    1. DON'T's and DO's for this Mailing List
    2. Yvon Cyr
    3. Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this CORMIER Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- Here's a short-list of "do's and don't's" which I will be posting here on a regular basis. Many thanks for your cooperation...and enjoy. -DO NOT send attachments (attached files of any sort...this includes v-cards, GEDCOM files, zipped files or any other type of attachment). These messages DO NOT get processed by the Rootsweb software, thus the reason it's not possible for VIRUS to be posted directly to the Mailing List. -DO NOT send copies of complete Digest Mode messages, when replying to a post. Cut and paste the applicable message in your reply, only. -DO NOT repeat the entire "initial" message in your reply. Include only that portion of the message which is necessary to remind everyone, what you are replying to. Delete everything else (including headers, signatures, taglines)...use "cut and paste". -DO NOT use "auto-reply software" since this will result in duplicate messages being posted on the Mailing List. You MUST disable any "auto-reply software" once subscribed to the List. -DO NOT forward virus warnings (most of which are hoaxes), chain letters, "test" messages...or jokes (even _Acadian-Cajun_ jokes)! -DO NOT use signature files wider than 70 characters or longer than 4-5 lines, OR with long lists of surnames you are researching. And please do NOT include any graphics or long list of URL addresses, in your signature. As a matter of fact, you are encouraged NOT to include any signature... just your name and e-mail address. -DO NOT use HTML (styled text) or RTF (rich text format) in your messages...plain text only, no MIME format. Turn off the "Post in HTML'' or "Enriched Text'' features of your mail reader and don't use any attachments. See http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm for instructions on turning off HTML in most of the popular mail programs, or ask your own ISP's technical support line for help. -DO NOT cross-post messages to multiple Mailing Lists (or individuals) in the "To" or the "Cc" line of the e-mail. Use ONLY the CORMIER-L@rootsweb.com address in the "To" field. -DO NOT post messages which are off-topic. This Mailing List is intended to be used PRIMARILY as an exchange medium, for ideas, information and specifics relating to Acadian-Cajun GENEALOGY and HISTORY. The Mailing List is most assuredly NOT the proper forum for discussing/posting Acadian-Cajun jokes, Acadian-Cajun recipes, Acadian-Cajun computer problems (and virus warnings), Acadian-Cajun medical problems, as well as "politically oriented views" vis-a- vis French, English etc etc (add your own list here). -DO NOT use all-capital letters when writing e-mail messages. Similarly, do not use ALL lower case...which makes the message more difficult to read. It only takes a moment to proof-read your message _before_ hitting the "send" button...do so. At the very minimum, use the spell check of your e-mail program. -DO NOT flame other members of the mailing list. I enjoy lively debates (especially when they're educational) as much as anyone...as long as your comments don't get "personal". ----------------------------------------------------------------------- -DO continue to participate actively. -DO encourage your Acadian-Cajun friends to join the Mailing List. -DO review the guidelines to using this Mailing List at... http://www.acadian.org/rootsweb.html -DO enjoy yourself to the fullest. -DO be nice to one another. ------------------------------------------------------------ And finally, as a couple of _former_ subscribers could attest to, if you are contacted privately by me with a request to adhere to a specific guideline/policy, I expect you to likewise reply to me _privately_. This Mailing List is NOT the forum to discuss these matters. Thanks in advance for your anticipated cooperation. YVON L. CYR, cajun@acadian.org Facilitator of Rootsweb's CORMIER Mailing List. 2. The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this CORMIER Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- Every SUNDAY evenings starting at 7:00 PM (Eastern time), all Acadian-Cajun cousins are invited to meet in the ACADIAN-CAJUN Chat Room located at: http://www.acadian.org/chat.html This is your opportunity to "TALK" with all your Acadian-Cajun friends and cousins. Won't you join in? PS: If this is your first time "at the party", you may want to arrive a bit early, in order to have the opportunity to check things and figure out how to enter the 'Chat room". PSS: As we all know, the Mailing List is primarily intended for genealogy-related discussions however, there are times when subscribers might want to discuss a subject matter not quite suitable for the Mailing List. Obviously the ACADIAN-CAJUN Chat Room is an excellent medium for this purpose. While the regularly scheduled Sunday meeting (7:00 PM Eastern) is a _weekly_ happening for the subscribers of this CORMIER Mailing List, keep in mind that anyone...at anytime...can meet to "talk" in the Chat Room. Just (privately) send each other an e-mail message and decide what date/time you want to meet. Then, at the pre-arranged time, click on the URL address: http://www.acadian.org/chat.html ...and follow instructions there, for your get-together. PSSS: You must have your Internet Browser (Netscape, Explorer etc.) java-enabled. If you are not certain how to do this, contact your Internet Service Provided for assistance. YVON L. Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this CORMIER Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- A subscriber to one of the other Mailing Lists which I Facilitate, has offered the following suggestions as a means of increasing the activity on this List: "Would it be possible to start a trend? Each week we concentrate on one (or more) letters of the alphabet for FIRST names of Cormier? We are getting a lot of input this way on another List and great discussions going. As an example, the first week we work on people whose first name begin with the letter A. There can be the usual e-mails covering all subjects concerning the Cormier lines but this might put some spark back into the list. Just a suggestion." I very much support this suggestion and encourage all subscribers to participate. So, for example, let's do this... 1st week: Send (or ask about) any CORMIER names starting with "A" 2nd week: Send (or ask about) any CORMIER names starting with "B" 3rd week: Send (or ask about) any CORMIER names starting with "C" etc. etc. etc. PS1: Anyone on the List can chose an appropriate letter (A, B, C etc.) and start the ball rolling. PS2: Don't send your messages to ME... send them directly to the List at: CORMIER-L@rootsweb.com PS3: This "idea" is NOT to discourage anyone from asking/posting any other genealogy-related information to the List... it is merely intended to be a catalyst to get subscribers to actively participate. 3. Hi, I`m new to this group but not to genealogy. My great-grandmother was Marie-Sara Cormier (B: 1847, D: 1938). She was born in St. Felix-de-Kingsey, Quebec, daughter of Joseph Cormier and Domithilde Robidas, married Edouard Cailler, lived and died in Richmond, Quebec. Her ancestry stretches back to Thomas Cormier (B: 1636, France, D: 1690, Port Royal) who was husband to Madeleine Girouard. I have extensive info on this branch of the Cormiers if anyone is interested. Likewise, I would be interested in information on any descendents or relatives of Marie-Sara Cormier. Regards, John Lee

    3. Hi everyone, I'm not into genealogy at all . . . but I thought it would be interesting to read about other Cormiers from around the world. So that's why I've joined a long time ago. So here it goes. My father is Roger CORMIER, born New Richmond, Quebec May 21 1937. His father was André CORMIER, born St-Alphonse, Quebec September 7 1903. His mother was Bertha CYR (1906-1998) My grandfather André, was the oldest of a family of five. His father Jean Cormier (1877-1909) died of the typhoid at age 31 on October 28 in the hospital in Campbellton, NB. Jean's wife, Emma Leblanc (1871-1953) had given birth to a son just one month before on September 9. Surprisingly enough she gave birth at the hospital (this is 1909). Both her and her husband were in the hospital at the same time ! That son (Joseph Edgar at birth) was adopted at one month of age in 1909 by Adélard Mélançon and his wife of Balmoral, NB. He was named Joseph Mélançon and kept this name his entire life. Later on, Emma had to give up at least two (maybe three I have to check) of her children, because she was so poor, before she finally remarried. Like many many poeple, my family goes back to Robert CORMIER (1610-1712?) from La Rochelle, France. My grandfather wrote his "memoirs", accounts of everyday life really. But there are interesting passages of his life when he was just a boy. I'll translate some of them and send them to the list if anyone's interested. I live in New Richmond, Quebec, in my grandfather's house. . on Cormier Street. . . where also lives my brother (in my father's house) and my father's brother. :-))) Chantal Cormier New Richmond, Quebec

Alice was daughter of Claude Cormier and Dina Gagnon. I know they moved to Montreal after their marriage (which was likely abt 1920s). Alice was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia. 3. Hi Yvon and other listers, I'm one of the many "shy" subscribers on this list, so I thought I'd try to break the ice a bit. You have been very patient with this group Yvon, thanks. Its funny too, because all the Cormiers I know are definitely not on the shy side when it comes to anything in life. The problem I find is that geneology research can be very time consuming, and with 4 young children, I don't ever seem to get to it. But that is also the reason I joined this list, to see if I could get information to come to me in order to save me the time I would have spent searching. So here is a little of what I know via my Father Warren Cormier who was born in Worchester, MA in 1921... My Father's paternal grandparents were Romaine (Raymond) and Agnes Cormier. Agnes' maiden name was Leger, she was half Indian and her family were farmers from Moncton, New Brunswick. The story goes that Agnes and Romaine had a problem relationship of some sort in Moncton, and a single Agnes was sent illegally to the United States by her family to escape Romaine. She was sent to Worchester, MA to live with relatives. Romaine followed her to Worchester to find her and they eventually married. They built a farm house in Worchester near a lake on Pleasant Street. They had 19 children, so I guess they worked things out. I don't have any dates for Agnes, but for Romaine I have him as Raymond P. Cormier, 1860-1936. My Father's maternal grandparents were Henry and Meda Morris. Meda's maiden name was Duclos and her full name was Almeda Duclos. Her birthday was July 1, but I don't know the year. She died sometime in the late 1920's or early 1930's. Meda's parents were Henry Morin (1846-1914) and Virginia Bouvier (1847 - 1915). My Dad had always been told that they were related to the famous Jackie Bouvier Kennedy of Mass, but I don't know if that's true. Henry Morris was born June 1, 1873 and died approximately 1953ish. The story my Dad heard about him is that he was related to Lord Morris of England, but again, I don't know that for sure. My name is Maria Provencher, formally Maria Cormier. When I started asking questions and doing research I also found out that the Cormiers and Provenchers cross paths before my husband and I did. My Dad's only sister, Lil, was married to Edwin Hollbrook Sanders. Edwin's mother's maiden name was Albina Provencher. But that's a whole other project. So there you go, anyone have anything to add for me? As I have written all this, I think my laundry has grown an inch! But thanks for reading, even if you don't have anything to add, I hope you enjoyed it anyway. 3. Hi Deb & other Listers: There are approximately 50 subscribers on each of the CORMIER and BOURGEOIS Mailing Lists, but unfortunately (and sadly), most just sit back and don't participate very much. Thus the reason I tried to get some activity going, by suggesting they write about each FIRST names, on different weeks. YOU could help by posting inquiry messages to see if some of the subscribers respond. Come on Listers... this is YOUR Mailing List and YOU will get out of it, what you put into it. 3. Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this CORMIER Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- [IMPORTANT: Please be certain to read this message in its entirety]. Copyright issues are very complicated and while it is not my intent to discourage anyone from posting the excellent historical information which benefits all subscribers, it is very important that you be made aware of Rootsweb's policy relative copyright: 1. ROOTSWEB'S COMMON-SENSE ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY: Neither Rootsweb nor the Listowner (me) own the material posted on Mailing Lists. YOU OWN YOUR POSTS. When you post messages to this Mailing List, message boards, and other facilities at RootsWeb, those posts remain YOUR property under copyright law and as such, it is YOUR responsibility to ensure that the material posted meets established copyright regulations. 2. ROOTSWEB MAY ARCHIVE AND REDISTRIBUTE: By posting to this Mailing List, you give RootsWeb a permanent license to archive and redistribute those posts, so as to provide current and future users access to your posts,. This policy may be superseded in specific circumstances by other commitments made by RootsWeb. 3. POST ONLY MATERIAL YOU OWN: When you post to RootsWeb, you must either be the copyright holder (that basically means you wrote it), have written permission from the copyright holder, or the material must clearly be in the public domain (which is very often the case). 4. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR POSTS: If you post anything that results in RootsWeb being sued, you are responsible for any costs you incur. They may also hold you responsible for any costs they incur defending themselves. 5. ROOTSWEB RESOURCES MAY NOT BE RESOLD: No RootsWeb facilities -- for example, Web sites, Mailing Lists, and message boards -- may be resold. Public domain content on RootsWeb may not be harvested for commercial or other use, other than as would have been permitted by the Fair Use provisions of American copyright law if the material had been copyrighted. Material written and posted by an individual may not be harvested for commercial or other use, except with the permission of that individual or as permitted by Fair Use. 6. ROOTSWEB MAY REFUSE SERVICE: For violations of this agreement or other policies posted on the RootsWeb site, RootsWeb may revoke the violator's right to use part or all of the RootsWeb site. SUMMARY: As you can clearly see, RootsWeb takes the rights of copyright owners seriously. As their Acceptable Use Policy (above) states, users are expected to post only material they own. Therefore when you post to the RootsWeb's Mailing List, you must either be the copyright holder (that basically means you wrote it), have written permission from the copyright holder, or the material must clearly be in the public domain. For additional information and guidelines pertaining to "copyright", please visit: <http://twp.rootsweb.com/copyright.html> YVON'S FINAL THOUGHT: After reading the massive amount of information at the above-noted link, it appears that the consensus is that one can reprint a PORTION of an article however, reprinting an entire article _does_ violate the copyright. I am certain that most people who do this, do not INTENTIONALLY violate the copyright law, but nevertheless it is important that you protect yourselves. Also, please remember, once a message is posted to the Mailing List, it is automatically/permanently archived by the Rootsweb software and CANNOT be removed from that archive. FYI. AN IMPORTANT PS: The subject of "copyright" is NOT appropriate for this Mailing List. If after carefully reviewing the information at the above-noted link, you have any questions, they should be directed to ME in a _private_ message. YVON L. 3. Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this CORMIER Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- A subscriber to one of the other Mailing Lists which I Facilitate, has offered the following suggestions as a means of increasing the activity on the List: "Would it be possible to start a trend? I very much support this suggestion and encourage all subscribers to participate. 1. How do you get removed from the Mailing List?

    3. Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this CORMIER Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- Once you have joined, there are only _three_ ways a subscriber can get removed from the CORMIER Mailing List: 1. You chose to unsubscribe yourself for whatever reason. 2. I chose to unsubscribe you because you are not following established guidelines. 3. The Rootsweb software automatically removes you from the Mailing List, because messages being sent to your address are being "bounced-back". Item # 1: a) You may chose to "temporarily" unsubscribe from the List because you are going to be absent for an extended period of time. That of course is YOUR decision and when you return, you need only re-subscribe. In this instance, you are NOT required to provide me your name when you re-subscribe, since I already have you in my records. If however, you change your e-mail address before re-subscribing, be certain to send me your complete name. b) You change your e-mail address, in which case, you need to unsubscribe the "old" address and re-subscribe under your "new" address. Here again, you must provide me your complete name for my records (only). Item # 2: a) Very few people get removed from the List by myself...and when they do, it is usually after they've received fair warning that they are breaking established guidelines of the Mailing List (a blatant "flaming" message is one of the few exceptions where a member may be removed without further warning). While I can usually live with heated discussions, I cannot condone and will not accept any personal attacks against any subscriber. b) When subscribers are removed from List by myself, it is PERMANENT and they cannot re-subscribe. Item # 3: a) The Rootsweb software automatically unsubscribe's a member, when a number of messages from the Mailing List have been "bounced-back" (for whatever reason) by the subscriber's Internet Service Provider. While a change in e-mail address can cause this, more often it is because the subscribers Mailbox is full (or exceeds the size allowed by your ISP). b) I am provided a copy of all "bounced" messages by the Rootsweb software and I usually attempt to advise the subscriber...however, sometimes my messages are also "bounced". If you do receive my message, you need to quickly contact your local ISP to have the matter rectified and/or delete some of the messages in your Mailbox (at the ISP server level). c) If you stop receiving messages from the Mailing List (and have _not_ been informed that I was unsubscribing you for cause), you need only re-subscribe by using the information listed at the URL address of my signature. 1. Working on FIRST Names...
    2. Yvon Cyr
    3. Each week we concentrate on one letter of the alphabet for FIRST names of Cormier? We are getting a lot of input this way on another List and great discussions going. As an example, the first week we work on people whose first name begin with the letter A. There can be the usual e-mails covering all subjects concerning the Cormier lines but this might put some spark back into the list. Just a suggestion." I very much support this suggestion and encourage all subscribers to participate. So, for example, let's do this... 1st week: Send (or ask about) any CORMIER names starting with "A" 2nd week: Send (or ask about) any CORMIER names starting with "B" 3rd week: Send (or ask about) any CORMIER names starting with "C" etc. etc. etc. PS: Anyone on the List can chose an appropriate letter (A, B, C etc.) and start the ball rolling. PSS: This "idea" is NOT to discourage anyone from asking/posting any other genealogy-related information to the List... it is merely intended to be a catalyst to get subscribers to actively participate. Enjoy. PSSS: Since all messages are archived by subject matter, I would suggest the following be used as a "Subject Heading"... Subject: CORMIER first names starting with the letter A or Subject: CORMIER first names starting with the letter B etc. etc. YVON L.
