    1. [CORLEW] Edward Corlew and Robert Curtis
    2. Gary Corlew
    3. Tom, You mentioned that Robert Curtis of York Co. made a bequest in his will of his slave, Betty to Edward Corley. His will was probated in 1716. You wanted to determine whether of not this was a misspelling of Corlew, or in fact Curtis intended a bequest to a different person, who in fact was a Corley. Robert's will also mentions his daughter, Katherine Corley. As you know, Edward Corlee's will mentions his wife, Katherine. The will of Edward Corlew, Jr., filed in 1735 and the inventory of his estate, filed in 1749, both mention a slave named Betty. She is valued at 30 pounds in the will 60 pounds in this inventory. Betty must have been given to Edward Jr. by his father during the father's lifetime, since Edward Sr's will does not mention any slaves. Another tie-in between Robert Curtis and Edward Corlew, Sr is the will of Christopher Corlew, who died without children. The will was probated in 1772. Chirstopher is Edward Sr.'s son. The will makes a bequest to Christopher Curtis, who is Robert Curtis' grandson through his son, Edmund. Contingent bequests are also made to Edmund Curtis, Jr and Henry Curtis, Christopher's Curtis' brothers. Therefore, these 3 brothers were Christopher Corlew's first cousins. Based on the above, I am comfortable in concluding that the testator Edward Corlee was in fact Edward Corlew, and that the daughter Katherine Corley mentioned in Robert Curtis's will was actually Katherine Corlew, wife of Edward Corlew, Sr. Gary Corlew On Thu, Jun 9, 2011 at 3:01 AM, <corlew-request@rootsweb.com> wrote: > > > Plain digests are sent to users with all posts listed in one long email. > For > most subscribers, MIME digests will appear with all posts as individual > attachments.
