Hi Julie - Ancestry seems to be offering "free" access only to the "original 13 states" information. At least, that's what was offered to me. Unfortunately, Michigan and California weren't in the original group! (and those are the states I need to research.) Plus you can view the "Free" 1940 index - which is, of course, not completed. To view the 1940 census itself, you can sign up for a "free for 2 weeks" account. (Once again, that's what was offered me; taken directly to their "pay-up page".) However, FamilySearch just had a record setting day of transcription and arbitration - over 10 million records completed. They might need a short while to put it all online, but in just a few weeks it should prove very helpful.
