Hi Carolyn Ok where do you live? Do you know when/ where Wiilliam died? Have you gotten a death cert? Looked for cemetery?If in US was he naturalized? These are all records that can give a clue. hi sue.. i was told he was born in n.c. in 1801 and his wife mary in tenn. or ga. from census records. ill fwd. you what i have and see if we can figure it out.. thanks.. pardon my typos and awful typing.. just got my nails done and she made them too long and my keyboard needs to be replaced. :)) Carolyn census info and etc: It took some digging but I finally found Henry C Copeland's family in TX in 1860 and in AR in 1850. I also found his and his brother's service in the CSA, too. 1860 Hopkins co TX, Bright Star, pg 190 note: Bright Star is now known or also known as Sulphur Springs *gh Mary Copeland 44 SC George 24 AR Henry 20 AR Columbus 18 AR Adaline 16 AR James 12 AR Annie 10 AR Eldridge 7 TX Annie 2 TX After I found this one I started digging in AR in 1850...that takes a little more doing because the 1850 census is not indexed on Heritage Quest, so I went to each county where I found an index for 1850 in census-online. I looked through all of them...and the very last county that had any Copelands listed was where I found them. They were listed alphabetically and I found them in Scott Co AR. :) 1850 Scott co AR Boone Twp, pg 140b William Copeland 49 NC Mary 37 TN George W 14 AR Henry C 9 AR Christopher C 6 AR [Columbus in 1860 census] Adaline 4 AR James M 3 AR Ann 4/12 This site http://gen.1starnet.com/civilwar/9thinf.htm is where I found Columbus C Copeland age 20 b abt 1841 pvt., Co F enlisted 12 Oct 1861 at Bright Star Henry C. Copeland age 21 b abt 1840 pvt., Co G enlisted 8 Oct 1861 Tarrant I found George W. Copeland in the 4th Regiment, TX Cavalry (4th Mounted Volunteers) at http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm After finding all this I got to wondering "why would Henry go to AL when he couldn't find is family after returning from the war?" So I looked up the 9th infantry and found this: 9th Regiment, Texas Infantry (Maxey's) (Young's) 9th (Maxey's) Infantry Regiment [also called 8th Regiment] was organized during September, 1861. The men were recruited in Galveston and Paris, and Titus, Llano, Collin, and Lamar counties. It moved east of the Mississippi River and saw action at Shiloh and Perryville. Later it was assigned to General P. Smith's and Extor's Brigade. It fought at Murfreesboro, served in Mississippi, then participated in the campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to Nashville. Ordered to Alabama, it ended the war at Mobile. This regiment lost thirty percent of the 226 engaged at Shiloh and thirty-eight percent of the 323 at Murfreesboro. Few surrendered in May, 1865. Its commanders were Colonels Samuel B. Maxey, Wright A. Stanley, and William H. Young; Lieutenant Colonels William E. Beeson and Miles A. Dillard; and Majors James Burnet, W.M. Harrison, and James H. McReynolds. http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm Since he had finished his service in AL, maybe he liked it there and/or had met the Eubanks family and decided to return. I don't see anything that indicates that his family had ever been there before. It will take some more digging to determine what happened to his family.
