What, if anything, does anyone know about the following person: Copeland, John . . . . . . 21 (100 acres) (Listed as "Copland" in land warrants) Went from Belfast, Ireland to Charleston, SC on the Ship "Nancy" in 1767. Also aboard this ship was a William Moore, whose descendants intermarried with the Copeland family some years later, possibly a coincidence, but maybe not. Also, I have long been tracking James Russell Copeland, father of Demetrius Colvin Copeland. James Russell says in a census, 1880 I think, that he was born in TN. I came across something the other day that mentioned a Demetrius Copeland who would have been of the right age to be James Russell's brother in Overton Co TN. Does anyone know anything about the old Demetrius from TN? It is an unusual name. Thanks, Karen Rice
I meant to say "the older Demetrius" - just keyboarding too fast. Karen, Would this be the John Copeland who filed for a Revolutionary War Pension in Logan County, Kentucky in 1834? I'm not researching this person but I have a number of Revolutionary War Pension files I've collected and this is one of them. Your message rang a bell because this John Copeland's pension file actually gave more info about himself than most others I've come across, and he did mention that he was born in Ireland in 1760. He states that at the age of 14, he migrated with his father to America and settled in York County, in what was then the Colony of South Carolina. He enlisted as a volunteer in the Revolutionary War and fought against "the British and the Indians who were causing offensives against the South". If you don't already have a copy, I can email you one, if you would like. Let me know. Yes, Deloris - thank you. I would very much like a copy. I know this is nuts - trying to work forward to someone, but working back hasn't gotten me anywhere for thirty plus years. I wonder, though, if it is the same person. If he was born in 1760, he would have been 7 at the time of his immigration, and you say the pension application mentions he was 14. I'm pretty sure the John Copeland/Copland on the ship's roster for the Nancy had to be at least 21, because he is listed as "21, and receiving a 100 acre headright."
