I am a Corley researcher. There was a John Corley B ca 1695. His family came to VA along the James River in 1675. He was the son of a Richard Corley and ????. They moved progressively up river and our John died young (1743) in Orange Co. Some researchers have his mother as Rebecca Austin but offer no documentation. I suspect it's a case of 1 researcher put his/her theory down and others copied it. This all makes me feel there is questionas to whom Katherine Curtis actually married. There are arguments supporting and refuting both theories. Pro CORLEY * Katherine and John are booth named in Robert Curtis' will as CORLEY * John Corley was the eldest child of that family group, and the only one who would have been old enough to receive a slave. Con CORLEY * The Corleys are not found in York Co at that time but did live up river Pro CORLEW * a Katherine ??? was the wife of Edward Corley who died ca 1728-31 in York Co * They had a son named John Con CORLEW * There was a son older than John, but not named in the Curtis will * John was only 13 years old when Robert Curtis wrote his will I will be looking at the Corlew Will and estate to see if a slave named Betty appears as that is the name of the slave willed to Katherine. If she is there, then there is the proof. If not, then I don't think either the Corlews Nor the Corleys can definitivly claim Katherine Curtis as their ancestor. Any such claim should state "It is suspected that Katherine Curtis married ________ but no definitive proof has been found. There is evidence that she MAY have actually married __________. Until proof is found supporting one husband or the other, we must mark this relationship as 'ASSUMED' or 'SUSPECTED'" What do you think?
