Corlew is very sketchy: Edwin L. Corlew and Elsie Maud (Keeney) Underwood were married 16 December 1907 in Webb City, Jasper, MO. By her first marriage to A. G. Underwood (married March 1901 in Webb City) she had two children: Ansel R. (born c. 1902) and Grace R. (born c. 1904). The family is in Webb City in 1910. The 1920 census shows Ansel R. Underwood in the army in the Panama Canal Zone. I have been unable to find anything on these people other than this. It's possible this is the same Edwin--Webb City, a suburb of Joplin, isn't that far from Bentonville. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I think I've sorted out what he has to say about the Corlews in Montgomery Co IL. I plan to type my notes up tonight before they get cold. I also have a few things left to type into what I already had on the Corlews then I'll be ready to exchange. I have WORD files. Do you have WORD? If you do and don't mind giving me your email, I'd be happy to send everything to you. If you don't have WORD, I can get copies made and sent to you. Do you have any idea how Philip Corlew who married Anna Kincaid in Madison Co KY and moved to Montgomery Co IL is related to Melvina Corlew Grubbs or any of the other misc Corlews who also came to the co. Philip's children were Ellen w/o James Barnett, John (my line), Lindsey d. young, David, William, Eliza w/o Israel Fogleman, Philip Jr, Angelina w/o Morgan Blair, Nancy w/o Joseph Watson. I'm sure they are all related. The same names just keep repeating over and over in all the families, makes me nuts! Would love to hear any ideas you have. Will be glad to share; but, I have almost nothing on those who do not decend from Philip and Anna. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If she was a dau of Elias Harris (d. 1788 in Halifax Co NC) as circumstantial evidence suggests she must have been Phebe Harris, the only dau of Elias Harris without an identifiable husband. Furthermore, at least three of William Corlew's children named daughters Phebe which is a somewhat uncommon name. Does anyone else have further evidence in this matter? Elias's daughter Frances married James Vincent Harper. Thanks, Gary Young Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have been working on the wife of William Corlew who is sometimes said to have been named Frances? I doubt that, but think she was Phebe Harris, daughter of Elias Harris. There seems to be some sort of tradition linking him with that family and the circumstantial evidence is major. Elias Harris's daughter Frances married James Vincent Harper in Halifax Co NC in 1790. Phebe Harris is the only Harris daughter without an identified husband. Since at least three of William Corlew's children named a daughter Phebe, a fairly uncommon name, it seems probable it was Phebe Harris whom he married. Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.corlew/98.1.1.2.1.1.1.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Sorry, this CORLEW line was from VT; any CORLEW in TN would have come from VA. This may help: Alton CORLEW age 13 was enum. 1920 in household of Rube I. [sic] CORLEW, 42, in Tiptonville, Lake Co. TN. Rube was a farmer. Reuben D. CORLEW age 22 was enum. 1900 in household of his brother, Alvin L. CORLEW, 27, in Civil District 2, Lake Co. TN. They were jailkeepers. Alvin and Ruben [sic] CORLEW, ages 8 and 3, were enum. 1880 in household of Robert CORLEW, 27, in District 3, Humphreys Co. TN. Robert's wife is Cordelia. Robert L. CORLEW age 20 was enum. 1870 in household of Thomas W. CORLEW, 47, in District 3, Humphreys Co. TN. Thomas' wife is Susan P. Robert CORLEW age 10 was enum. 1860 in household of T.W. CORLEW, 37, near Palmyra, in Montgomery Co. TN. T.W.'s wife is Susan. Robert L. CORLEW age 1 was enum. 1850 in household of Thomas CORLEW, 28, in Montgomery Co. TN. Thomas' wife is Susan; next door is William CORELEW age 39, poss. his brother. William CORLEW age 60-70 was enum. 1840 in Montgomery Co. TN with household 000002001-0011000001, plus 20 slaves. His sons are a poor fit for the Thomas and William of 1850, who would be 18 and 29. However, also enum. 1840 in Montgomery Co. TN is Benjamin CARLAE or CARLUE with household 011101-301101; Benjamin is a better fit for the father of Thomas, if not William (Jr./?). Benjamin CURLUE is enum. 1830 in Montgomery Co. TN with household 01001-21001, plus one female slave. William CORLEW age 45 was enum. 1820 in Montgomery Co. TN with household 020001-31210. My guess is that this is the same William enum. age 60-70 in 1840, and that Benjamin (age 20-30 in 1830) is one of these two sons b. 1804-1810. I believe you'll find more information at GenForum or the LDS site to take you back further. You might want to get a copy of Gary CORLEW's book, which focuses on the VA family. Happy hunting.
