Author: caayler Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.colorado.counties.rioblanco/422/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Greetings; It is my privilege to undertake and record the findings of the last Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) soldier or the last Civil War Soldier in each of the 63 counties in Colorado. As Grave Registration Officer for the Dept. of CO & WY, I have visited every county and photographed all of the military and civilian markers of those who served during the Civil War and later moved to Colorado. I know that I will not be able to find all of them. Many had no history or wanted to forget that war. There is one woman I have found, she is buried in Washington County. Her name is; Cyrena Vorce / Civil War Nurse. This request goes out to anyone who might know of the last living CW soldier in their county. It would be greatly appreciated if the information and any history on this soldier can be sent to me. If you have any questions or concerns contact me. Thank you for your time and considerations. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: huntancestor54 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.colorado.counties.rioblanco/421/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hey fellow Ancestor Hunters! I've been doing Ancestry and family trees for almost 20 years now across the USA. I've done thousands of family trees for thousands of families and it has been a blast! Over the last 6 months I've put together the how to guide I wrote on finding your ancestors, breaking down those walls and finding the answers you have had a hard time looking for. You can get a free copy if you would like. In addition to the guide I wrote, I also made a point and click program that works on any computer, PC or Apple, Windows. Gives you point and click access to Census, family trees, cemeteries, Revolutionary War, civil war, WW1, WW2 and Korean War, old land deeds, obituaries old state maps, county formations, Slave index, Indian rolls and hundreds of thousands of searchable newspaper archive from the mid 1850s to today just to name a few along with thousands of Facebook groups and social media groups to network with others, finding family in other states and trading old ancestor pictures! Also threw in my guide to Native American heritage ancestry. Can be difficult figuring out which tribe your ancestors came from. From the thousands of family trees I have done, quite a few of them had roots that went into tribes all across the USA, so I have quite a bit of experience in the area of native American ancestry. All family trees spread out in many states, So I have included every state in my program. Every State and Every county in the USA. So, whether your just getting started in ancestry or if you have been doing it for years, my Ancestor Hunt program will help you out and help you break down the walls. I've also included a database of people across the USA in each state that offer free lookups, so if you can't get to a certain state or if it's too far away just contact these people and they will do their best to help you out, Also included is easy family tree program that is by far the easiest program to create your actual family tree. You can create your tree, Save it, print it out or publish it online, all from my program. If you would like a free copy just send me a e-mail ancestorhunt1958@gmail.com There is a $6.00 shipping handling fee, to cover the shipping and creation of the CD-ROM. As I said before it works on any platform computer. PC, Apple, any version of windows etc. Happy Hunting!! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: polypill Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.colorado.counties.rioblanco/7.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Actually since I sent this email several years ago, I have been to Hayden and Steamboat springs, and found several references to them. Charlie owned some property right down town of Hayden, but sold out before the railroad came through in 1916 or so. There is a creek called Magden still where he had his farm,as I had a nice chat with a local who's family remembered Charlie. I guess there was a fight over water and there was a guy who got shot for cutting off the water through his property not far from the Magden farm. Thanks for checking through the newspapers though, really appreciate it. Are you related some where? Discovered almost all the Magden's in the states come from Denis Magden, from Ulster, Ireland and his two sons. My family goes back to Robert, but William had several wives (interesting is Robert was protestant and William was catholic!!), and about 13 kids. Robert and his wife, Rachel died relatively young from consumption in Michigan, leaving their younger kids living with the older ones. Their oldest son Henry, was Charlie's dad, so I know a lot more now. If you need any info on the Magden family, let me know. There are some Magden's in Ohio, but they changed their name to Magden from a much longer name when they came over from Poland, not realizing that there were Magden's already in the states. Thanks again, Paulyne Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: s_shimko Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.colorado.counties.rioblanco/125.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The two times Theodore Roosevelt hunted in the Meeker area were: The first was in 1901 when he was headquartered at the Colorado Hotel in Glenwood Springs, CO and then rode up to Trapper's Lake, with his guides who included John Goff. This trip would have taken some time and they would have camped out. The object was to kill bear and fish. They may have stayed at a lodge in that area. Our museum has a picture of Roosevelt with a local lad; they were laughing and had fishing creels. There were a number of men with T.R. The second trip was in 1903, when Roosevelt was Vice Pres. They came in by stagecoach and spent the first night in the Meeker Hotel; then ate with the rector of the St. James Episcopal Church (Rev. Handel), who was a true chef. We have a copy of the menu and a picture of T.R. with his traveling companions, P.B. Stewart and Dr. Webb and Rev. Handel at dinner. They then went out to Strawberry Creek to hunt Mountain Lions. They stayed at John Goff's ranch and latter at the Ben Long place. Both John Goff and Ben Long guided for Roosevelt and they had a few helpers, so if someone claimed they guided for T.R., it was probably true. The people I am absolutely sure of are John B. Goff and Ben Long. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The best information we have about Major Thornburg is in the book by Marshall Sprague "Massacre: Tragedy at White River", a book by Mark E. Miller, State Archaeologist of Wyoming "Hollow Victory". The first book is the first book written after the massacre and the second is a definitive study of the Milk Creek Battle, the last battle of the Indian Wars between the Native American Indians and the U. S. Military. Thornburg was killed in this battle. Both of these books are out of print. However, Thomas Tipton Thornburg was born on Dec. 26, 1843 in New Market in eastern Tennessee. He fought as a Private withe 6th East Tennessee Infantry under Col. Joseph A Cooper in the Stones River campaign during the winter of 1862-1863. He entered West Point on July 1, 1863 He was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant of artillery June6, 1863 and rapidly promoted to major, which was likely due to his brother , J. M Thornburgh, a fo! rmer member of Congress. You can obtain the rest of his war record from the U. S. Military. He was married to Lida and you should be able to find more about both of them on Wikipedia or simply putting his full name in a search engine. Also, there is another book, also out of print, that is a history of the Thornburg Family. Since you know where he was born, you may be able to track it down. Sandy @ the White River Museum.
