I have the following limited information from York County records on some Copelands who might possibly be related to your family: The following will of William Copeland, miller, who died in York County in 1759 mentions a Thomas Copeland who may be William's brother: On July 4, 1759, William Copeland, miller, recorded his will (Will Book A, page 205, York County, PA): " ... to Elizabeth my dearly beloved Wife two Shares ... my Estate ... and the remainder to be equally divided amongst my four sons. I do appoint Thomas Copland my Executor over my two oldest Sons to bring them up and give them Learning .. untill they be fit to go to Trades. Likewise Robert Miller I do allow in like manner to be Executor for the two Youngest children ... and to give them learning ... equally divided into Six Shares two Shares fo the Widow." Witnessed by Alexander Hamilton, Michael Tasfer, and Henry Willis ("H" his mark). William's will was probated August 14, 1759. The probate letter was signed by Michael Tasfer and Henry Willis ("H" his mark). The names of many or all of the sons of the above William Copeland are listed in the guest list for the Quaker marriage of their cousin David Copeland and Rachel Stanton at the Warrington Meeting House on November 24, 1756. William's wife Elizabeth may have been the following: "William (Copeland) married Elizabeth Mueller in Germantown in 1754/5, had 4 sons by her and died in 1759." (Posting on Genforum by Dianne Geyssen, December 27, 1999) The Thomas Copeland who was mentioned in William's will may have lived in another county. (I have not come across any records for him in York County.) I believe the above mentioned William Copeland had at least the following three sons: (1) Thomas. On 1779 tax list for York County; no land, 1 horse, 1 cow. Jan. 30, 1781. On tax list for Newberry Township (1777 Township Assessments and Appeals Warrants - York County, LDS 0022231) (2) John. Was on on the guest list for the Quaker marriage of Daniel Bonine, of Derry Township in Lancaster County, son of James Bonine of Newberry Township, York County, and Mary Copeland, daughter of David Copeland (his cousin) of Newberry Township on November 11, 1779 at Newberry Meeting House in York. He was the only male Copeland who attended. (3) James. Was on the 1777 tax list for Newberry Township. (Fines, Assessments, and Appeals Warrants, LDS 0022231). William may have had another brother who lived in York County, named Richard Copeland. The following is what I have on Richard Copeland: York Warrant: C-30 December 18, 1751, 100 acres to Richard Copeland Interest: York 2227 Survey - May 30, 1752, 255.40 acres to Richard Copeland September 19, 1788, 187.113 acres to Richard Copeland February 28, 1770, 181.114 acres to John Malsby, Jr., 118.46 acres to John Malsby, Sr. ("Original Pennsylvania Land Records Series, vol. 15, Newberry and Fairview Townships, Neal Otto Hively, 2002, p. 105) March 25, 1754. Richard Copeland was appointed an Overseer of the Poor for Newberry Township. (York County Quarter Sessions, LDS no. 1449257) September 24, 1756. David Copeland ("Copelan"), son of RICHARD COPELAND, married Rachel Stanton, daughter of John Stanton, at Warrington Monthly Meeting. Richard had a son named David Copeland. I have a lot of information about David if you ever need it.

Do you know of any connection between the Copelands mentioned in your message and Richard Copeland, Philip Copeland, or Thomas Copeland, all who resided in Strasburg Township, Lancaster County, PA in late 1700's to early 1800's? I suspect that Philip Copeland is Thomas Copeland's father, but have no proof. Thanks, Don
Thanks so much....I've gone back as far as John P. Copeland, born 1849. He had a brother Daniel and a sister, Mary. No parent information. Unknown where John was born, but he is buried at Walker Cemetery, Whitwell, TN. He died in 1908. He married Ollie "Ann" Harvey. Nancy

There are 2 opinions on John Copeland son of James and Elizabeth Martha. One says he's the one who went to Ohio. Another says he married Zana Lasater and went to Buchanan Co MO., and that is what I have in my tree. However, I could be wrong, and if so, I want to know which John married Zana! dotsicle
Nancy, I'm with you thru the second James. Wm. b. C 1625 (guess is Dumfries, Scotland); d. C1700 in Middlesex Co., VA Wm. b. 3/26/1667 Lancaster, VA; d. 10/23/1720 in Chowan Co., NC James b. C 1691 Middlesex Co., VA; d.C 1762 in Chowan Co., NC James b.C 1735 Cowan Co. NC; d. C 1793 in Chatham Co. NC John b. 1755 in Chatham Co. NC; d. 1832 in Clinton Co. OH John b. 1780 in Surry Co., NC; d. 1844 in St Johns Twp., Auglaize Co., OH The above information is from Herman Coplen's book: "Copeland/Coplen & Allied Families". It's a well researched book but I've not taken the time, as yet, to research this info myself. Moses Allen b. 1823 in OH; d. 9/9/1887 in Union Twp., Aug. Co., OH Ursula b. 10/6/1859 OH; d. 2/11/1912 in Los Angeles, CA Ursula was my grandfather's mother. She married George Wesley Bechdolt. Which makes her the "end of the Copeland Line" for me. Herman did trace several branches of this family. His info, for me, ended with Moses Allen. But, from there, I had personal information from my own family. Ursula and G. Both are recently updated from my 1999 book: Clifford, H. F.: The Oil Creek Flemings of Venango County, Pennsylvania, with related families. One web site <http://www.fleming.oilcreekgenealogy.net/> deals with the surname Fleming, starting with John and Sarah (Reed) Fleming of Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and follows the descendants of their six sons (Andrew, Daniel, Samuel, James, Edward and Ezekiel) through several generations. Many of the Fleming sons’ descendants were located in Oil Creek Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania. Some of Alden and Rachel (Fleming) Copeland's descendants moved to Cleveland, Ohio. The web site includes a section on “Oil and our Oil Creek ancestors.” The other web site <http://www.mcclint.oilcreekgenealogy.net/> deals with the related families McClintocks and Culbertsons, starting with the known founders in eastern Pennsylvania, Francis McClintock and Patrick Culbertson. Many of their descendants located in Venango and Crawford Counties, Pennsylvania, especially descendants of brothers Hamilton and Francis McClintock of Cornplanter Township, Venango County, and Robert and Jane (Culbertson) McFate of Venango and Crawford Counties, Pennsylvania.

Died. "Copeland.- At the Old Soldiers' Home, near Washington, D.C., on the 17th of April, 1874, where he has resided for several years, John Younglove Copeland, aged 73 years. This faithful old soldier was reared in the towns of Edinburgh and Day, Saratoga county, New York (where he still has relatives) and enlisted into the United States Army more than fifty years ago. He served in the Regular Army over forty years and was in the Black Hawk, Florida, and Mexican campaigns. Like his father, Weeks Copeland, who was a soldier in the war of 1812, John was "every inch" a soldier. He was buried with the usual war ceremonies and his remains rest in close proximity with six or seven thousand other deceased soldiers of our former and latter wars, near the Old Soldiers' Home, one of the most interesting points at Washington, D.C., about three miles north of and in plain view of the dome of the United States Capital. Let no traveler fail to visit this sacred retreat, which is the prope! rty of the Regular Army. Ohio papers please copy."
