesley Johnston's google group; if you prefer groups.io groups, join my groups.io group. Or, you can join both, and, if you find that, after a month or so (or, whenever - the choice would be up to you), you prefer one group to the other, you can quit the group that you prefer less, and stay with the one that you prefer; or, if you are inclined, you can stay with both. The web page at https://groups.io/g/Cornwall-place-genealogy includes the group description, and other information about my groups.io group. The reasons that I chose that group name, are these: 1. the word "genealogy" is present, to avoid any confusion with other (possible) groups that may be concerned with current events in Cornwall, or, discussions about politics or other things that do not involve genealogy, such as the biosphere (?), etc. 2. the word "place" is present, to separate this group from discussions of genealogy relating to the Cornish and Cornwall family names, and, any related family names, such as Kurnow. You can create an account, from that web page, and, search for other genealogical, or other, groups that may interest you, or, you can subscribe to the mailing list, directly, by sending an email message to [email protected] As that email address contains the plus symbol, you need to ensure that you use exactly that email address, if you use this method. Please subscribe, and, post an introductory message, stating your lineage, and, any queries that you have. Remember; this (Rootsweb) mailing list, and, all Rootsweb mailing lists, are scheduled to cease operation, as of 02 March 2020. -- Bret Busby Group owner - https://groups.io/g/Cornwall-place-genealogy Armadale West Australia .............. 3. Thanks for your help Pat. I have tried lots of variables as I saw his son recorded as “Jelbert” I can trace right down the line to my own lovely grandad, but not back from Edmond. Anyway, I appreciate your help and very prompt reply! Happy hunting! I cannot find any information about him prior to his wedding in 1714. He married Ann Berryman in Gulval and on the record is called “Edmond Gilbert of Gulval”. I have records for the birth and death of his children and his own death. He doesn’t appear on any other ancestry tree on any source I have looked at. Even the very helpful Madron and Gulval holder of the parish records cannot find any previous records. This is frustrating, and unusual, as all other Cornish ancestor links have led to copious records. I would be extremely grateful for any hints. > S > > Sent from my iPad > > _______________________________________________ > > _______________________________________________ > Email preferences: http://bit.ly/rootswebpref > Unsubscribe https://lists.rootsweb.com/postorius/lists/[email protected] > Privacy Statement: https://ancstry.me/2JWBOdY Terms and Conditions: https://ancstry.me/2HDBym9 > Rootsweb Blog: http://rootsweb.blog > RootsWeb is funded and supported by Ancestry.com and our loyal RootsWeb community > _______________________________________________ > _______________________________________________ > Email preferences: http://bit.ly/rootswebpref > Unsubscribe https://lists.rootsweb.com/postorius/lists/[email protected] > Privacy Statement: https://ancstry.me/2JWBOdY Terms and Conditions: https://ancstry.me/2HDBym9 > Rootsweb Blog: http://rootsweb.blog > RootsWeb is funded and supported by Ancestry.com and our loyal RootsWeb community

    1. [CORNISH-ANCESTORS] New book on the Cornish in Latin America
    2. Martin Critchley
    3. The long-awaited "The Cornish in Latin America: 'Cousin Jack' and the New World" - by Cornish mining migration specialist Dr Sharron P. Schwartz - sheds light on a little understood aspect of the mining migration story of the nineteenth century. Dr Schwartz has produced an exhaustively researched but thoroughly readable work which recounts in detail how the Latin American mining fields of Peru, Mexico, Chile, Cuba, Brazil and elsewhere became established, or were reshaped through the application of Cornish skills and technology, allied with British capital. Not content with documenting the impacts of the Cornish in communities throughout Latin America, Dr Schwartz also addresses the effects that this migration had on the many towns and villages across Cornwall from whence the migrants came. "In this new and comprehensive study Sharron Schwartz stands considerably apart from her predecessors. A Redruth girl herself, her prime concern is with her fellow-Cornish overseas in Latin America; their adventures and achievements, their families, descendants and associates, their legacies matching those of the Scots in New Zealand or the Welsh in Patagonia." - The late Professor Charles Thomas This publication addresses a glaring gap in the literature covering Cornish-related migration studies. But more importantly, it demonstrates the significant Cornish contribution to the British development of nineteenth century Latin American mining resources, thus ensuring that the labour migrants from this small and remarkable region of Britain are finally recognised for their involvement in this process. 640 pages, softback, £28 plus postage and packing. All purchases are online from http://www.cornubianpress.com/Publications/default.html For a preview of the book see http://www.cornubianpress.com/preview/default.html Sharron will be signing copies of her book on the Cornish Studies Library, Redruth on Saturday 26th November 2016 between 10:15 and 12:30 where the book can be brought post free. Martin Critchley
