Two years ago I visited my Daddy, Richard Delbert Copeland and Mother, Betty Copeland in MO. Daddy had a great desire to learn of his ancestry and hopefully connect with some living relatives. His excitement was so awesome I had to begin a search for him that day and recall him seeing the Copeland name on a website and his smile as he read every word. Only 18 days after I returned to California we lost Daddy unexpectedly and he was never honored in seeing any information on his family so I am now starting again to honor him and carry on his research of his father Richard Sylvester Copeland, mother Flora Williams-Copeland-Hooker, g-father Benjamin Copeland. Any assistance will be much appreciated. Janice Copeland-Cantu [email protected]

I would appreciate any information that might verify this information.
New information: You may have read this request when I first posted it but since then I discussed it with a cousin and he suggested that it was likely that my COPELAND family would probably be living and working in Baldersdale on the reservoir construction sites of Hury and Blackton and they could appear on the census returns for the neighbouring parishes of either Romaldkirk or Cotherstone. As I said previously: "I am almost certain that the Joseph in the 1881 Census is my great grandfather. When I looked at the 1901 British Census I got what appears to be the same parents but a different family (see below). I know that Joseph, Elizabeth, James and Harry in the 1901 census are my granduncles and grand aunts. If the 1891 British Census shows some of the children from the 1881 census [William; Martha; Mary; Margaret] and some from the 1901 census [Joseph; Elizabeth; James; Harry(?)] then I would know that they were the same family. On the other hand if it only showed children from the 1901 census then that would be an answer too! (I sometime wonder if Joseph Snr had two wives - the first one dying because an English aunt who has been a great help never mentioned the children in the 1881 census with the exception of Margaret who was her mother and my grandmother 1881 British Census Dwelling: 5 School Str Census Place: Hillmorton, Warwick, England Source: FHL Film 1341735 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 3080 Folio 19 Page 1 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Joseph COPELAND M 31 M Wigtonsh Glen Luce, Scotland Rel: Head Occ: Blacksmith Elizabeth COPELAND M 28 F Wigtonsh, Scotland Rel: Wife William COPELAND 5 M Ayrsh Ayr, Scotland Rel: Son Occ: Scholar Martha COPELAND 3 F Ayrsh N K, Scotland Rel: Daur Mary COPELAND 1 F Kilsby, Warwick, England Rel: Daur Margaret COPELAND 5 m F Hillmorton, Warwick, England Rel: Daur 1901 England and Wales Census Dwelling: Hisehope Census Place: Muggleswick, N W Durham, England Source: PRO Ref 13/4667 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Joseph COPELAND M 52 M Scotland Rel: Head Occ: Blacksmith Elizabeth COPELAND M 49 F Scotland Rel: Wife Joseph COPELAND 18 M Yorks Rel: Son Occ: Railway E Stoker Elizabeth COPELAND 17 F Durham Rel: Daur Occ: Dressmaker own account at home James COPELAND 12 M Essex Rel: Son Occ: School Harry COPELAND 10 M London Rel: Son Occ: School" Jim Jim and Bev Payne New Zealand [email protected]
Hi Jim The Joseph Copland whose family appear in the 1881 census at Hillmorton is a distant relative of mine. (Half first cousin twice removed, according to my computer) He is Joseph Copland, born 6 January 1845 at Old Luce, Wigtownshire, Scotland, to James Copland and his wife Martha Jane McClymont. (Glenluce is a wee town in the parish of Old Luce) His age is therefore 5 years out, but as he was illiterate he might have had a wee problem with his counting as well. He was married 22 Jul 1873 at Dalmellington, Ayrshire, Scotland to Lizzie McClymont, who was his first cousin, being the daughter of Martha Jane McClymont's big brother Willie. Joseph and Lizzie also had a daughter Mary born 5 Apr 1874 Dalmellington, Ayrshire, Scotland, but she must have died young.
