Re: Charles McALISTER Any and all suggestions please about how to verify a statement in his obit (Pitkin 1904), saying, "He was a US mail carrier when the country was overrun with Indians and carried the last message from Gen. Thornburg to Agent Meeker just before the Meeker Massacre" (1879). There is no military file on him at NARA. I've checked Carlisle Barracks, PA, and have looked for lists of Crook's scouts and John Steele's scouts who were recruited around western NE/KS where Charles came from. He was said to be carrying mail out of old Ft. Morgan later, abt 1880-1882, and was based primarily out of Pueblo after abt 1885 when not mining in the mountains. I have a 1902 letter to him from a friend J. Mooney in Pueblo stamped, "Gen. Thornburg, D.V.S, Colorado Springs". Does anyone know what D.V.S. stands for? Where are the resources for Gen. Thornburg's staff, civilian or army employees and births at old Ft. Morgan, or Indian Scouts in general? Any suggestions? Thanks, Kathy in NE
