Martha Johnson on 17 Nov 1744 in Isle of Wight Co VA. This James died after 1790; he is said to have gone to Mississippi Territory after living in North Carolina. It is SO easy to get these Copeland families confused! Sometimes the only clues are in the approx. dates of birth. What I have: James, the son of James and Diana, was born abt 1734 in Chowan Co NC. The James who married Diana was born abt 1691 in Middlesex Co VA., Herman indicates James, s/o James (1691, Middlesex,VA) & Diana, m. Eliz. and theyt had: John, Daniel, James, Lillah, Silvey, Liddy, Elizabeth, Franky, Susannah, Sally Dolly, David, Anne, Cleo He was, apparently, not aware of any other marriages. But, looking at the list of kidlets, it looks very possible. From Bill Copeland, I have a wife named Elizabeth Martha Johnston, only. But, notice that there are two girls in the list of kidlets named Elizabeth and Sally - which hints that the Sally you have as a wife, could've been #2. It's unusual to get so much information on a spouse in this line which makes me doubt that the Elizabeth Martha Johnston that I have is just one person. Note, there's no girl child named Martha - tho, she, if she was another wife, could've been past child-bearing age Back to John (b. 1780 NC, d.1844 OH) There's a little info on him from Herman: "In Surry Co. NC with wife Judith Rawson in 1792 until 1812 when he moved to Ohio. He bought 300 acres of land in Surry Co. NC on 18 March 1788. On 30 Sept. 1811, he sold that 300 acres. He's listed as a taxpayer in Greene Co., OH, Silver Creek Twp in 1813. He moved w/son Joseph, to Liberty Twp., Clinton Co., OH by 1820. He lived in that county until he died in 1832." What's interesting to me is that Herman's index has not one single Nicholas listed. It has to be a different line than the one I'm pursuing, for example. Or, Herman missed something down the line. When I can get the time to do so, I'll try to pass on the references - people - and books that Herman mentions in his book. I repeat, that book is not available to purchase, as far as I know. The author is dead. Ohio Gen. Society has a copy which can be lent to members - thru the mail. jean according to my notes. And the James who was the son of Nicholas and Nancy was born abt 1697 in Isle of Wight, VA. dotsicle ==== COPELAND Mailing List ==== To contact the List Admin: mailto:COPELAND-admin@rootsweb.com To unsubscribe from List Mode: mailto:COPELAND-L-request@rootsweb.com?subject=unsubscribe To unsubscribe in Digest Mode: mailto:COPELAND-D-request@rootsweb.com?subject=unsubscribe AOL USERS: Send an email to:COPELAND-L-request@rootsweb.com (In Digest Mode change the "L" to a "D") with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message. ============================== New!
