Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this CORMIER Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- Every SUNDAY evenings starting at 7:00 PM (Eastern time), all Acadian-Cajun cousins are invited to meet in the ACADIAN-CAJUN Chat Room located at: http://www.acadian.org/chat.html This is your opportunity to "TALK" with all your Acadian-Cajun friends and cousins. Won't you join in? PS: If this is your first time "at the party", you may want to arrive a bit early, in order to have the opportunity to check things and figure out how to enter the 'Chat room". PSS: As we all know, the Mailing List is primarily intended for genealogy-related discussions however, there are times when subscribers might want to discuss a subject matter not quite suitable for the Mailing List. Obviously the ACADIAN-CAJUN Chat Room is an excellent medium for this purpose. While the regularly scheduled Sunday meeting (7:00 PM Eastern) is a _weekly_ happening for the subscribers of this CORMIER Mailing List, keep in mind that anyone...at anytime...can meet to "talk" in the Chat Room. Just (privately) send each other an e-mail message and decide what date/time you want to meet. Then, at the pre-arranged time, click on the URL address: http://www.acadian.org/chat.html ...and follow instructions there, for your get-together. PSSS: You must have your Internet Browser (Netscape, Explorer etc.) java-enabled. If you are not certain how to do this, contact your Internet Service Provided for assistance. YVON L. Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this CORMIER Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- You may not be aware that all e-mail messages posted on this CORMIER Mailing List since its inception, are being archived indefinitely by Rootsweb. Not only does this eliminate the trouble of you "saving" messages on your own computer, but it provides ready-access for any message you've previously seen here (or may have missed when you were away or temporarily unsubscribed from the List). There are two archives of the mailing list messages... 1. The first and most complete is the _interactive_ search at: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl This is an interface to the archives for most of the RootsWeb mailing lists, current through the past day or so. In the form provided, enter the name CORMIER. You will then be provided a form in which to enter the surname (or whatever) that you are looking for. 2. The second archive is the _threaded_ archives and is located at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ Here again, you merely enter the name of the Mailing List [CORMIER] in the form provided and then click on "Submit Query". --------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT NOTES: 1. As you will see when you visit the above noted URL addresses, all archived messages can be viewed in "chronological" order, or in "thread" (by subject) order. The importance of using a brief but descriptive "subject" when you're posting messages (or replies) on the Mailing List, should be quite obvious. It is also important to also use the _original_ "subject" when replying to a message. This new service is provided for YOUR/OUR benefit... so let's all work together to make it successful. So, when posting a message to the Mailing List, please don't use a vague "subject heading" like...'Need Help'. Instead use a brief but descriptive "Subject" which best describes the content of your message. 2. If you are subscribed in the "Digest Mode", be certain to remove the Digest Reference Number in the "Subject" column, when replying to messages on the Mailing List, and replace same with a brief/descriptive "Subject" based on the content of your reply. 3. Another very important consideration, is that reply messages to initial inquiries should be posted to the Mailing List, rather than sent _privately_ to the originator. This is the only way all can see both the question... and the answer. Many thanks for your anticipated cooperation. YVON L. CYR, cajun@acadian.org Facilitator of Rootsweb's CORMIER Mailing List. Hi Folks: I now have a total of 365 genealogy resource web sites linked from my Acadian Genealogy Homepage, including 148 Acadian-Cajun sites. These may be viewed by connecting to: http://www.acadian.org/hotlinks/ ... and if YOU have a genealogy-related site which is not included, just click "Add a Site" and add the required information. Enjoy. Yvon Cyr cajun@acadian.org
Hi- From the suburbs of Boston, MA, I'm researching CORMIER and BENOIT lineages which are my wife's mother's lines in French Canada. The CORMIER side comes from Cheticamp and (I believe) the BENOIT side comes from Pomquet. Working backwards through the Cormier side: Catherine (wife's grandmother who died 1973), d/o Lubien (b. 1845 & m. Luce ROACH) , s/o Simon (m. Marguerite GAUDET), s/o Simon (m. Rosalie MAILLET) s/o Francois (?), s/o Francois (?) ........ The Benoit side begins with wife's mother, Rita BENOIT, daughter of Catherine Cormier and her husband, Andrew BENOIT (b. 1888 -in Pomquet(?), s/o (?) Remie, ....... Would appreciate any info that "Cousins" or others can supply to fill in blanks or add to what we know. Also, have a question for the list. Does anyone know if there is any collection of photos of Cormiers or the Roach families? We have found, among Catherine Cormier's belongings, an 8 x 10 photo (on canvas or some similar material) of a woman whom we suspect may be Luce ROACH (b. 1845, d.1927). There is no one alive in this branch of the family who can say for sure. We were wondering if anyone else might have a photo to compare it to. Bill Naughton billsland@aol.com
Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this CORMIER Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- (If you haven't already done so), may I encourage EVERY subscriber to tell us a little bit about themselves by posting a BRIEF message to the Mailing List to tell everyone about their interest in genealogy, something along these lines... --------------------------------------------------------------- SAMPLE MESSAGE: "My name is Yvon Cyr and I am the Listowner of over two dozen Rootsweb Mailing Lists, including this one. NOTE 2: Please use your own SURNAME in the "Subject Heading" of your message. For example, an appropriate "Subject" for my message might have been... "CYR, Yvon; Introduction". This will ensure that the message is properly archived. Thanks. NOTE 3: Please do NOT include a _long_ list of surnames in your message (unless it is in your direct lineage). Include only the FOUR main surnames you are researching. NOTE 4: Don't send your message to ME. Post it directly to the Mailing List for all your cousins to see, by sending it to: CORMIER-L@rootsweb.com [For those who are posting to the List for the first time, please note that the word "request" is NOT included in the address and is only used to subscribe or unsubscribe to/from the Mailing List]. Hi Folks: Thought I'd give you a "heads-up" that I will be away from the Mailing List for the next couple of months. During my absence, I would appreciate if all subscribers followed the established guidelines of the List, which may be viewed at: http://www.acadian.org/rootsweb.com For your future reference, I would recommend you print-out a copy of this message and in the event you are required to make changes to your subscription, here's a reminder of what you need to do: 1. TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THE LIST: First you need to determine if you are subscribed to the "L" (List) mode, or the "D" (Digest mode). If you are receiving _individual_ messages from the List, then you are subscribed to the "L" mode. If you receive messages in packets (of 10 to 20 messages), then you are subscribed to the "D" mode. a) To unsubscribe from the "L" mode, merely send a message to: CORMIER-L-request@rootsweb.com ... with the single word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of your message (do not include any signature). b) To unsubscribe from the "D" mode, merely send a message to: CORMIER-D-request@rootsweb.com ... with the single word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of your message (do not include any signature). Note 1: If you have done it correctly, you will receive a "robot" message from Rootsweb, confirming that you have been unsubscribed from the List. Note2: The word "request" in the above-noted addresses, is only used to subscribe or unsubscribe from the List. 2. TO RE-SUBSCRIBE TO THE LIST: a) To re-subscribe to the "L" mode, merely send a message to: CORMIER-L-request@rootsweb.com ... with the single word SUBSCRIBE in the body of your message (do not include any signature). b) To re-subscribe to the "D" mode, merely send a message to: CORMIER-D-request@rootsweb.com ... with the single word SUBSCRIBE in the body of your message (do not include any signature). Note 1: If you have done it correctly, you will receive a "robot" message from Rootsweb, confirming that you have been re-subscribed to the List. Note2: The word "request" in the above-noted addresses, is only used to subscribe or unsubscribe from the List. 3. TO CHANGE YOUR SUBSCRIPTION MODE: Use the above-noted instructions to UNSUBSCRIBE from your present mode, and the similar instructions to re-SUBSCRIBE to the new mode. 4. TO SEND MESSAGES TO THE LIST: You can only post messages to the List, if you are properly subscribed... and your message cannot exceed 20 K bytes, nor can it include any attachments. To post a message to the Mailing List, merely send it to: CORMIER-L@rootsweb.com Note 1: Your message will be posted to BOTH the "L" and "D" modes for everyone to see. Note 2: The word "request" is NOT used in the address (it is only included to subscribe or unsubscribe from/to the List). As you know, all messages posted to the List are permanently archived and I will be reviewing these on my return... "see" ya soon. YVON L. Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this CORMIER Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- Some members of this mailing list, ask why their "reply message(s)" are NOT being posted on the Mailing List. Be assured that I do _NOT_ censor any messages and, if properly sent, they are ALL posted to both the List and Digest Modes. 1. Are you sending your message to the correct address, which is: CORMIER-L@rootsweb.com (Note, the word "request" is not used here... only when you want to subscribe or unsubscribe from the List). 2. Remember, if you use the "Reply" button of your e-mail program, your reply _only_ goes to the person you are replying to (the individual who originally posted the message)...and NOT the Mailing List. In which case, subscribers _don't_ (unfortunately) see your reply. Instead, you should use the "Reply All" button of your e-mail program in order for the CORMIER-L@rootsweb.com address to be added to your message. And then, if you only want your reply to be posted to the Mailing List, delete the e-mail address of the original poster. HOWEVER, be certain NOT to include a long list of other e-mail addresses. Bottom Line: Always make certain that the CORMIER-L@rootsweb.com address appears in the "To" line of your reply messages. 3. Another possibility: The CORMIER Mailing List, is a "closed list" which, from your standpoint, merely means that you must use the same address with which you are subscribed to the Mailing List, in order to be able to have your message posted to the List. So, if you are subscribed under the e-mail address jsmith@msn.com but have a second e-mail address, you MUST use the address under which you are subscribed. As a matter of fact, if you attempt to send a message using jsmith@mail.msn.com your message will NOT be posted to the List. 4. Currently, the maximum size your message can be is 20K bytes...anything larger gets rejected by Rootsweb. So if necessary, reduced the size of your message by sending multiples...i.e Part 1 of 2, Part 2 of 2 etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------- A few other thoughts... a) When replying to a message, "quote" only a portion of the original sender's message...just enough for him/her to remember what the original inquiry was. Delete everything else from the original message (use cut and paste), including any signature and/or taglines. This is especially important when you are replying to a lengthy original message. Of course, if the initial message is very short, you can re-post it in its entirety... but please be certain to remove the "tagline" from same). And, if you are subscribed in the Digest Mode, PLEASE do not attach the complete multiple digest message to your reply...merely cut and paste a portion of the applicable message you are replying to, into your reply. b) Also, in instances where you are _re-posting_ another request for the SAME information, please add the word "REPOST" to the subject line? While I don't want to discourage anyone from re-posting queries (since there are new members joining the list, daily), I note that often the same message gets re-posted once (or even twice) the same week! By adding the word "REPOST" in the subject line, this would provide a quick indicator for those of us who read all messages, to just delete the re-posted message. c) If messages are "bounced-back" by your ISP as being a 'wrong address' (this can occur if your mailbox is full, for example), the Rootsweb software will automatically UNSUBSCRIBE you after a certain number of "bounce". So, if all of a sudden you stop receiving messages from the Mailing List, you should check with me AND your own ISP (Internet Service Provider), to determine why. Note: I usually try to send you sample of "bounced" message to assist you in discussing with your ISP however, if your mailbox is full, you obviously do not receive same! And finally... c) Remember, all messages which appear on the "L" (list) Mode, are also posted on the "D" (digest) Mode. YVON L. CYR, cajun@acadian.org Facilitator of Rootsweb's CORMIER Mailing List. Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this CORMIER Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- TO POST A MESSAGE TO EVERYONE ON THE MAILING LIST: Type your inquiry/response message and send it to... CORMIER-L@rootsweb.com Note that the word "request" is NOT included and is only used to subscribe or unsubscribe from the Mailing List. Your message will be sent to ALL subscribers of the Mailing List. Be certain to keep your "signature" short and sweet. As a matter of fact, your name and e-mail address is all that is required (and recommended). TWO VERSIONS TO CHOSE FROM: You are either subscribed to the "L" Mode (and receive a copy of each messages posted on the Mailing List, in individual messages), or the "D" (Digest) Mode (and receive copy of multiple messages, in a _single_ e-mail). Regardless of which Mode you are subscribed to, you receive a copy of ALL messages posted on the Mailing List. If you are subscribed to the "L" Mode and find you are receiving too many messages from the Mailing List, turn OFF your signature file and then, merely send an e-mail message to CORMIER-L-request@rootsweb.com with the single word UNSUBSCRIBE (only) in the body of your message. This action will cancel your subscription to the "L" Mode. Then, send a second message to CORMIER-D-request@rootsweb.com with the single word SUBSCRIBE (only) in the body of your message. This action will subscribe you to the Digest Mode. TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THE MAILING LIST: First, you must determine if you are subscribed under the "L" Mode (individual messages) or the "D" Mode (digest of multiple messages in a single e-mail). 1. To unsubscribe from the "L" Mode, turn OFF your signature file and then, send an e-mail message to CORMIER-L-request@rootsweb.com with the single word UNSUBSCRIBE (only) in the body of your message. This action will cancel your subscription to the "L" Mode. 2. To unsubscribe from the "D" (Digest) Mode, send an e-mail message to CORMIER-D-request@rootsweb.com with the single word UNSUBSCRIBE (only) in the body of your message. This action will cancel your subscription to the "D" Mode. Note: If you have more than one e-mail address, you MUST send your message from the address with which you are subscribed to the Mailing List. YVON L. YVON L.
