For those interested in records of the old CF&I steel mill: The Bessemer Historical Society signed a memorandum of understanding with Rocky Mountain Steel Mills (Oregon Steel) this fall to take control, restore and organize the CF&I Archives. Jonathan Rees, professor of history at the University of Southern Colorado, is administrator of a $400,00 HUD grant for the archives project. Three archivists from the History Factory in Chantilly, VA have been working to inventory the material. They are filling out forms that detail what they've seen in each room, including number of boxes and file cabinets, kinds of materials, date range, condition and any conservation measures immediately needed. When they return to Virginia, the information will be entered into a computer data base and a report will be written for the Bessemer Historical Society in January. Some of the material they have found include personnel records, union and labor relations records and engineering records. They have found a list of subsidiaries, including a telegraph company, railroads, a realty company and a wire cloth company. There are books of minutes from CF&I Board of Directors meetings which included John D. Rockefeller's signature. There are vaults filled with photos, publications, old advertising art, film and slides. There are approximately 141 linear feet of microfilm the CF&I made of its records in 1952. Professor Reese said that a a precise survey of all the materials could take as long as 12 years. The Bessemer Historical Society hopes to acquires some of the buildings at the site and create a museum that would feature the collection, and provide an opportunity to do genealogical research.
