I did not see a Saphronia M COPELAND in the 1880 US Census for TN but there is a listing for an S.M. COPELAND... Household: Name Relation Marital Gender Race Age Birthplace Occup. Father Mother Stat BP BP J. R. COPELAND Self M Male W 73 TN Farmer NC TN Sally COPELAND Wife M Female W 68 VA Keeping House VA VA Clarinda COPELAND Dau S Female W 46 TN Keeping House TN VA S. M. COPELAND Dau S Female W 20 TN At School TN VA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Source Information: Census Place District 10, Overton, Tennessee Family History Library Film 1255274 NA Film Number T9-1274 Page Number 347D I would venture a guess that this SM is the granddaughter of JR and the daughter of Clarinda... Not sure if this fits into your research or not...SM would have been born around 1860. You could compare it to the info on the 1900 Census that you say you have. I'm researching Elias (sometimes it was shown as Elijah), but the family Bible indicates Elias Copeland. He was born in Alabama and went to Texas for a short time. He came back to Arkansas, settling in Woodruff County.
Can I get some info on this family. Parents, death, movement The following info is from 1880 Census Marietta, Cobb county, Ga I can't seem to find them anywhere else. I maybe not looking correctly. Hi list, Can anyone help me i am looking for site's that do Surname history that you can print out , ( free ones if there are any ) . Regards Barry Copeland. Manchester,England.
On the Alabama Copeland line; There are several lines in Blount County, Alabama ca 1840 to 1880 My research shows several families already there prior to the arrival of Archibald Joshua Copeland ca 1856 Harold
Now you have all the info I have. That's where I'm stuck at!! It's like they all disappear.
I think I said it wrong in my last post. What I meant was that WILLIE may have been the son of William and Matilda, and that Matilda may have been your William's first wife. Pratt is still there in Lawrence Co in 1930 and his mother lives with them, but in that census he is "William P" Copeland. dotsicle
I went back over the data, looked at the censuses again, re-read my notes, and this is what I get: The "Wallac" in 1910 is not Wallace, it is Willie. Nancy has had 5 children and 4 living, BUT there are 5 kids in the home. WILLIE is a child from William's first marriage! On to 1920: Nancy is "Nancie", 63 and widowed. With her is Lurana, the "Louzana" from 1910. Two doors away is who I believe is our Willie and his family. It is possible that your William is a son of William Sr Copeland and Matilda ----. This family is in Lawrence Co AL in 1870 with 2 sons, then appears in Walker Co AL in 1880. By then they have 4 sons and a daughter, but the kids only have initials. There is a daughter "L", 5, who very possibly could be Lurana. She is the only Copeland girl of the right age with an L initial in Alabama, that I have found. dotsicle
I find William in 1900 in Lawrence Co AL; does not know his age/birthdate but was born in AL as were his parents. There are Pratt, Lala, Etta, Belmer, and another child Wallace born "Oct 18887"... yes, it is written like that! Nancy was born Aug 1854 in AL, is 45, says her parents were born AL. 1910 shows some things different: Nancy gives her age as "49" and says her father was born in GA. Pratt, Etta, and Gertrude are at home PLUS there are two Copeland stepchildren; Louzanie/Louganie 32 and Willie V 22! Both these stepkids were born in AL., but I can not find them in either 1880 or 1900.This just adds to the confusion, doesn't it!! Located Pratt's WW1 card; he claimed exemption due to supporting mother and wife. He was tall and slim with gray eyes and brown hair. dotsicle
I'm sorry, I haven't gotten back that far on my Copeland line. I can't get past William Copeland in Lawrence Co. Died btwn 1900/1910. Married Nancy Thompson abt 1888 had 4 kids: W. Pratt, Lala, Etta, and Gertrude Belmer, my grandmother. If I some accross anything further back, I'll let you know.
Where did you get that info on Mary? Who was she married to? I'm working on a Copeland line in Alabama. William Copeland married Nancy Thompson abt 1888 in Lawrence Co. Do you have any further info? Nancy

On the 1850 census for Montgomery Co AL, there is a "COPLAN" family which shows Mary and 4 children. In 1850 she does not know her birth state, but by 1860 she remembers that it was SC, and the census man spells her name right. dotsicle
