Kathy, The state mental institution was known as Colorado State Hospital which was in Pueblo. That would be a good starting point to ask about Woodcroft. I remember hearing about Woodcroft as I grew up in Pueblo, but don't remember the details. I am sure the historical society which is based at the Pueblo Public Library could be of some help with information about both institutions and dates of operation. Hi Everyone I am new to this list and was hoping someone might be able to help me with this: My 2GG, was George William BROWNEWELL and he died there in Pueblo, Pueblo county, CO in 1910. In the 1910 Census, he was listed as living (an inmate) at the Woodcroft Hospital and School for Feeble Minded Children, Pueblo , CO. He died of Paresis (partial paralysis). I believe this was the State Asylum as it was stated so on his death certificate. Is this institution still there and if so, would there be any records available? Also, was this place used as a modern day nursing home for people like him (being partially paralyzed) or would his being there mean he was insane? I thank anyone who can help me on this. William and Sarah were married in Arkansas and they are in census record of Scott Co. AR. in 1880 having married in that same year. She was 15 and he was 23. A letter written by her brother Peter in 1914 to a cousin states Addy was living in Pueblo, Colorado. Sarah Adella was born in AL. and was the youngest child of Joseph Rice and Rhoda Ramsey Austin Rice. Joseph is my ggggrandfather but I am descended through his first wife. MAYSEY seems to be an unusual name so if anyone has ever heard of it I would be very interested. Would love to hear from a descendent of William and Sarah Adella. Thanks for any assistance. I spent summers in Beulah as a kid because my parents owned cabins they rented out year-round. Beulah was VERY small in the 40s and 50s, let alone as early as your ancestors were there. You might try looking for records for Rye, Colorado if you find nothing under Beulah. Rye was very close to Beulah and larger, but still quite small. There was no local government office in Beulah, only a small post office across from the Beulah Inn. They had one fire engine just a bit larger than a Jeep Wagoneer. The settlement was a tiny community of cabins and a half dozen businesses at the most. -----Original Message----- From: Laurie Daugherty [mailto:hobran1@prodigy.net] Sent: Wednesday, May 31, 2000 12:09 AM To: COPUEBLO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [COPUEBLO] Fw: Grandparents of 1800's Beulah homestead -----Original Message----- From: LARRY V WOLFORD <lwlfrd@juno.com> To: hobran1@prodigy.net <hobran1@prodigy.net> Date: Thursday, May 25, 2000 2:13 AM Subject: Grandparents of 1800's Beulah homestead >Can any one give me info on my Great grandparents or Grandparents in >Pueblo county at Beulah CO.My Grandmothers birth certificate say's she >was born in Beulah in 1881 as Maude BERRY,she had brother Charlie and >sister Minnie plus other siblings. Her mothers maiden name was >Llewellyn.Thank you LARRY >WOLFORD LWLFRD@JUNO.COM
