Deloris, The Spanish Flu was especially harsh to my grandfather (Thomas Ripley COPELAND Jr) and his family. My grandmother, Bervice Florella HUDSON, was his third wife. The following is taken from Bethune Observer (Kershaw Co SC) Oct 31, 1918: "The hand of affliction has fallen heavily on Mr. Ripley Copeland, of Lancaster, during the past two or three weeks from the effects of Spanish influenza. Mr. Copeland, and all of the members of his family were stricken with the disease. His little daughter, Ethel, first died, then his little son, Lee, passed away. His wife is very low and is not expected to survive and himself and baby are very sick. His first wife and baby died about a year and a half ago. Mr. Copeland is the youngest brother of Mr. J.E. Copeland of this town and formerly resided here." My grandfather and infant son, Thomas Ripley III, survived...but he lost his wife, son, and daughter. Just sharing my families experince with Epidemics... Fred, Your post made me a bit curious. Are you perhaps related to Mason Langston Copeland of Laurens County, SC? He married a distant cousin of mine, Sarah Ball abt. 1903. Mason was born in SC 26 May 1862 and died 03 Sept. 1944 and is buried in the Laurens City Cemetery, Laurens, South Carolina. Sarah's parents were Beaufort Watts Ball and Eliza Watts-Ball. Her brother, William Watts Ball, was a very well known, outspoken Managing Editor of the Charleston "News and Courier". Something else caught my attention... William Watts Ball's daughter, Katherine, married Clements Ripley. Together, they were very popular writers from the late 1920's to late 1950's. Let me know if any of this is familiar to you. Fred, I seem to recall reading some years ago about an outbreak of tuberculosis or typhoid that had stricken certain regions of North Carolina around 1900, but I haven't found where I read that in a long time. I'm bringing this up because I have a number of ancestors who died around that time in Warren & Halifax Counties in North Carolina, and I know there are there are others also researching ancestors in various counties in NC who may have found the same thing. It wasn't the Great Spanish Flu Epidemic, which seems to have peaked around 1918, but I have heard about the TB outbreak in particular, from older family members. There seems to be no reference to that in any of those websites I listed, however, so I tend of believe it was more of a region specific outbreak, and it could also be something for other researchers to keep in mind about ancestors who disappeared quickly around that time.
