Redruth 1884) and his wife Elizabeth WITHIELL (b. Perranzabuloe abt 1784, d. Redruth 1856) married 16 Feb 1809 in Perranzabuloe. He may have been the son of a William (I call The First) Phillips and wife Elizabeth VERRAN who had six children baptized in Illogan: our William, John, Jane, Henry, Thomas and Jennifer. [NB: Research has not been done on this family yet, and if you have info on them, please contact me!] The christening dates, between 1810 and 1825, for William (I call II ) and wife Elizabeth Withiell Phillips’ eight children are from the Illogan records: Elizabeth Betsy Withiell Phillips m. William HOSKING; William Withiel Phillips m. Anne Parkyn FRANCIS; Mary Ann Phillips (no further data after 1851); Hugh Phillips (my ancestor) m. 1st Elizabeth DONNITHORNE, 2nd Pee Priscilla Ellis LADNER; James Withiel Phillips m. Heather Ann HODGE; Nanny Phillips who may have married a James HARVEY or a Thomas HICKS; Robert Withiel Phillips m. Mary Pearson PLOMER; and Edith Withiel Phillips m. John Withiel THOMAS [NB: said to be a cousin, but we cannot find the tie-in. If you can help, please email.] Sometime around 1815, William and Elizabeth moved to the Nance Farm near Portreath, Cornwall, not far from Illogan, where they were yeoman farmers according to later census records. Apparently by the time the children were grown the family moved to Redruth (1841 England Census ) for retirement, and there the parents died and were buried in the St. Uny churchyard. Thanks to help from cousins, many researchers, computer records and guidance, I think, from our ancestors’ spirits, living descendants from my Hugh Phillips and six of his seven siblings have been discovered around the world. I have a fabulous letter written by Robert Withiel Phillips in 1880 from England to Mineral Point, Iowa Co., Wisconsin USA giving condolences to the family there upon the death of Hugh. In it, Robert describes their life at Nance when they were children. I will make this letter available later. Today, that grand manor house still exists and is currently a Bread and Breakfast! We will visit that ancient place on Saturday, 20 April, next year, to commune with the young spirits of our ancestors who were reared there. In 1899, it was written that the Nance farmhouse/manor was thought to have been built prior to the Reformation in the 1500s. There are extant paintings of Apostles on the walls and the building may have been an ecclesiastical site before Henry VIII kicked the Catholics out of England.
