The following is information about David Copeland. It is a lot of information, but the detail is needed to shed light on the parentage of Rachel Copeland -------------------------------------- Information about David Copeland July 20, 1754. David joined the Warrington Meeting. (Warrington Monthly Meeting Minutes, LDS reel no. 22203) October 16, 1756. "David Copeland and Rachel Stanton, both of Newberry, declare intentions: Peter Stout, Adam Red, Margaret Carson and Margaret Stout to inquire." (Warrington Meeting Minutes, LDS microfilm reel no. 0387937, p. 53) November 24, 1756. David Copeland ("Copelan"), son of Richard Copeland, married Rachel Stanton, daughter of John Stanton, at Warrington Monthly Meeting. Attendees included: First column: John Finley Joseph Hutton Joseph Bennett Lidia Copeland Samuel Harris Second column: Richard Copeland (father of the groom? Did he and Susannah and Sarah sign their names at the top of the wrong column by mistake?) Susannah Stanton (Rachel's sister; married Henry Willis Junior, son of Henry Willis Sr, in 1757) Sarah Stanton (Rachel's sister) Peter Stoute Margaret Stoute Samuel Stoute Phebe Bennett (daughter of Joseph Bennett; married John Willis, son of Henry Willis Sr, in 1757) James Hill Josiah Moffet John Micle David Hill Antoney Little Charles Stoute William Willis (first cousin of Henry Willis Sr.) Third column (usually these are close relatives): David Copeland (groom) Rachel Copeland (bride) John Stanton (father of the bride) Sarah Stanton (mother of the bride) Mary Copeland (perhaps mother of the groom) William Copeland (brother of Richard Copeland?) Thomas Copeland (possibly a son of Richard's brother William) James Copeland (possibly a son of Richard's brother William) John Copeland (possibly a son of Richard's brother William) Henry Willis (either Henry Willis Sr. or his son Henry Willis Sr., who married Rachel's sister Susanna in 1757) Joel Ferree Philip Ferree Daniel Stanton (a brother of Rachel) Margaret Carson March 25, 1758. David Copeland appointed Supervisor of Highways for Newberry Township. (Court of Quarter Sessions, York County, LDS no. 1449257) August 8, 1760. "David Copeland, William Stanton, and Daniel Stanton ... accompan(ied) their sister to a priest to accomplish her marriage .... " (This was Sarah Stanton, sister of William and Daniel.) April 11, 1761. David produced a paper at the Monthly Meeting saying he was "heartily sorry" for "accompan(ying) my wife's sister to her marriage ... by a Priest ... " 1762. David was on the York County personal property tax list, Newberry Township ("Alphabetical Listing of the Assessed Inhabitants of York County ...", Special Publication 5, October, 1978, The South Central Pennsylvania Genealogical Society). Last Tuesday of July, 1762 (Book 6, p. 74). David Copeland gave 25 pounds security "for the appearance of Rachel Willis at next Session to give Evidence" in a lawsuit against Ann Miranda. I am not sure who Rachel Willis was. The only person named Rachel Willis known to be living at this time in York County was the wife of a gunsmith named Henry Willis who lived south of where the Yellow Breeches Creek entered the Susquehanna River. But the family of Henry Willis the gunsmith was not related to the Willises who were associated with the Copelands and Stantons. 1765. David is on the Constable's return for Newberry township. Owned 100 acres, 20 cleared, 5 sowed, 2 horses, and 2 cows, and 5 sheep. John Stanton is listed immediately above David. June 14, 1766. "David Copeland is deficient in paying a just debt to William Griffith." (Warrington Monthly Meeting Minutes, LDS reel no. 0387937) December 13, 1766. "David Copeland has satisfied the complainant." (Warrington Monthly Meeting Minutes, LDS reel no. 0387937, p. 140) February 7, 1767. "David Copeland's affairs not so well as he had given to expect." (Warrington Monthly Meeting Minutes, LDS reel no. 0387937) March 14, 1767. "David Copeland has satisfied the complainant." (Warrington Monthly Meeting Minutes, LDS reel no. 0387937) July 9, 1768. "Newberry informs that John Stanton and David Copeland are deficient in paying debts due John Garretson: Joseph Hutton and Riccord Hussey to treat with them." (Warrington Meeting Minutes, LDS microfilm reel no. 0387937, p. 157) 1777. On tax list for Newberry Township. (Fines, Assessments, and Appeals Warrants, LDS 0022231) 1779. David was on the 1779 tax list, Newberry Township. One horse, one cow, no land. Jan. 30, 1781. On tax list for Newberry Township (1777 Township Assessments and Appeals Warrants - York County, LDS 0022231). Between 1775 and 1782 there are several entries in Warrington Meeting records showing that David's father-in-law John Stanton and and wife were in financial difficulties. They apparently became physically disabled (see Benjamin Walker's diary notes below). The Warrington Monthly Meeting contributed money for their welfare .... Eventually, his son in law David Copeland took them in. June 11, 1782. "David Copeland their son in law is willing to take John Stanton and wife and provide for them for about fifteen pounds a year" (p 273). John and his wife died in September 1782. The following two entries are from a diary of grave digger Benjamin Walker (provided courtesy of Edna Morrisey): (year 1782) .... (1) p.15: "5th month, 21st day, 3rd day of the week ..... halled John Stanton to Newbury to David Copland he is to keep John and his wife Sarah for 14 lbs. a year they are a Meeting Charge." (2) p.18: 9th month, 30th day, 2nd day of the week .......Sowing this John S! tanton & wife was Buried in one Grave 10th month, 1st day, 3rd day of the week.......Ditto" ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Parents of Rachel Copeland There is no absolute proof that Rachel Copeland is a daughter of David Copeland and Rachel Stanton, but the circumstantial evidence is convincing. July 12, 1783. "Rachel Copeland married out to one not a member... Sarah Copeland accompanied her sister to her marriage." (Warrington Monthly Meeting Minutes, LDS reel no. 0387937, p. 283) The above record establishes that Rachel Copeland and Sarah Copeland were sisters. Sarah Copeland married Jesse Willis about June 1783 in York County (I have not checked the primary source for this marriage. I got the marriage date from Family Tree Maker's World Family Tree No. 7, Pedigree No. 3436. I believe the information is credible, based on various other evidence.) Jesse and Sarah Willis were accepted into membership at the Warrington Monthly Meeting on May 13, 1786. May 11, 1793: "Jesse Willis of Newberry with Daniel Bonine and Thomas Jennings request advice, as they are planning to move into a new state to settle, at a considerable distance from any monthly meeting." August 9, 1794: "Jesse Willis and wife Sarah and issue: William, Isaac, John and David removed from Warrington, York County PA to Westfield, N.C." Quaker records show that they eventually settled in Wayne County, Indiana. The above-mentioned Daniel Bonine was married to Mary Copeland, who is a third Copeland sister: Mary Copeland married Daniel Bonine November 17, 1779 in Newberry Meeting, York County, PA ("100 Years at Warrington," Margaret B. Walmer, page 86). Mary signed with a mark (capital letter "M"). People listed in the third column (family members) are the following: Daniel Bonine (groom) Mary (M her mark) Bonine (bride) Rachel Copland <===== Sarah Copland <==== Mary Bonine Hannah Bonine Hannah Dain John Copland Wm Matthews William Randles Timoth Kirk John Garretson James Hancock James Bane In the above guest list Rachel Copeland and Sarah Copeland are listed one line below Mary Copeland (now Mary Bonine). The three sisters Rachel, Sarah, and Mary may have had a little sister named Ann: March 8, 1788. "Ann Glancey formerly Copeland fante (sic) married by magistrate" (Warrington Monthly Meeting Minutes, LDS reel no. 0387937) The "Glancy" who Ann married may be a brother of Jesse Glancy, husband of Rachel Copeland. July 8, 1786. "Sarah Willis appeared and acknowledged her fault in accompanying her sister to accomplish her marriage by a hireling teacher." (Leslie B. Potter, April 2002) Sarah Willis is the Sarah Copeland wife of Jesse Willis. The marriage might have been Ann Copeland's marriage to Glancey. Probably need to re-check the date. ------------------- I do not know who Richard Stanton's wife was. Her first name might possibly have been "Mary," judging from the sequence of names in column three of the guest list for the marriage of David Copeland and Rachel Stanton (above). ----------- Dave Willis
