Jan. 11, 1894 Oberlin, Lorain Co.,Ohio, was the father of John A. Copeland, who was hanged for his participation at Harpers Ferry. At one time I had thought that maybe John Sr. was a member of my Copeland family, but now I'm not so sure, since the records I have found on him indicate he was freed sometime around 1815, when John Sr. was 7 years old. However, none of the records I've found indicate exactly what County, nor what his owner/father's name was, it's possible it wasn't even Copeland. There are some tantalizing sentences in some of the Chatham County Copeland wills that I've read, which could indicate that there may have been a non-white mistress for at least one of them, but nothing is definitive. My Copelands seem to have descended from the same line as the other Wake County Copelands who were Free Colored People living there in the 1800's, probably the ancestor being Isaac Copeland, who died there somet! ime between 1830-1840. I have however been able to trace John Copeland's wife, Delilah Evans,b:1809 Orange Co,NC/d: Nov.29, 1888 Oberlin, Lorain Co.,Ohio, family back to Mecklenburg Co.,Virginia, which is a connection to my Evans family from the same area. Indications are that her parents were Charles Evans, died before 1820, probably in Orange Co.,NC, and Frances Hunt, b.1785/d. btn 1850-1860 in Orange Co.,NC. Both the Free Evans and the Copeland families of NC, seem to have been pretty " shy" when it came to recording any kind of documents, since there are very records around giving any kind of details about their relations, they certainly rarely made wills, and any deeds found, you have be very speculative about. Do you know about any Indian connection for this family???? The reason being, my husband is a Copeland, and there was the Indian legend. I noticed in my research that some of the Copelands seemed to travel ahead of the forced removals. My husbands family went to Indiana. The Arkansas (That was Arkansas birth state wasn't it?) birth state could be right. My family had the Indian legend also. The same pattern was true for them. When I traced back to no records, that may have been the reason, and that may be the reason for evasive information on the census, if they could pass. Lillian

I had a great uncle who died in Clay County, KY around that time from TB. The family said that he died in a war.
Fred, I seem to recall reading some years ago about an outbreak of tuberculosis or typhoid that had stricken certain regions of North Carolina around 1900, but I haven't found where I read that in a long time. I'm bringing this up because I have a number of ancestors who died around that time in Warren & Halifax Counties in North Carolina, and I know there are there are others also researching ancestors in various counties in NC who may have found the same thing. It wasn't the Great Spanish Flu Epidemic, which seems to have peaked around 1918, but I have heard about the TB outbreak in particular, from older family members. There seems to be no reference to that in any of those websites I listed, however, so I tend of believe it was more of a region specific outbreak, and it could also be something for other researchers to keep in mind about ancestors who disappeared quickly around that time. Lisa, To my knowledge, I am not related to COPELANDs from Laurens, SC -- but I just may not have found a link yet. My gr-gr-gr grandfather Ripley COPELAND was born in Chatham Co, NC and moved to Sumter SC (via Chesterfield County where his brother Aaron remained). I think RIPLEY was the surname of a female ancestor (but not sure) that was handed down. Similar to my middle name (HUDSON) being my grandmother's maiden name. I have listed below my known ancestry: Nicholas COPELAND (VA/NC) Ripley COPELAND (Chatham Co,NC/Sumter Dist,SC) (Mar 1761- 6 Jun 1843) Elias COPELAND (Sumter Dist,SC/Bethune, Kershaw Co, SC) (4 Feb 1802 - 18 Sep 1881) Thomas Ripley COPELAND (Bethune, Kershaw Co, SC) (14 Jul 1845 - ?)
