I have been answering anything coming by e-mail and Ardith Douglass, Curator does the research with me. Do you have THIS IS WHAT I REMEMBER? These books are an invaluable resource for family histories from Meeker. If you have the books, I can tell you what pages have your ancestors mentioned and most times there stories. Ardith did look up some information on J. C. Gentry, is that your family? If not just let me know who you need looked up. If your ancestor was in the militia from Aspen that would put him in the Ute War of 1889 (also known as the Colorow War). The Meeker Massacre and the Milk Creek Battle (only known as this) were before anyone was on the reservation except a couple of people on Blue Mountain in the Rangely area and Dunc Blair who was married to a Ute woman and had cattle on Blair Mesa; and the people at the agency, who were all killed except 3 women and 2 children. The Milk Creek Battle (once known as the Thornburg Battle) was the last battle of the Indian Wars between the U. S. Military and the Ute Indians. The Aspen & Meeker Militia were the people who went to fight the Indians in the Ute War. The war was started by some drunken cowboys and the Garfield County Sheriff (Rio Blanco County was formed in 1885.) The cowboys evidently did not know or chose to ignore the treaty which said the Utes could come into this country to hunt and so they shot into the Ute camp, killing a boy. Needless to say the Utes shot back. The cowboys got the sheriff, the sheriff got Militia and the Utes headed for Utah. The sad thing was that the Utes thought they had gone over the border, so they stopped to camp. It turned out they were not in Utah and the parties had a shoot out that killed people on both sides. I hope your Grandfather came through unscathed. The leadership in Meeker realized very quickly that this incident was not caused by the Ute Indians. The sheriff wanted the horses and venison they had killed. Be aware that the Indians did steal white men's horses, also. Not a nice bunc! h of people!! Hope this clears things up. Author: cbliley Surnames: Bliley Classification: biography Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.colorado.counties.rioblanco/14.18.20.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Greetings: (I presume the author from the White River Museum to be Ardith Douglass.) Thank you for the reply and research. over the years, the mystery of my grandfather fighting in the Ute Indian War of 1879 has been slowly lifted. I am not at a point where I can close the door on the research and say I know all of the pertinent facts. I do not, but clarity has been coming along, albeit slowly--measure that in years. In the last year, I have learned there were two conflicts between the Ute Indians and the white settlers of various scales; each was called a "war". I have also found a contemporary reference in a letter written by my grandfather by Frank's sister to him in Aspen, CO in March of 1887 asking on behalf of his mother, not to participate in the campaign. She wrote: "Mother wanted me to write you she don't want you to Volunteer don't join any there company & let the Indians alone you only would be running big chances with your life." [Punctuation as found in letter.] >From reference to this "war" in 1887, it is possible my grandfather joined the forces who went from Aspen to White River to protect the town from any possible Indian attack on the town. An attack did not happen, but apparently he volunteered for that group. Further research is needed. The authors of Frank's obituary did their research and found only one Ute "war" of 1879 and assumed that was the date he was in Colorado. Unfortunately, the newspaper inadvertently transposed the last two digits of the date and presented us with the first major misdirection. I have posted my research and comments on the letter on my family history site at Bliley.net/family/FA_Bliley/Ute/. As it frequently goes, there is always a seed of truth in any family legend, but finding that seed and nurturing it into a real story is another thing. ;-) Thank you for your help. :-) Chuck Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You can pay by Pay Pal, so it is secure. We also have the names of the people who were killed at the White River Agency, plus Josephine Meeker, Arvilla Meeker & Flora Ellen Price and Mrs. Price's two children. And a list of the killed and wounded at Milk Creek. You would have to call the museum and arrange for us to do this for you and it would cost, so be sure and check on that. These things are also in the Meeker book. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Alphabetically the Rigby's are: Charles, Ella Moran, Grace, Herbert, John Robert, John W., Mr. Rigby, Ray, Robert & Ruth Ellen Graves Rigby. The Moultons are: Ada Castiday, Arthur Channning, Ceona Wilson, Channing, Mary & Victor Moulton. You can find histories of some of these people in our oral histories, THIS IS WHAT I REMEMBER.
