Dan first married Rebecca Hatley and had a son John about 1866. He is on the 1870 census in Montgomery Co AL. In 1880 he is widowed and evidently John has also died; Dan is listed as "D Copeland" and living with Rebecca's brother W J Hatley in Washington Co TX. Unfortunately Dan's mother Mary Copeland did not know where her husband was born, and Dan therefore did not know. However, the family had to have traveled through Georgia because Dan's older sister Sabra was born there about 1839. Dan is on the 1850 census in Montgomery Co AL as Daniel "Coplan", age 18. In 1900, Dan calls himself "65" which is older than his real age, and does not know his birth year.

I'm not researching either of these individuals but I've noticed the messages going back & forth regarding them. I think someone else brought up some messages that were posted a while ago by a Michael Copeland, and that brought to mind that I had seen those, too. They are on the Genealogy.com Message Board, for the Copeland Surname. I'm repeating one of his postings, but there are also a bunch of others which were exchanged by him and other posters at the time, which you might also want to take a look at. James Copeland and wife Lydia Dill Copeland were in Madison County, Alabama in the Mississippi Terr. in 1811 when he took sick and died. All of his children except for James Copeland, Jr. had married and left home. James married after 1820 and he and his bride Catherine Gillis and Jameses mother( Lydia) went to Wayne County, Tenn. They remained there until their death and all three are buried in a family cemetery. John and Joseph Copeland and their wives were in South Carolina, went to Georgia, for awhile went to Wayne County, and moved possibly into Kentucky. Jason Copeland, Jacob Copeland, David Copeland, James Copeland. James Copeland and his sister, Elizabeth Copeland Abbot, are living next door to each other in the 1810 Iredell County, NC census. She appears to be widowed with children. In the 1820 census, James Copeland and his family are residing in Johnson County, Indiana. In the 1830 census, he has moved to Jackson County, Indiana, where his brother Hugh had been residing in the 1820 census. Hugh moves on westward. James is joined by his sister's boy John Abbot later. Brother Hugh Copeland, had been residing in Mecklinberg County, NC before moving to Jackson County, IN. There is also a Dennis Copeland in Mecklinberg County, NC. Is he James, Hugh, and Elizabeth's father? Dead end.
