    3. Lori, Thanks to you and Dave for this information. A question about your most recent post, what are the numbers after some of your people and locations? For example " Husband John Bass 724,1895" and "Saffron Walden, Essex, England 153". Are these just tracking numbers in your computerized data base? -kk > -----Original Message----- > From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com [mailto:gc-gateway@rootsweb.com] On Behalf > Of address2lori@hotmail.com > Sent: Tuesday, August 30, 2005 4:52 AM > To: COPELAND-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [COPELAND] Re: Copelands of York Co, PA, early 1700's > > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ikJ.2ACIB/1456.1.1.1.1.2 > > Message Board Post: > > Dave, > > Here's another record showing Mary Bass had > three (3) husbands.... > > John Bass and Ruth Alden > > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > ------ > > Husband John Bass 724,1895 > > Born: > Baptized: 18 Sep 1630 - Saffron Walden, Essex, England 153 > Died: 12 Sep 1716 - Braintree, Massachusetts 2299 > Buried: > > > > Married: 3 Feb 1658 - Braintree, Massachusetts 2299,2300 > > Other Spouse: Hannah (_____) ( - ) 153,2295 - 21 Sep 1675 - Braintree, > Massachusetts 153 > > > > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > ------ > > More about John Bass: > > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > ------ > > . You can never have to much imformation! And this is what I was looking for, something about Rachel Copeland...... July 12, 1783. "Rachel Copeland married out to one not a member... Sarah Copeland accompanied her sister to her marriage." (Warrington Monthly Meeting Minutes, LDS reel no. 0387937, p. 283) Thanks so much……. The above record establishes that Rachel Copeland and Sarah Copeland were sisters. So Sarah Copeland is your line….and Richard is as far back as you go right now?.. Richard Copeland b. abt. 1707 David Copeland b. abt. 1730 Sarah Copeland Willis…..sister - Rachel Copeland Glancy b. 1760 Here is some information re: Rachel Copeland b. 1760 PA this book claims she was a descendant of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, (This is what I hope to prove) From the book; And Then They Went West by Darlene E. Kelley Genealogy by Byron Williams (Byron is a descendant of Rachel Copeland and Jesse Glancy) ----------------------------------------------------------- On November 14, 1830, John Cooley Williams married Rachel Copeland Glancy, (granddaughter of Rachel Copeland Glancy) who was born January 6, 1813, and was the eldest of the ten children of John and Elizabeth Shields Glancy. Elizabeth Shields was born in Maryland, November 12, 1795, and was the youngest of the ten children to Thomas and Elizabeth Clark Shields, who came to Columbia in the spring of 1795, and to northern Clermont Co. (Ohio) two years later. John Glancy, born Novemeber 30, 1786, was the second child of Jesse and Rachel Copeland Glancy, who came to Williamsburg, Ohio December 23/24, 1804,from York county, Pennsylvania. Jesse Glancy was the son, some say grandson, of a Scotch-Irish immigrant, who came with cash in a little trunk still preserved, that enabled him to leave a considerable estate. The lining of the trunk is printed with the date 1726. Jesse Glancy was born in 1756 PA, and died September 1, 1831. His gravestone declares that he was a patriot soldier, and tradition affirms that he was in the battles of Brandywine, Monmouth and Yorktown. Rachel Copeland Glancy, of Lancaster county,(was York Co. a part of Lancaster Co. then?) Pennsylvania, died January 3, 1829, in her seventieth year. Tradition traces her line through a Quaker branch of the family of William Copeland, who married Mary, the second daughter of John and Ruth Alden Bass, and Ruth Alden was the third daughter of John and Priscilla Mullins Alden, of the Mayflower fame. After a life marked with strong mentality, John Glancy died December 29, 1874, in possession of much of the large tract midway between Owensville and Goshen, (Clermont Co.Ohio) that his father had taken seventy years before. ------------------------------------------------------------- I haven't been able to tie into the William Copeland who married Mary Bass.....but I'm working on it. 3. I'm sorry I confused the names in my last message. James Dickson/Dixon and Amanda Copeland are the names of my grand-parents. I think that J.I. and Frances (Fanny) Copeland are my great-grandparents, but I do not have definitive proof yet. Does anyone on the list have access to the Alabama will books? J.I. Copeland died in 1922/3 in Russell county, Al and his will would probably have additional information. 3. Barbara, I believe that J.I. Copeland and wife Frances, are my grandparents. If you look at my message of June 4, 2005 on rootsweb you will see my connection. My grandmother, Amanda, was born in Salem, Alabama, and I know from a distant cousin, the names of her siblings which seem to match the names on the 1880 census. I have had to put together things circumstantially because I am now living in western Canada (tt makes genealogical research difficult) I responded to a message from what I think, is a distant cousin on rootsweb (Missy), but she hasn't returned my latest e-mails so I don't know what's happening there. As far as I can guess, the two families living in Pierce chapel, Lee, Al are related as brothers. I don't think that they are related to families in the Dekalb area. I know that my father, Robert Dixon (son of Fannie Copeland and James Dixon) was born in Salem, Lee county, Al. I think that his roots are in Lee and Russell counties and not Dekalb. However, I would be thrilled to have any information either way. Surnames: Copeland Stanton Willis Glancy Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ikJ.2ACIB/1456.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Lori, Thank you for the information about Rachel Stanton. The following is information about David Copeland. It is a lot of information, but the detail is needed to shed light on the parentage of Rachel Copeland -------------------------------------- Information about David Copeland July 20, 1754. David joined the Warrington Meeting. (Warrington Monthly Meeting Minutes, LDS reel no. 22203) October 16, 1756. "David Copeland and Rachel Stanton, both of Newberry, declare intentions: Peter Stout, Adam Red, Margaret Carson and Margaret Stout to inquire." (Warrington Meeting Minutes, LDS microfilm reel no. 0387937, p. 53) November 24, 1756. David Copeland ("Copelan"), son of Richard Copeland, married Rachel Stanton, daughter of John Stanton, at Warrington Monthly Meeting. Attendees included: First column: John Finley Joseph Hutton Joseph Bennett Lidia Copeland Samuel Harris Second column: Richard Copeland (father of the groom? Did he and Susannah and Sarah sign their names at the top of the wrong column by mistake?) Susannah Stanton (Rachel's sister; married Henry Willis Junior, son of Henry Willis Sr, in 1757) Sarah Stanton (Rachel's sister) Peter Stoute Margaret Stoute Samuel Stoute Phebe Bennett (daughter of Joseph Bennett; married John Willis, son of Henry Willis Sr, in 1757) James Hill Josiah Moffet John Micle David Hill Antoney Little Charles Stoute William Willis (first cousin of Henry Willis Sr.) Third column (usually these are close relatives): David Copeland (groom) Rachel Copeland (bride) John Stanton (father of the bride) Sarah Stanton (mother of the bride) Mary Copeland (perhaps mother of the groom) William Copeland (brother of Richard Copeland?) Thomas Copeland (possibly a son of Richard's brother William) James Copeland (possibly a son of Richard's brother William) John Copeland (possibly a son of Richard's brother William) Henry Willis (either Henry Willis Sr. or his son Henry Willis Sr., who married Rachel's sister Susanna in 1757) Joel Ferree Philip Ferree Daniel Stanton (a brother of Rachel) Margaret Carson March 25, 1758. David Copeland appointed Supervisor of Highways for Newberry Township. (Court of Quarter Sessions, York County, LDS no. 1449257) August 8, 1760. "David Copeland, William Stanton, and Daniel Stanton ... accompan(ied) their sister to a priest to accomplish her marriage .... " (This was Sarah Stanton, sister of William and Daniel.) April 11, 1761. David produced a paper at the Monthly Meeting saying he was "heartily sorry" for "accompan(ying) my wife's sister to her marriage ... by a Priest ... " 1762. David was on the York County personal property tax list, Newberry Township ("Alphabetical Listing of the Assessed Inhabitants of York County ...", Special Publication 5, October, 1978, The South Central Pennsylvania Genealogical Society). Last Tuesday of July, 1762 (Book 6, p. 74). David Copeland gave 25 pounds security "for the appearance of Rachel Willis at next Session to give Evidence" in a lawsuit against Ann Miranda. I am not sure who Rachel Willis was. The only person named Rachel Willis known to be living at this time in York County was the wife of a gunsmith named Henry Willis who lived south of where the Yellow Breeches Creek entered the Susquehanna River. But the family of Henry Willis the gunsmith was not related to the Willises who were associated with the Copelands and Stantons. 1765. David is on the Constable's return for Newberry township. Owned 100 acres, 20 cleared, 5 sowed, 2 horses, and 2 cows, and 5 sheep. John Stanton is listed immediately above David. June 14, 1766. "David Copeland is deficient in paying a just debt to William Griffith." (Warrington Monthly Meeting Minutes, LDS reel no. 0387937) December 13, 1766. "David Copeland has satisfied the complainant." (Warrington Monthly Meeting Minutes, LDS reel no. 0387937, p. 140) February 7, 1767. "David Copeland's affairs not so well as he had given to expect." (Warrington Monthly Meeting Minutes, LDS reel no. 0387937) March 14, 1767. "David Copeland has satisfied the complainant." (Warrington Monthly Meeting Minutes, LDS reel no. 0387937) July 9, 1768. "Newberry informs that John Stanton and David Copeland are deficient in paying debts due John Garretson: Joseph Hutton and Riccord Hussey to treat with them." (Warrington Meeting Minutes, LDS microfilm reel no. 0387937, p. 157) 1777. On tax list for Newberry Township. (Fines, Assessments, and Appeals Warrants, LDS 0022231) 1779. David was on the 1779 tax list, Newberry Township. One horse, one cow, no land. Jan. 30, 1781. On tax list for Newberry Township (1777 Township Assessments and Appeals Warrants - York County, LDS 0022231). Between 1775 and 1782 there are several entries in Warrington Meeting records showing that David's father-in-law John Stanton and and wife were in financial difficulties. They apparently became physically disabled (see Benjamin Walker's diary notes below). The Warrington Monthly Meeting contributed money for their welfare .... Eventually, his son in law David Copeland took them in. June 11, 1782. "David Copeland their son in law is willing to take John Stanton and wife and provide for them for about fifteen pounds a year" (p 273). John and his wife died in September 1782. The following two entries are from a diary of grave digger Benjamin Walker (provided courtesy of Edna Morrisey): (year 1782) .... (1) p.15: "5th month, 21st day, 3rd day of the week ..... halled John Stanton to Newbury to David Copland he is to keep John and his wife Sarah for 14 lbs. a year they are a Meeting Charge." (2) p.18: 9th month, 30th day, 2nd day of the week .......Sowing this John S! tanton & wife was Buried in one Grave 10th month, 1st day, 3rd day of the week.......Ditto" ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Parents of Rachel Copeland There is no absolute proof that Rachel Copeland is a daughter of David Copeland and Rachel Stanton, but the circumstantial evidence is convincing. July 12, 1783. "Rachel Copeland married out to one not a member... Sarah Copeland accompanied her sister to her marriage." (Warrington Monthly Meeting Minutes, LDS reel no. 0387937, p. 283) The above record establishes that Rachel Copeland and Sarah Copeland were sisters. Sarah Copeland married Jesse Willis about June 1783 in York County (I have not checked the primary source for this marriage. I got the marriage date from Family Tree Maker's World Family Tree No. 7, Pedigree No. 3436. I believe the information is credible, based on various other evidence.) Jesse and Sarah Willis were accepted into membership at the Warrington Monthly Meeting on May 13, 1786. May 11, 1793: "Jesse Willis of Newberry with Daniel Bonine and Thomas Jennings request advice, as they are planning to move into a new state to settle, at a considerable distance from any monthly meeting." August 9, 1794: "Jesse Willis and wife Sarah and issue: William, Isaac, John and David removed from Warrington, York County PA to Westfield, N.C." Quaker records show that they eventually settled in Wayne County, Indiana. The above-mentioned Daniel Bonine was married to Mary Copeland, who is a third Copeland sister: Mary Copeland married Daniel Bonine November 17, 1779 in Newberry Meeting, York County, PA ("100 Years at Warrington," Margaret B. Walmer, page 86). Mary signed with a mark (capital letter "M"). People listed in the third column (family members) are the following: Daniel Bonine (groom) Mary (M her mark) Bonine (bride) Rachel Copland <===== Sarah Copland <==== Mary Bonine Hannah Bonine Hannah Dain John Copland Wm Matthews William Randles Timoth Kirk John Garretson James Hancock James Bane In the above guest list Rachel Copeland and Sarah Copeland are listed one line below Mary Copeland (now Mary Bonine). The three sisters Rachel, Sarah, and Mary may have had a little sister named Ann: March 8, 1788. "Ann Glancey formerly Copeland fante (sic) married by magistrate" (Warrington Monthly Meeting Minutes, LDS reel no. 0387937) The "Glancy" who Ann married may be a brother of Jesse Glancy, husband of Rachel Copeland. July 8, 1786. "Sarah Willis appeared and acknowledged her fault in accompanying her sister to accomplish her marriage by a hireling teacher." (Leslie B. Potter, April 2002) Sarah Willis is the Sarah Copeland wife of Jesse Willis. The marriage might have been Ann Copeland's marriage to Glancey. Probably need to re-check the date. ------------------- I do not know who Richard Stanton's wife was. Her first name might possibly have been "Mary," judging from the sequence of names in column three of the guest list for the marriage of David Copeland and Rachel Stanton (above). ----------- Dave Willis

David was the son of Richard Copeland. (Do you know the name of Richard Copeland’s wife?) Looking for proof that David and Rachel Copland had a daughter, Rachel Copeland. Rachel is my gggggg Grandmother. Rachel was born in York Co. Pennsylvania in 1760 and died January 23, 1829. She is buried in the Rapp Cemetery, Stonelick Twp. Clermont County, Ohio. (just east of Cincinnati, Ohio) I visited the cemetery last March. In the History of Clermont County it states that Rachel Copeland was from an English Quaker family. Lost their money at the time of the Revolution because they adhered to the King. History on Clermont County, Ohio…… a sketch on Jesse Glancy says his wife Rachel Copeland is related to John Alden and Priscilla Mullens of the MayFlower people. Rachel Copeland married Jesse Glancy in 1783 York Co. Pennsylvania. *Jesse Served in the Revolution. Grandfather born in Ireland. Moved from York Co, PA in October of 1805 (another account states December 1804 and that he brought the children of his deceased brother William, with him) with his wife, Rachel Copeland, three sons, William, John and Joseph and daughter Elizabeth, a nephew James and a niece, to Clermont Co. Ohio. The book: " History of Clermont Co. OH" 1880 by Rockey and Bancroft, gives an account of their difficult journey as the weather grew colder and heavy snows impeded their travel. So, Rachel Copeland and Jesse Glancy lived in York Co, Pa for about 22 years before moving to Clermont Co. Ohio. I am trying to prove that her parents were David Copeland and Rachel Stanton. Would love any information you have for David Copeland. Kind regards, Lori L. Mulroney address2lori@hotmail.com
