Christopher, The John I am looking at was born about 1797 in South Carolina, so I don't think we have a "match." Have you read about the Scots-Irish? I'm theorizing that the Copelands who came to Pennsylvania, the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and western North and South Carolina (before crossing the mountains into Tennessee and Kentucky) were in one of the four waves of immigrants from Northern Ireland (Ulster) who were originally from the lowlands of Scotland. The two books that I've found interesting are: (1) James Leyburn, "The Scotch-Irish, A Social History, " 1962 (academic) and (2) James Webb, "Born Fighting: How the Scots-Irish Shaped America," 2004 (not so academic). I'm having some difficulty locating John's parents, grandparents, and siblings. I am hoping to connect with other members of this family who might know more about John's origins. I have seen some information which states that the Copelands originated in Ireland before coming to PA and SC, and my ultimate goal is to trace the family back to their origins in Ireland or the UK. Does anyone on the list have additional information on this family? Thanks in advance for any help, Christopher --------------------------------- Want to start your own business? Learn how on Yahoo! Hi Harlan, No, it doesn't look like we have a match, but those books on the Scotch-Irish certainly sound interesting. I'd like to read those at some point. Thanks again, Christopher Harlan Copeland <copel005@umn.edu> wrote: Christopher, The John I am looking at was born about 1797 in South Carolina, so I don't think we have a "match."
