This trip would have taken some time and they would have camped out. The object was to kill bear and fish. They may have stayed at a lodge in that area. Our museum has a picture of Roosevelt with a local lad; they were laughing and had fishing creels. There were a number of men with T.R. The second trip was in 1903, when Roosevelt was Vice Pres. They came in by stagecoach and spent the first night in the Meeker Hotel; then ate with the rector of the St. James Episcopal Church (Rev. Handel), who was a true chef. We have a copy of the menu and a picture of T.R. with his traveling companions, P.B. Stewart and Dr. Webb and Rev. Handel at dinner. They then went out to Strawberry Creek to hunt Mountain Lions. They stayed at John Goff's ranch and latter at the Ben Long place. Both John Goff and Ben Long guided for Roosevelt and they had a few helpers, so if someone claimed they guided for T.R., it was probably true. The people I am absolutely sure of are John B. Goff and Ben Long. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
