    1. [COPUEBLO] Bessemer Historical Society

    3. For those interested in records of the old CF&I steel mill: The Bessemer Historical Society signed a memorandum of understanding with Rocky Mountain Steel Mills (Oregon Steel) this fall to take control, restore and organize the CF&I Archives. Jonathan Rees, professor of history at the University of Southern Colorado, is administrator of a $400,00 HUD grant for the archives project. Three archivists from the History Factory in Chantilly, VA have been working to inventory the material. They are filling out forms that detail what they've seen in each room, including number of boxes and file cabinets, kinds of materials, date range, condition and any conservation measures immediately needed. When they return to Virginia, the information will be entered into a computer data base and a report will be written for the Bessemer Historical Society in January. Some of the material they have found include personnel records, union and labor relations records and engineering records. They have found a list of subsidiaries, including a telegraph company, railroads, a realty company and a wire cloth company. There are books of minutes from CF&I Board of Directors meetings which included John D. Rockefeller's signature. There are vaults filled with photos, publications, old advertising art, film and slides. There are approximately 141 linear feet of microfilm the CF&I made of its records in 1952. Professor Reese said that a a precise survey of all the materials could take as long as 12 years. The Bessemer Historical Society hopes to acquires some of the buildings at the site and create a museum that would feature the collection, and provide an opportunity to do genealogical research. Membership in the society is open to the public and starts at $15.00. If you are interested in joining the society (as I am), contact Cathy Garcia at CGarcia51@prodigy.net and she'll send you an application. If you are interested in contributing items to the society, she is the one to contact, too. Cathy told me this morning that a web site is being set up for the society, and she'll let me know when it is ready to go. Then I'll post that information right away! This is great news for all of us who have Pueblo roots. Joan Alyea Pueblo, Colorado

    3. Want to thank everyone who shared their memories of the CREWS-BEGGS department store. Sounds much like our Christman's and Newman's department stores of which I too have many fond memories. Apparently your Crews-Beggs changed from a coffee seller in the teens to the department store in the 20's or 30's. The picture I have shows very little of the store itself-- mainly the delivery truck and the three young men beside it. in what was probably the fashion of the teens. Connie Schofield

    3. There is a new group called "The Bessemer Historical Association" which has been formed to take charge and maintain the old CF&I archives. These archives were finally obtained from Oregon Steel, the present owner of the steel mill. An old building near the mill, I think on steel mill property, will be restored to house the archives in proper form. The archives are important as they contain not only the history of CF&I but are also valuable for the history of Pueblo, particularly the old South Pueblo. As far as I know, they are not presently available to the public as much work has to be done to organize and preserve as well as develop the property. You may contact the Pueblo Chieftain at library@chieftain.com (the newspaper archives department or write Pueblo Chieftain at P.O. Box 4040, Pueblo, CO 81005. Phone number is 544-3520. They would probably be willing to send you copies of recent articles about the CF&I archives. I didn't save the articles myself, but some did appear in the past few weeks. The newspaper's web site is http://www.chieftain.com You might also want to contact the Pueblo City-County Library. Their web site is http://www.pueblolibrary.org Hope this helps. Joan Pueblo

    3. Crews-Beggs Department Store was located at the south-east corner of 4th and Main Streets in downtown Pueblo. It was a four-story granite building with basement. It carried everything. It also had the only public restroom for women in the basement. I more or less grew up shopping there. During the Christmas season, a huge live pine tree was mounted outside on the corner of the building and lit up. It was later bought by Joslin's. When Joslin's moved to the Pueblo Mall, the old Crews-Beggs building was demolished. For a number of years, there was a huge hole in the ground, until the city fathers demanded it be filled in and used for parking. Other early department stores in downtown Pueblo were C.C. Anderson, a smaller store (2 stories plus basement) across the street from Crews- Beggs on 4th Street, and White and Davis, at the corner of 6th and Main Streets. Joan Pueblo

    3. Connie, Crews-Beggs was a multi-story (I think 4 or 5 floors) department store at the corner of 5th and Main Streets in the heart of downtown Pueblo. The store flourished into the 1950's and then succumbed to the competition when shopping centers began to spring up in the suburban areas. I don't know the exact date of the store's closing. It may have been in the early 60's, I just don't remember. I would love to see the picture!
