    3. Jean... James and Elizabeth did not have a Martha, but their son Daniel DID (1789), and she is my ancestor. They also had a Sarah, Ann, Zana, and Nicholas. Not that I wanted to add to the confusion, but..... !!! LOL dotsicle

It is SO easy to get these Copeland families confused! Sometimes the only clues are in the approx. dates of birth. What I have: James, the son of James and Diana, was born abt 1734 in Chowan Co NC. The James who married Diana was born abt 1691 in Middlesex Co VA., Herman indicates James, s/o James (1691, Middlesex,VA) & Diana, m. Eliz. and theyt had: John, Daniel, James, Lillah, Silvey, Liddy, Elizabeth, Franky, Susannah, Sally Dolly, David, Anne, Cleo He was, apparently, not aware of any other marriages. But, looking at the list of kidlets, it looks very possible. From Bill Copeland, I have a wife named Elizabeth Martha Johnston, only. But, notice that there are two girls in the list of kidlets named Elizabeth and Sally - which hints that the Sally you have as a wife, could've been #2. It's unusual to get so much information on a spouse in this line which makes me doubt that the Elizabeth Martha Johnston that I have is just one person. Note, there's no girl child named Martha - tho, she, if she was another wife, could've been past child-bearing age Back to John (b. 1780 NC, d.1844 OH) There's a little info on him from Herman: "In Surry Co. NC with wife Judith Rawson in 1792 until 1812 when he moved to Ohio. He bought 300 acres of land in Surry Co. NC on 18 March 1788. On 30 Sept. 1811, he sold that 300 acres. He's listed as a taxpayer in Greene Co., OH, Silver Creek Twp in 1813. He moved w/son Joseph, to Liberty Twp., Clinton Co., OH by 1820. He lived in that county until he died in 1832." What's interesting to me is that Herman's index has not one single Nicholas listed. It has to be a different line than the one I'm pursuing, for example. Or, Herman missed something down the line. When I can get the time to do so, I'll try to pass on the references - people - and books that Herman mentions in his book. I repeat, that book is not available to purchase, as far as I know. The author is dead. Ohio Gen. Society has a copy which can be lent to members - thru the mail. jean according to my notes. And the James who was the son of Nicholas and Nancy was born abt 1697 in Isle of Wight, VA. dotsicle ==== COPELAND Mailing List ==== To contact the List Admin: mailto:COPELAND-admin@rootsweb.com To unsubscribe from List Mode: mailto:COPELAND-L-request@rootsweb.com?subject=unsubscribe To unsubscribe in Digest Mode: mailto:COPELAND-D-request@rootsweb.com?subject=unsubscribe AOL USERS: Send an email to:COPELAND-L-request@rootsweb.com (In Digest Mode change the "L" to a "D") with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message. ============================== New! 3. Eddie, did you try the BLM website? Eddie Davis <ec21davis@sbcglobal.net> wrote:Is there anyone on this list that could help me find out what happened to a piece of land? I'm researching the family of James Copeland and his wife Diana ____. James died in Chowan County sometime around 1752 as his will was made on March 13th of that year. In the will he mentions "a tract of land on the Chowan River" which he willed to his son James Jr. James Copeland Jr. is who I'm trying to find. My ancestor named James Copeland married an Elizabeth Johnson and moved to Chatham County, NC where their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1762. But on the Internet are two conflicting ancestries of James. One has his parents as Nicholas Copeland and Nancy Lott and the other has James Copeland and Diana _____. There is no data for Nicholas, but as James who married Diana left a will, I'm hoping I could find what happened to the land he willed to his son James Jr. If James Jr. sold it soon after, I'm hoping his wife's name will be mentioned and maybe this will be some documentation to settle this confusion. If he lived there past 1762 then I will know that James Jr. can't be my James, as I know he was in Chatham County by then. So I guess I'm wondering if there is any will or land transfer record for a James Copeland after 1752 and before 1762 or 63. -- Eddie Davis Ec21davis@sbcglobal.net ==== COPELAND Mailing List ==== To contact the List Admin: mailto:COPELAND-admin@rootsweb.com To unsubscribe from List Mode: mailto:COPELAND-L-request@rootsweb.com?subject=unsubscribe To unsubscribe in Digest Mode: mailto:COPELAND-D-request@rootsweb.com?subject=unsubscribe AOL USERS: Send an email to:COPELAND-L-request@rootsweb.com (In Digest Mode change the "L" to a "D") with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message. ============================== Search the US Census Collection. 3. Eddie, I'm sorry. I"ve not been able to get a copy of Herman's book, for myself. Our local gen. library has a copy, thanx to the California Gen. Society that had an extra. Ohio Gen. Society has a copy and they will lend books to members - by mail. Herman died in the early 1990s and I've been unable to find his family up in the Sierra foothills. His book was self-published and, as far as I know, there are no more. My copy is a Xerox of his book that I did on our library's copy machine. What a task! But, I had it spiral bound and it's been very useful. I have one other source: William Copeland. He has been collecting all Copeland info for years. But, I've not heard from Bill for a long time and he was not well the last time I contacted him. You mentioned proof, I believe. I'm trying to be very careful about what I say. I have lots of info but most of it has come from others. I've not dug into that family prior to the Civil War. So, I'm offering help for those who would like to research and find proof on their own. Unfortunately, I have a "Tree" somewhere on the internet - done ages ago. I can't find it! Do you believe that? But, I did qualify my tree as information that needed to be researched by the reader. I have James, b. in Chowan and d. in Chatham NC m. to Elizabeth Martha Johnston b.1733 & d. 1823 - in Chatham The only child I have followed, from them, is John - he's my line - married Judith Rawson. This's is not the result of research by me, BTW. Came from Herman And Bill Copeland in Iowa. According to Bill, James had 3 wives. The children numbered at least 14 - maybe 16. 3. I could find no James in the time period you mentioned. Herman has two indexes one for the Copeland surname and one for Coplen. He also indexes some of the non-Copeland/Coplen surnames involved with our lines. I checked both indexes and the pages noted and found no James with a birth date in early 1800s that matched your criteria. The change in spelling is difficult to follow. It occurs in James Coplen's listing in the early 1800s. He was born in 1802 in VA. He sired a James, of course, who was born in 1828. My impression is that the name spelling changes have been arbitary. I cannot specify the who and when without going thru the book, page by page. I'm sorry. Herman followed the "line" as he chose to - to himself. But, there are many branches, even in his end of the family. Herman lived "up the hill" from us in the Sierra foothills. He died in the early 1900s, if my memory is accurate. Good luck in your search. Johnston was on the 1830 Chatham Co census; shortly afterwards he moved to Ray Co MO where he died in 1866. His wife Sarah went on to Oregon with the children! You will find a lot of dissention on James and Elizabeth's son John. My info is from the research of Jesse Macon Lawrence, but not from his "online tree" which is comprised of data sent to him by others and is not correct. His personal research marries John (@1775) to Zana Lasater and sends him to Buchanan Co MO.; some other researchers marry him to Judith Rawson and ship him to Ohio. I believe the Missouri info is correct and that the John (@1753) who went to Ohio is the son of David Copeland and Elizabeth Douglas. But I don't argue about it, LOL! 3. Note to all::I've been using Herman Coplen's book as reference and a guide to research. He's done a terrific job of extensive research. He begins with Wm./Mary/Grace as immigrants to Virginia. According to HC, Wm. & Grace had two sons born in Virginia. He only traces William (Jr.) and neglects one other son, John, born in VA C1669. Why, I don't know.........I haven't dug that deep, there. William (Jr.) m. Christian (no surname). They had: Grace, William (III), John, James, Charles (Sr.), Christian, Sarah....all born in Virginia. Some died in NC. Going with James: he married a Diana (no surname). They had, in NC, William, John, James, Mary Staying with James s/o James above, he m. Elizabeth (no surname). He was b. in Chowan Co. & d. Chatham Co in NC. James & Elizabeth had: John, Daniel, James, Lillah, Silvy, Liddy, Elizabeth, Franky, Susannah, Sally, Dolly, David, Anne, Cleo. That's the end of Herman's interest in any of the Copelands named James. I had not noticed it when I went thru his book. My line descends thru the Johns, from there. I was fortunate that Herman traced the Copeland line sufficiently for me to find my paternal greatgrandmother, Ursula Copeland Bechdolt, b. in OH & died in Los Angeles. PS Herman lists no one by the name of Nicholas, in his index of Copelands. Sounds like that was another bunch of immigrants to our country. There's a line that came from Loudon Co. in VA. And, apparently, some entered the US thru PA. From VA, to Chowan and Chatham in NC was a common "path". Herman claims that the branch I came from moved out of NC into OH to leave a slave-holding state. Also, One of the brides was a Quaker and ostrazised for leaving her faith......stories, stories, stories. We all have them. Herman's book has some not too great fotos - I'm working from a zerox copy of his book. It's unavailable. He had it printed, himself, and he has since died. Been unable to locate his family. jean MacAonghais <a-celt@cox.net> wrote: There are several Copelands with the same first names and almost the same ages in that area. 3. There are several Copelands with the same first names and almost the same ages in that area. They're probably all first cousins, named after some paternal grandfather. 3. Is there anyone on this list that could help me find out what happened to a piece of land? -- Eddie Davis Ec21davis@sbcglobal.net

    3. I am hoping someone can answer your question too, cousin. I descend from James Jr Copeland and Elizabeth Johnston's son Daniel (this is one of my 2 Copeland lines). I have seen the online discrepancy and I believe some researchers have mixed up two of the several Nicholas Copelands. Nancy Jones dotsicle
