From: John Griffiths Sent: Monday, December 16, 2013 4:40 AM To: cornish-gen@rootsweb.com Subject: Assistance Please Hi listers, I’m attempting to start back on my family history but since having to let my subscription to Ancestry go 2 years ago due to financial reasons I’m finding it almost impossible to get access to records. I decided to see if I could expand on my Robert SHEER & Caroline ROWETT’S part of my family. I have all the children to their marriage but can find nothing to help me locate their children’s lines. 2 days ago I worked out that their 2nd child married in Sept qtr. 1869 Reg at Redruth 5c 365 (but I’m not sure the wedding took place at Redruth) I have the choice of 2 brides either Emily CARBIS or Mary Jane PASCOE. I’ve tried looking on the IGI but no hits even though I looked for a marriage in 1869 Cornwall I got only baptisms and a lot of Welsh census hits for various years and counties in England (I think I may need to subscribe to that now as well) as I have not located anything on any record I’ve looked for on the IGI since I started looking again about 10 days ago, I’ve tried looking on the OPC but no luck either, I think maybe 1869 might be to late for the OPC, I tried to look at the Redruth Parish Register but for some reason the marriages end at from memory 1830, so I tried to GOOGLE Thomas Henry SHEER & FAMILY, Mary Jane PASCOE & family and when I try GOOGLING Emily CARBIS & family I get ads for B&B’s, holiday cabins and hotels around Lake? Carbis... very frustrating. Is there anyone on the list that maybe researching the same lines that may be able to assist me with marriages of 5 of Robert & Caroline SHEER’s children; Thomas Henry bap: 8 Sept 1850 All at St. Andrew’s Tywardreath Robert bap: 25 Dec 1856 Albert bap: 12 Oct 1859 Bertha bap: 1 Mar 1863 Private baptism at Tywardreath still alive in 1891 Census Kate born: Mar qtr 1865 St. Austell 5c 132 Happy Days and many thanks, John in sunny Australia
Hi John, Like you, I'm struggling to find that 1869 wedding. In passing, you may find this 1871 census useful, it is the homestead of Robert SHEER and his wife Caroline, and it records an extra child or two - in fact, it doubles work, with the following (all ages as at 1871): William (19), Mary (18), Martha (16), Emma (10), Richard (4). Strangely, I had little luck in going back any further through the records generated by the batch numbers, so it would be interesting to know how much further back you've got, because SHEER is quite an unusual surname, especially with that spelling (more often SHEAR, but still quite unusual in Cornwall I feel). Hi John Robert married March qtr 1848 in St Austell Volume 9 Page 23 on Free BMD. I often look at this site as Ancestry has not copied every entry. Another good site to remember is FreeCen.
