I always find the GBP notation annoying (especially as it is only called that in the standard international banking system, introduced around 20 years or so ago, and is therefore anachronistic. I have found that even e- mails from Mac users give funny results on my Mac after passing through servers on other platforms, but then computing is a horrifyingly inexact science!
