thanx. I called Mrs. Coplen, also. She didn't give me her son's phone # and I was unable to get it from information. But, obviously, it would have been a waste of everybody's time. I spoke w Mrs Coplen and she does not have any more books. I also spoke with her son and he said he also did not have any left.
Jean, Herman Coplen died in 1992. I bought the book from his wife. Her address in 1994 was Betty Coplen 7815 Shimmer River Lane Citrus Heights CA 95610 She told me at that time she had about 15 left. She also told me her step son Phil had about 30 left. At that time Phil was living in Dallas Texas. She said he worked for IBM and moved alot. I don't know if Betty is still living or where Phil is now. She did tell me Herman is not mentioned in the book. He only listed his father who was also Herman. If you can find Betty or Phil you might be able to get a copy. She was selling them for $20.00 at that time. Thanx Cathy. Are you related to Herman? I guessed at the date of his death - poor memory. I had been searching in our library for some way to connect to him when someone checked the vitals and told me he had died. The address I had was, I think, in Shingle Springs - Sierra foothills. I'll be passing thru Sacto on my way to SLC on Monday, maybe I can get a real copy of Herman's book. The machine copied book I have does me fine and I can scribble in it, if I desire. I've made no effort to look thru the branches that are not mine. I stopped at my great grandmother- she was the last Copeland in our family. Her brother was killed in the Civil War, along with a cousin. She, Ursula, is buried in Hollywood - Los Angeles - with her husband, George Wesley Bechdolt, and some of her children. Will try to contact Betty. Finding Phil might be a daunting task. Thanx again, jean Cathy Coplen <ccoplen@gte.net> wrote: Jean, Herman Coplen died in 1992. I bought the book from his wife. Jerry, I hope you're right. But, Herman's references were from personal contact with other researcers of a branch of the Copelands. There were books, also. Some of which were yet to be printed. So much to check into. jean MacAonghais <a-celt@cox.net> wrote: I think Herman's references are all correct. Thanx, Barbara. I'm hoping to have the time to look up the book and all the others on my list. But, as I cautioned, the German side of my family is in need of deep research. jean BWGood@aol.com wrote: For the person going to Salt Lake, here is the reference to the book by Michael G. Also did not know that he was a surveyor. > I received the following summary from a researcher of Nicholas Copeland. I am sure if we look at court records, we could uncover the item about Nicholas dying before his court appearance. It does not say he was killed, but that he had died before the Fall term of the court in 1742. He was living in April 1742 when he signed two deed transfers. ****** By 1721, much of Essex was divided into three additional counties. These were: Spotsylvania County in 1721 which then changed in 1734 into ORANGE COUNTY. This is where Nicholas Copeland died as a Surveyor of the Court in 1742. His death is documented only because he was to appear in court as the court appointed surveyor to give a written description of disputed land that was the focus of a lawsuit. His two assistant surveyors presented the material requested by the court and note that Nicholas Copeland was not present nor signed the document in question since he had died prior to the Fall Term of Court, 1742. In 1728 a portion of the northern section of Essex county became known as CAROLINE COUNTY. Nicholas Copeland owned some land in this area which later went to his son Peter Copeland. From this I have surmised that Peter was the oldest son since he was the only one who did not leave Virginia and remained behind while the other sons left for new lands opening up in North Carolina. I offer this up to you to illustrate the man did not move any great distance. But from 1651 until 1734 the region fell under several different name and boundary changes. It may be even more confusing to know that Rappahannock County was made up of three smaller parishes, one of which was known as Sittenburne Parish, which is where Nicholas had his land, This parish changed its name into two parishes: St. Mary's parish and St. Anne's parish. It is in the St. Anne's parish in 1704 that Nicholas' land is then absorbed into the newly created Essex County which was formed in 1692 with not so clearly defined boundary lines. ****** Barbara

I will just have to take Herman's reference list with me to SLC. Some of those books may be on the shelves there. Wish me luck. jean MacAonghais <a-celt@cox.net> wrote: ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jean Mattox" To: Sent: Wednesday, September 14, 2005 2:05 PM Subject: Re: [COPELAND] Copeland DNA project > You really put a new light on this line. Well, that's what Herman recorded. The OFP reseacher came up with a book, which he sent me copies of a few pages, entitled The Copeland Family of Moore County, NC. It's date is January 1984, authored by John W. Copeland, but without a publisher's page. In it the author documents that there were two Peter Copelands of about the same age, one who died in Caroline Co., VA, or Pittsylvania Co., VA around 1800, and one who died in Jackson Springs, NC around 1778. He shows that the Peter Copeland son of William and Sarah (Champen) was the one who moved to Jackson Springs, NC. MY Peter Copeland, however, was the Caroline County man, and his lineage is traced directly to me. He's the one who arrived from Great Britain in 1743. He and his brother were factors for their father who was a Scottish merchant. > Herman says that they were members of the group brought to the south bank > of the Rappahannock River in Lancaster County, Virginia. > Sir Thomas Luntsford was issued a land patent on 24 October 1650 for 3,423 > acres and for the transport of 65 persons including William & Mary > Copeland. > That information comes from a book Herman cites: > "Cavaliers & Pioneers" by Nell Marion Nugent, Volumes I, II & III, > Genealogical Publishing Co., 1979 > Let's start with that information and get some input from all of you, out > there. > Does anyone have a copy of that book? Well, not the entire book. But I have copies of the referenced pages. The info you cite is on page 200 of Volume I. In addition to confusion between the two Peter Copelands, there are more William Copelands as well whose lines are mixed up. A researcher once told me that digging back into old notes and research documents which you had filed away is like dating an ex wife: somewhat familiar but not very much fun. When I received the LARGE envelope of documents on my Copeland line from the Order of Founders and Patriots, I threw up my hands and filed them away. Tonight was the first time I have looked at them since Nov 2002. It was indeed somewhat familiar but no fun at all. Hi list , is there anybody researching the name COPELAND from the salford ( manchester ) area . Regards Barry.

It was at this > time that the Copelands and children appear in North > Carolina. > I remember now we discussed this before. I have a different Nicholas Copeland who died in 1742 and was surveyor. He was married to Dorothy Ripley. There is a land deed in 1725 with Dorothy clearly named as his wife. The land he was selling he inherited from his grandfather, Nicholas Copeland, who died in 1721. Land deeds verify this. I have James as his son who married Lydia Dill. Nicholas was in several court documents along with a William Copeland, who was probably his brother. This would account for the William in the record of "James' uncle William Copeland". My best assumption as to why there are two different family lines for Nicholas, assuming we are dealing with the same person, is that Dorothy may have died and he married a second time to Nancy Lott. Does anyone have any legal record of a Nicholas Copeland married to Nancy? The pedigree in the DNA project that has Nicholas Copeland who married Nancy Lott as a descendant of Joseph Copeland of Isle of Wight is a DNA match to Reuben Copeland in the DNA project, who is a descendant of Nicholas Copeland of Old Rappahannock and Essex Co., and of Nicholas Copeland and Dorothy Ripley. This DNA match could be accounted for if the pedigree back to Joseph Copeland is incorrect, or that both families of Copeland descend from a common ancestor. I don't care which one of these is correct, but it would be very helpful to know if all these Copelands were descended from a common ancestor in England as it might help lead to the early ancestry of both John Copeland of Isle of Wight and Nicholas Copeland of Essex Co. To determine this, we would need a direct male descendant of another son of John Copeland and Sarah Ratcliff of Isle of Wight to participate in the DNA testing. I don't know if his son William has descendants. Maybe someone else does know. When Thomas Taberer made his will in 1693 he only names one grandson with the Copeland name, his grandson Joseph Copeland who was named executor of his will. So I am assuming that Joseph did not have male siblings living at that time. William Copeland of the Mary and Grace saga, also needs a descendant to be tested in the DNA project to fill in the other missing link. I don't see a pedigree that goes back to him and I wonder if there are male descendants who would be willing to participate in the DNA testing. Cheers, Barbara Good
