    3. Obviously the ballroom that will hold hundreds must be at the top of the lighthouse so that we can dance around the lights - no extra light will be needed. There must be a Banqueting Hall preferably on the ground floor, big enough to feed the hungry hordes as they arrive with refreshments available around the clock and a massive storage room to hold all of the food and assorted liquid refreshments. Some may not make it out of the Banqueting Hall to see the grandeur of the lighthouse which can be floodlit in gold for the occasion. Rocks can expand to hold all of the assorted conveyances well above sea-level and, if necessary a yapping mad Jack Russell terrier. The crazy cat can be left to roam as cats are wont to do. I wish its name wasn't Luna that is too much like the name of the virtual/virtuous Lady of the Lighthouse. Please add onto or into the lighthouse any conveniences you think we will need need for the party. Dungeons not allowed. The 2 little parrots have retrieved their tops hats, ties and tails for the dance and assorted tops and bottoms of swim suits knitted by groups in the past. They think they are going paddling. Maybe we need a bathing/swimming pool come spa with palm trees... we need an orchestra or band ... who plays what or sings - dare I ask? Who will lead the choir? Decorations? An affectionate nod of my white Stetson hat to the dear JohnO of the past who would not let me sing the Halllelujah Chorus when he heard my voice. He only allowed me hum quietly. 3. Hi John I live in Australia and find the Cornish site extremely interesting especially the bit of history and description of some of the places. My family lines come through the Tonkin/James connection my ggxgrandfather was John Henry Tonkin. I was in touch with Arthur Basil Tonkin whose father was James Tonkin a Baker who plied his trade on Wherry Island. I was wondering Arthur wrote me wonderful letters and also gave descriptions of his beloved Cornwall including some family recipes. So would anyone be interested in copies of these letters? If so I could either scan or copy and post. Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas. Hazel E. Magann OAM, FBDHS. Lethbridge Park, NSW

    2. That's fine, Mistress Agnes is a dab hand at candle making. She says do you want extravagant beeswax candles or the dimmer, cheaper, smellier tallow candles? You can of course get extra light from these by burning the top and bottom of the wick at the same time but Mistress Agnes disapproves of those who are extravagant enough to burn the candle at both ends. On the other hand she may extract payment in kind, in which case I'd go for a fish oil lamp - I am sure the fishermen of Cornwall will oblige. Well Hazel, I about to start my Cornish Coal (& tin) Miner digging from Victoria to Cornwall -- shall I divert via New South Wales and pick you up ? I could do with a spare hand as Lizzie the mad Jack Russell is refusing to help out with the scrabbling, and Luna the crazy cat has disappeared (not that she was much for scrabbling, she was more inclined to give one encouraging nips from the rear). And I am in need of a chaperone as I fear I may have made at bit of an impression on Miss Agnes last year . . . . . And I think I shall need double the supply of candles for the tunnel -- as I will need some left overs for the Lighthouse at the other end. 2. Mistress Agnes is heading off for Godrevy Lighthouse. She is a bit concerned about all this cream tea lark. She is from Devon - they do cream teas differently there - it is all to do with whether the clotted cream goes on first (Devon) or the jam first (Cornwall). There is also some confusion between scones - frequently served with cream teas and splits, which are more like rolls http://allrecipes.co.uk/recipe/4489/cornish-splits.aspx. To be honest Mistress Agnes doesn't care much either way, as long as there is food, oh and nice young men at the party. She is currently to be seen thumbing a lift along the A39 (Atlantic Highway) (main road from North Devon into Cornwall). Mistress Agnes lives in the seventeenth century - no wheeled transport in the west country then, so the best she can hope for is someone coming past on a horse. She does usually travel by sea, as people frequently did in her time. Storms are forecast so she has decided against this this year. So if anyone sees her hitching her petticoat above her ankles in an unseemly manner in the hope of attracting attention perhaps you could rescue her. Hello all, My husband descends from the Cornish Webb and Stevens families. I am enjoying this discussion of where to hold a virtual Christmas Party. Wish we could actually visit you and attend the service at St Ive (or is it Ives?). My question is, what are Splits and Cream? We have had Saffron cake and would love to know what other foods are traditional Cornish to serve at Christmas. I may even have to bake some saffron cake to honor my husband's heritage this Christmas. Happy Holidays from Minnesota. Dear All, I'm sitting here in Cornwall on a wet and miserable Sunday morning and thinking about the venues so far suggested. Godrevy Lighthouse (suggested by Lorna May), Pigmoor (suggested by yours truly), and Port Wenn aka Port Isaac (suggested by Albert Jenkin). In real life, Anna is in another room here in our rambling old stone house, where she is practising her reading for the Cornish Service of Nine Lessons and Carols, at St Ive Chapel this evening. The entire service (carols and readings) is held in the ancient Cornish language, and it is followed by a proper Cornish tea in the old schoolroom, with Saffron Cake and Splits & Cream. It's a wonderful start to Christmas, and draws people to a packed chapel from all over Cornwall. In the same way, our mad Cornish List Virtual Party draws together people from all over the world, and I'd miss it like crazy if we didn't have it, even though I'm the one in the kitchen doing the washing-up and forgetting the punch-lines to the jokes!!!!!!!!! So Lorna May's idea of Godrevy Lighthouse is a wonderful suggestion to light up this world of ours. It's been a tough year for many, and the romance of a tiny island off the Cornish coast, with a beacon flashing a welcome sounds like an inspired choice! So a big Thank You to Lorna May - Virtual Lady of the Light - there are loads of grey seals, dolphins, and basking sharks who can start delivering your virtual invitations handed from your oilskin clad virtual figure as you balance on the rocks and try to avoid getting washed in by the next big wave! So for Christmas 2013, for those that would love to party, welcome to Cornwall and to Godrevy Lighthouse! I wouldn't mind a copy of the material, just in case he was a relative of your Tonkins. The son of Thomas Tonkin, EA was from St. Columb area. Scanning and e-mail would be best - to: sherleetooze at interlinks dot net. Thanks Hazel! 3. Hello Jan and Listers: In 2003, the Toronto Cornish Association hosted the Cornish AMerican Heritage Society's Gathering of Cornish Cousins at Bowmanville. We really wanted to serve splits and cream (with Strawberries, of course) but finding real splits was a concern. I stopped in a little bakery in a small town, Port Perry, and found a "bun" that seemed to suit the purposes. When the committee, made up of "real" Cornish folk, tasted the buns they declared them close enough to Cornish splits to do the job admirably. They were a cross between a bun and a tea biscuit, if memory serves. So look for something like that if you want to try splits and cream. 3. Hi Hazel, Welcome, and thankyou for your intriguing post! I'm struggling a bit, because I'm not aware of a Wherry Island, although Wherrytown seems to fit the location for the TONKIN families quite well (most of the references seem to be for the Newlyn or Penzance area, and Wherrytown was between the two. There was a unique mine, driven out in the sea at low tide, and this is the main claim to fame. Wherrytown was effectively destroyed by a storm in 1962, and the site is now a park and lake, and a supermarket! But among those letters must be some that would be of interest for Christmas! Please pick out the best of them, and somehow add it to what I hope will be the festivities on the List! As for the others, I'm sure that the Cornish Records Office or the Cornish Studies Library would be interested in these letters. This is the link for depositing records with the Cornish Studies Library: http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=25295 Very best, and thanks in anticipation! 3. Hi John, Like you, I'm struggling to find that 1869 wedding. In passing, you may find this 1871 census useful, it is the homestead of Robert SHEER and his wife Caroline, and it records an extra child or two - in fact, it doubles work, with the following (all ages as at 1871): William (19), Mary (18), Martha (16), Emma (10), Richard (4). Strangely, I had little luck in going back any further through the records generated by the batch numbers, so it would be interesting to know how much further back you've got, because SHEER is quite an unusual surname, especially with that spelling (more often SHEAR, but still quite unusual in Cornwall I feel). 3. Ah, yes, I would love a ride in the Moose/Meese Sleigh! I just retired this week and have lots of time now! (I will have to learn to ignore Open House signs now!) I am going to catch up on Doc Martin episodes, work some more on my family history (I am 75% Cornish, even after 5 generations!) and I hope to go to real Cornwall again next fall, if all goes well. I want to climb Carn Brea! But I digress......I want to have a real Cream Tea when we get to the Party this year. My arteries are too clear and they need some real clotted cream. I will wait for you by the old Cabrillo Lighthouse on Point Loma. Blink three times as you are getting closer so I will recognize your Moose/Meese sleigh. I don't want to confuse you with a TV/traffic or Navy copter trying to land at North Island Naval Air Station. Be careful nobody reports you as a UFO or you will be on the 6 pm news! See you soon!
