My deceased husband was a descendent of John Corlew of Missouri. As a matter of fact, my husband, Trelon Wayne Corlew, is John Corlew's great grandson. I think. Anyhow, I think that I have the information that you are looking for. I have in my possession a chapter from a book called "We Were Here" by Larry &Vi Corlew. The chapter has to do with John & Debora (Gore) Corlew. Beyond that it has to do with the relatives all the way back to France. You can contact me at my regular e-mail of ndcorlew@iendeavor.com Thanks and I look forward to corresponding with you. I live in Langley and am a member of the board and past president of the South Whidbey Historical Society. In December, 2012, along with a co-author, I published an Arcadia Press "Images of America" series book on the history of Langley. During that process I learned a lot of interesting local history, but information of some of the doctors and dentists who passed through the town was sparse. Thus, I'm very interested in knowing anything I can learn about Dr. Corlew, his family, educational history, and any other personal stories such as the remembrances you mention. I am also very interested in any photographs. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I remember visiting his house as a kid and walking from there down a path to the private beach shared with his neighbors. We would eat huckleberries on the way down and dig for clams on the beach. There was a small island/rock you could walk out to at low tide. He liked to smoke tobacco in a pipe and had a half wine barrel with goldfish in it on the porch. I don't remember his girlfriend's name, but I do remember her being nice. I'm not sure if he moved to Whidbey Island after his divorce or not until after he retired. My father, James Elton Corlew, originally of middle Tennessee, used to mention some Virginia Corlews. Which was confusing because we had always heard about the Halifax, N.C. connection. I do have some papers somewhere that might name someone in North Carolina and I'll see what I can find. James was one of three sons of Rose Fussell and Walter Corlew, son of Rebecca and Benjamin Corlew who lived along Corlew Bend of the Harpeth River in Middle TN. Walter died young. Several hundreds of acres of land from their farm was distributed to surviving members of that family after Benjamin died. Tom, You mentioned that Robert Curtis of York Co. made a bequest in his will of his slave, Betty to Edward Corley. His will was probated in 1716. You wanted to determine whether of not this was a misspelling of Corlew, or in fact Curtis intended a bequest to a different person, who in fact was a Corley. Robert's will also mentions his daughter, Katherine Corley. As you know, Edward Corlee's will mentions his wife, Katherine. The will of Edward Corlew, Jr., filed in 1735 and the inventory of his estate, filed in 1749, both mention a slave named Betty. She is valued at 30 pounds in the will 60 pounds in this inventory. Betty must have been given to Edward Jr. by his father during the father's lifetime, since Edward Sr's will does not mention any slaves. Another tie-in between Robert Curtis and Edward Corlew, Sr is the will of Christopher Corlew, who died without children. The will was probated in 1772. Chirstopher is Edward Sr.'s son. The will makes a bequest to Christopher Curtis, who is Robert Curtis' grandson through his son, Edmund. Contingent bequests are also made to Edmund Curtis, Jr and Henry Curtis, Christopher's Curtis' brothers. Therefore, these 3 brothers were Christopher Corlew's first cousins. Based on the above, I am comfortable in concluding that the testator Edward Corlee was in fact Edward Corlew, and that the daughter Katherine Corley mentioned in Robert Curtis's will was actually Katherine Corlew, wife of Edward Corlew, Sr. Gary Corlew On Thu, Jun 9, 2011 at 3:01 AM, <corlew-request@rootsweb.com> wrote: > > > Plain digests are sent to users with all posts listed in one long email. > For > most subscribers, MIME digests will appear with all posts as individual > attachments. Author: TomACaulley Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.corlew/134.1.1.1.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm just back from Yorktown and the courthouse again. They raised a stink about making copies from the old book, so I read the will and inventory and quit. The will is indexed as a CORLEY WILL (book 17 page 241/242) The surname in the will reads CORLEE The will names sons Christopher Corlee (their oldest child), John Corlee and Edward Corlee, daughters Elizabeth Wootten, wife Chatherine . No slaves were mentioned in the will or estate inventory, though at least one was mentioned. Problematic to Katherine having married Edward Corlew is the fact that Christopher, the oldest child of Katherine/Catherine and Edward Corlew was not named in in Robert Curtis's will. Problematic to Katherine having been our John's mother is that a John Corlee /Corlew is found in the York Co. records between 1728 and 1731. Our John was in New Kent Co in 1715, 1721 & 1723 and in Orange Co in 1735. Also, our Corleys were not known to have been in York Co. Based on the facts of who lived where when, I tend to think that this is not our John Corley. Tom Caulley Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hi, Tom. This is in regard to your post about Robert Curtis and Edward Corlew. I have not seen any documentation of the date and place of the marriage between Edward Corlew and Katherine Curtis, but I feel Edward and Robert's wills pretty well establish that the marriage was indeed a fact. Below are transcripts of Edward's will and inventory. Don't be thrown off by the apparent spelling “Corlee.” As noted recently in another reply to your post, the name was spelled all sorts of ways. Often, it was spelled multiple ways in the same document! As you correctly noted, Robert's will mentions his daughter, Katherine “Corley.” I have no doubt that this is Katherine Corlew. I don't know why Robert only mentions one grandchild. Anyway, here is the will and inventory of Edward Corlew: *LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF EDWARD CORLEW* In the Name of God Amen I Edward Corlee of the Parish of Yorkhampton in the County of York being sick and weak but being in my perfect sense & memory & knowing the mortality of all men do by these presence make my last Will & Testament as followith Viz. Secondly I bequeath my body to be decently buried in the Earth by the direction of my Executor. & Thirdly my worldly Estate which God has made me steward of here on Earth as followeth: “Viz: I bequeath all my land to be equally divided between my three Sons Christopher Corlee John Corlee Edward Corlee as followeth my Son Christopher land to begin next to his brothers John, at a mark’d sorell & mark’d sasafras to a mark’d red oak to a mark’d holly tree my son John to begin at a mark’d cedar at the head of a spring branch to a mark’d pine from thence to a mark’d red oak runing to a pond that divided and the plantation whereon I live fulfilling those former bonds to my son Edward Corlee to them and their heirs lawfully begotten of their bodies for ever but in case either of the brothers Christopher John Edward should desire to sell their part to each other that then the buyer shall be entitled to that part to him & his heirs lawfully begotten of his body forever but never to sell to any other person but to remain in the generation of the Corlees forever. “Secondly I give to my son Edward one bed & furniture belonging to it. Thirdly to my daughter Elizabeth Wooten one bed and furniture belonging to it. Fourthly to my daughter Sarah one bed and furniture belonging to it after my wife’s decease. Fifthly I leave my Cart and Sheares to be in my Son Christopher’s possession to be for the use of my wife & the rest of Sons belonging to the land & when the Sheare are killed to be equally divided between my wife and my children. Sixthly my great coat & my cane I leave to my son Christopher Corlee. Seventhly my coat of dueoy & breeches to my son John Corlee. Eightly I leave the rest of my cloathes both linen & wollen to my son Edward. Ninthly all the rest of my Estate I lend the use of to my well beloved wife Catherine Corlee during her natural life & after her decease to be equally divided between my Children. And lastly I do constitute & appoint my well beloved wife Katherine Corlee & my son Christopher Corlee my whole & sole Executors of this my last Will & Testament as my hand this 23rd day of December 1728. They moved progressively up river and our John died young (1743) in Orange Co. Some researchers have his mother as Rebecca Austin but offer no documentation. I suspect it's a case of 1 researcher put his/her theory down and others copied it. This all makes me feel there is questionas to whom Katherine Curtis actually married. There are arguments supporting and refuting both theories. Pro CORLEY * Katherine and John are booth named in Robert Curtis' will as CORLEY * John Corley was the eldest child of that family group, and the only one who would have been old enough to receive a slave. Con CORLEY * The Corleys are not found in York Co at that time but did live up river Pro CORLEW * a Katherine ??? was the wife of Edward Corley who died ca 1728-31 in York Co * They had a son named John Con CORLEW * There was a son older than John, but not named in the Curtis will * John was only 13 years old when Robert Curtis wrote his will I will be looking at the Corlew Will and estate to see if a slave named Betty appears as that is the name of the slave willed to Katherine. If she is there, then there is the proof. If not, then I don't think either the Corlews Nor the Corleys can definitivly claim Katherine Curtis as their ancestor. Any such claim should state "It is suspected that Katherine Curtis married ________ but no definitive proof has been found. There is evidence that she MAY have actually married __________. Until proof is found supporting one husband or the other, we must mark this relationship as 'ASSUMED' or 'SUSPECTED'" What do you think? Maybe it was a family feud? Sometimes, maybe, the other kids were all settled alright; They may have gotten their legacy earlier. Sometimes, one child was the one that stayed home and took care of mom, etc. There was no rule that you had to mention all of your family or split all of your money fairly. I'm not familiar with the Curtis family; Was the older brother living for sure at the time? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. She had an older son than John would expect to have been named also. Tom Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It should be in Book # 17 of Wills, Orders, etc. There was also an inventory made of his estate around that time. There should also be wills there for his sons, Edward Jr and Christopher, as well as for Christopher's wife, Ann. Have Fun!
