    1. [COPUEBLO-L] Centennial H.S. Graduates List Explanation
    2. Joan M. Alyea
    3. Hello, List, I have sent two sections of Centennial High School Graduates from the book, "Centennial High School Historical Edition -- Pueblo, Colorado" by Robert L. Collyer, published by the Centennial Historical Society in 1973. This book is a comprehensive history of this high school from its founding in 1869. I am posting this list for the information of those who might be interested in the listing, and NOT in response to any particular query. The listing was made by Mr. Collyer, a retired teacher at the school, from the high school records. For those who might want to check the actual book, the Library of Congress Catalog Card Number is 73-80431. I am using my personal copy, but I am sure it is at the Pueblo Regional Library. I just want to end any confusion about why I am posting the list. Joan

    1. [COPUEBLO-L] Colorado State Hospital inmates -- 1920 census
    2. A person named Matilda Rockwell, age 81, b. NY, father b. RI, mother b. CT was enumerated on 15 Jan 1920 as an inmate of the Colorado State Hospital in Pueblo Co., CO. I believe she was my gr-gr-grandmother, widow of Alonzo P. (A. P.) Rockwell. How can I determine when this person died (presuming she died in that location, of course)? My gr-gr-grandmother Matilda Rockwell had been widowed for 10 years and had worn out her welcome with her children by 1920. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. 1. [COPUEBLO-L] HENSEL, LEVI - aka "Bona" Hensel
    2. Matthews
    3. I just joined the list tonight. I am researching the descendents of Frederick Hensel (b. 1774) and am researching all branches. I tracked one of his descendents, Levi "Bona" HENSEL (b. February/29/1832 in Tuscarawas Co., OH, d. March/11/1911) to Pueblo Co. . I requested and received a wonderful Jan. 1978 article from the Pueblo Historical Review written by Eleanor Fry. From this article, I was able to confirm that Levi was definately one of my cousins. Levi was born in OH, probably lived in Bureau Co., IL for a time, was possibly a Pony Express rider, lived in Seneca, KS in the 1860's, served as a 1st or 2nd Lt. in the Civil War, was a correspondent for the New York Times while in Seneca, KS, and then apparently went to Pueblo in the 1870's and worked for the Chieftain. My research on Levi was launched by a gift of an 1865 letter from Levi and his wife Mary Jane to another cousin. I do not know that much about his wives or whether there were any living children. One child died in Kansas. I would love to correspondent with any descendents. Does anyone know whether Eleanor Fry is living and whether some of the research sources for the article may still be available. It mentions an obituary with a picture. 1. [COPUEBLO-L] Help In Pueblo
    2. Gary Barton
    3. Joan, Thanks for posting your message about helping in Pueblo. I'm now in the 3rd year of searching for my BARTON ancestors and have accomplished a lot. But Pueblo still leaves me with lot of unanswered questions. My parents meet, married, and I was born in San Francisco. However, my birth certificate had my dad's birth place as Denver, Colorado. So, after a 3 month struggle to get a copy of his birth certificate from the State of Colorado, I decided to go to Denver and research his family. I took the train there in early june of 1997, spent 6 days in Denver; the Library, Courthouse, and old neighborhoods. I came away with a lot of information about his father the BARTONs and his mother the STUBENRAUCHs. However, on the last day of my research, I discovered the Pueblo connection and had no time left for a visit. So I came home, wrote to Library in Pueblo and got lots of help for the Historical Librarian. The next summer, I decided to go back to Denver again on the train, this time with my wife and a 3 day side trip to Pueblo. I ended up walking from the end of the city limits (2600 Pine) to the Mesa (Library) one day just photographing the houses my ancestors lived in. For early June it was pretty hot, my wife refers to it as the 'trail of tears walk' and vows never to return to Pueblo. As for me, I loved all the time I spent there, it wasn't enough! So, Im coming back again this June, on the train, by myself. There are too many question left unanswered about my BARTON family. The BARTONs arrived around the turn of the century, after surviving the Civil War in Virginia, moving to Tennessee and then Texas before finally settling in Pueblo. The youngest child was my grandfather who left Pueblo in 1905 and moved to Denver. He had a middle brother Norman A. who went to California and died here in San Francisco in the 1920's, his body was sent back to Pueblo and is buried next to their mother Sallie Willie BARTON. Sallie Willie died in 1929 and is buried in Mt View. Her husband Norman P. BARTON went to the Old Soldier's Home in Richmond, Virginia in 1919 and died there in 1923, and was buried in Hollywood Cemetery by the Daughters of the Confederacy. But its my grandfather's three other siblings that leave me baffled as to what happen to them. The oldest brother Fred BARTON worked for Colorado Bridge Company, I lose all trace of him after 1942, the last City Directory entry. He would be 68 at this time, and could not find him buried in any of the Cemeteries. One sister Pearl BARTON married Lee CONWAY, he died in 1930. There is no trace of Pearl in the City Directories after 1939. The other sister Annie (Bessie) Elizabeth BARTON married a STEPHENSON and they disappear from the City Directories in the mid 1930's. All three families were real close as in some years they are living either in the same house or on the same block. I suspect all three families may have moved to a new city together at about the same time. Now to your offer, here are the names of their children, if you can find anything in the school records, it would be of help: Annabell June BARTON(ca1913-) Frances E. CONWAY(1915-) Florence B. CONWAY(1918-) Fred O. STEPHENSON(1908-) Clifford A. STEPHENSON(1909-) Norman S. STEPHENSON(1912-) Maggie L. STEPHENSON(1915-) Thanks for taking the time, One way or another, I will be back in pueblo this June, gary > Subject: [COPUEBLO-L] Pueblo Native > Date: Tue, 22 Dec 1998 19:40:41 -0700 > From: "Joan M. Perhaps it will help. >From "Bent's Fort" by David Lavendar: Wooton was born about 1816. Was raised and fairly well educated on plantations in Virginia and Mississippi. >From "Colorado, South of the Border", by Ralph Taylor: Wooton came to Colorado in December 1858. His ranch was 9 miles north of Pueblo, and he had a house in Pueblo and one of the first stores. He died at age 77, which would make that around 1893. There might possibly be a death certificate in Pueblo County. He had a ranch on the Huerfano and St. Charles River with Joseph B. Doyle (my mother-in-law grew up on the Doyle Ranch and her family lived in the old Doyle house, the "Casa Blanca" or " white house".) >From "Lady of Taos" by Richard Luna. Wooton's first wife was Dolores LeFebre, daughter of Manuel LeFebre. She died on March 6, 1855 at the birth of her 4th child. Children of Wooton and Dolores: Eliza (age 5 at mother's death) Richens (age 4 at mother's death) Frances (age 2 at mother's death) The children were sent to live with their grandparents in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Wife #2 was Mary Ann Manning, a widow. There may have been a third wife, but just a mention of a possible courtship is available. I haven't had a chance to check the Pueblo Regional Library for more information but will take a look after the holidays. Merry Christmas from Pueblo! Joan Alyea

Conard), and about all I have been able to glean about his ancestry was that he was born in Mecklenberg Co., VA, that his parents later moved to Christian Co., KY, and that as a teenager he lived for awhile with an uncle in Mississippi. Being descended from WOOTTONs in Lafayette Co., MS, I have always been curious if there is any relation. Thanks for your help, and Happy Holidays to all! George K. Halsell ghalsell@magiclink.com

    1. [COPUEBLO-L] Merry Christmas

    3. GENEALOGIST CHRISTMAS Twas the night before Christmas When all through the house Not a creature was stirring, Not even my spouse. The dining room table with clutter was spread With pedigree charts and with letters which said... "Too bad about the data for which you wrote; Sank in a storm on an ill-fated boat." Stacks of old copies of wills and such Were proof that my work had become too much. Our children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads. And I at my table was ready to drop >From work on my album with photos to crop. Christmas was here, and such was my lot That presents and goodies and toys I'd forgot. Had I not been busy with grandparents'wills, I'd not have forgotten to shop for such thrills, While others bought gifts to bring Christmas cheers, I'd spent time researching those birthdates and years. While I was thus musing about my sad plight, A strange noise on the lawn gave me such a great fright. Away to the window I flew in a flash, Tore open the drapes and yanked up the sash. When what with my wondering eyes should appear, But an overstuffed sleigh and eight small reindeer. Up to the house top the reindeer they flew, With a sleigh full of toys and 'ole Santa Claus, too. And then in a twinkle, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of thirty-two hoofs. As I drew in my head, and bumped it on the sash, Down the cold chimney fell Santa--KER-RASH! "Dear" Santa had come from the roof in a wreck, And tracked soot on the carpet, (I could wring his short neck!) Spotting my face, good 'ole Santa could see I had no Christmas spirit you'd have to agree. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work And filled all the stockings, (I felt like a jerk). Here was Santa, who'd brought us such gladness and joy: When I'd been too busy for even one toy. He spied my research on the table all spread "A genealogist! " He cried! (My face was all red!) "TonightI've met many like you," Santa grinned, As he pulled from his sack a large book he had penned. I gazed with amusement--the cover it read Genealogy Lines for Which You Have Plead. "I know what it's like as a genealogy bug." He said as he gave me a great Santa hug. "While the elves make the sleighful of toys I now carry, I do some research in the North Pole Library! A special treat I am thus able to bring, To genealogy folk who can't find a thing." "Now off you go to your bed for a rest, I'll clean up the house from this genealogy mess. As I climbed up the stairs full of gladness and glee, I looked back at Santa who'd brought much to me. While settling in bed, I heard Santa's clear whistle, To his team, which then rose like the down of a thistle. And I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight, "Family history is Fun! Merry Christmas! Goodnight!" ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ QUE SARA SARA RUSSELL genemous@ris.net My home page: ( ) ( ) . . http://www.ris.net/~genemous \\ o // w Study the past, live in the present, prepare for the future.

    3. My Grandmother Nelle R Abrams was born in Pueblo April 23, 1890. Her father was an official with the Colorado and Southern Railroad. I believe her mothers name was Eastman possibly from Trinidad. Does any one know of this family? Does anyone know if Pueblo County has birth records this old? Thanks JD Howard
