    2. I should qualify my information. I'm drawing from one man's work. He credits several other people and/or publications for some of his information. His work seems to be well researched. But, keep in mind that his book is not the gospel of Copeland/Coplen genealogy. I found my Copeland in Herman's book and what he states there has been easy to prove and mesh into my records. According to Herman, the first two children born to the immigrant couple in Virginia, were William and John. Herman takes John not one step further. Generation by generation have Johns and Williams to say nothing of the James name. According to the story of this particular batch of Copelands (there were many more), they came with a group. Quoting from Herman: "A land patent was issued to Sir Thomas Luntsford on 24 October 1650 for 3,423 acres 'lying on a bay on the south side of the Rappahannock River' for the 'transport of 65 persons' including William & Mary Copeland. After 1616, every immigrant to Virginia earned a headright (a right to patent 50 acres of land - 100 acres if he came by 1616) for the person who paid for each immigrant's transportation. Incases of repeated entries into Virginia, several headrights could be legally earned." BTW: Mary must've died not long after they arrived in Virginia, or, so it appears. His second wife, Grace, is supposed to have married William c1666, in VA. We know there were other, perhaps unrelated, Copelands in Virginia. The silversmith in the Williamsburgh shops made copies of a spoon found while excavating a Virginia "dig". The spoon has the makers mark on it: Joseph Copeland. There are no ties to him in Herman's work. Also, there were immigrants into Pennsylvania, other parts of Virginia, and on, and on. I wish I could help you identify where your John & William fit into the Copeland picture. I do wish you Happy Hunting jean

    3. Hi Copeland Researchers We are looking for anyone who might know something about a William Copeland who in 1754/5 married Elizabeth Muller in Lancaster County, PA. They had 4 sons prior to William's death in 1759. Could this be the same William who served with George Washington on his Ohio Campaign? William and Elizabeth to our knowledge had a son Thomas who in 1806 left PA and settled in Ontario, Canada. I haven't been able to find their origins, and when I came across the William and John in Middlesex, I was hoping they were mine. If John is missing, he could be the grandparent of my John who was born about 1755, as it seems that John and William are the names that run through this Copeland family. Also, in Greene Co., GA where they ended up, there is a Richard Copeland with wife, Grace, and son, Baldwin. The name, Grace seems to run through Baldwin families as well. Grace is an unusual name and I see it is in that Chowan Co., NC family, too. Does anyone know if I am on the right track and if my John and William of Charlotte Co., VA connects to the Middlesex family? Thanks for any help. Julia French Wood

    1. Re: Copeland Ancestry
    2. Ada I printed your Copeland ancestry message in an effort to see if I could reconcile your findings with Herman Coplen's book, Copeland/Coplen & Allied Families - Immigrants to Virginia. Herman agrees with your findings, mostly. Lancaster County in Virginia was renamed Middlesex County in 1673. William, born in Virginia, 26 March 1667, then Lancaster County, died c1720 in Chowan County, North Carolina. His wife was Christian. (Unknown surname) His brother, John is a total unknown. William & Christian had sons William, John, James, Charles, and, daughters Christian, Sarah, Grace. Son, James, died in Chowan in 1752. Son,William, married Sarah Campen (Champion), he died in Chowan in 1763. He had three sons, William, Jesse, Peter, and 2 daughters, Ann & Judith. The next William was born c1707 in Middlesex County, Virginia, married Peninah (surname unknown) died 1767 in Chowan County, North Carolina. William & Peninah had James, Celia, Josiah, Lamar, Sarah. As you mentioned, we find Charles and Alexander and Isaac, but am not sure which generation in which you find Hugh. You've done a good job. The above is straight our of Herman's book. I've not attempted to really dig into my Copeland branch. The most recent Copeland in my family is my paternal grandfather's mother, Ursula Copeland, daughter of Moses Allen Copeland during the family's residence in Ohio. She migrated to Califronia, following her son (my g.father) and is buried in our Hollywood Cemetery. The "name game" can be confusing when children are named after their father and/or mother and/or uncles and aunts. I hope the above makes sense to you.

    3. My apologies to the list if 2 George Copeland reports come in. I sent Warner & George's reports in at the same time, but cyberspace seems to have swallowed up George's new report. I am going to resend as I really want the two reports to be posted together. Thanks for your patience! Dixie A. Laire Red Oak, Iowa

Graham Copeland's, was a note he wrote on one of these pages that read; " In 1911, I received the following obituary noticed from an Ohio paper: "Copeland"----died in this city April 9, 1911, Orahah, infant son of Julia Graham and James M. Copeland." I guess he was making a note to himself. This didn't go with the Copeland information on this page, as far as I can tell. I'll keep looking. Ada

Sure hope so. These old papers show the Copeland's in Chatham Co., NC., branch originated in Essex Co., Va. The map of NC of the early days shows that from Isle of Wright and Nanaemond Cos. Va. it is a step acrose an imaginary line into Gates, Perqimans and Chowan Cos., NC. From these counties, the family spreaded Southwestward with the flow of emigration through Edgecomb, and Wayne, through Cumberland to Bladen and the present Horry? Cos., SC. NC records are filled with references to the Copelands in the counties mentioned. As early as Oct. 23, 1720, Chowan Co., records the death of William Copeland, who willed his son, William "the plantation on which I now live". To sons, John, James, and CHARLES, he left "the land between Sandy River and Bear Swamp", and mentions daughters Christian and Laura. James died in Chowan, March 13, 1753 and willed to his son, James, "the tract of land on Chowan River. William died in Chowan, Jan. 26, 1763, and mention his wife, Sarah, two sons, William and Jesse, and one dau., Ann Judith. William's branch producted, Hugh Copeland, CHARLES COPELAND, Alexander Copeland, and Isaac Copeland. Each of whom received large grants in Craven and (Greenville?hard to make out.) Counties SC. 1790 census heads of family in NC CHARLES COPELAND-----Perquimans county----one male over 16, and one female. CHARLES COPELAND-----Johnston county---one male under 16, one male over 16, and two females. No slaves were listed for either Charles Copland. These research paper's are from D. Graham Copeland. Only date on these paper's is 1917. Some pages are missing. I found them in Bell Co., TX. I'll keep looking. Ada

I don't believe his parents lived there but John always claimed it as his birthplace. At sometime before 1844 he left VA and ended up in OH where he married, Emaline Wise, abt 1844/5 and started his family. He then migrated west with his wife's parents, Abraham and Mary (Cox) Wise. In early 1847 their 2nd child was born in Iowa. The earliest public record I have found for John is the 1850 census. Hope you can help. Bill
