What, if anything, does anyone know about the following person: Copeland, John . . . . . . 21 (100 acres) (Listed as "Copland" in land warrants) Went from Belfast, Ireland to Charleston, SC on the Ship "Nancy" in 1767. Also aboard this ship was a William Moore, whose descendants intermarried with the Copeland family some years later, possibly a coincidence, but maybe not. Also, I have long been tracking James Russell Copeland, father of Demetrius Colvin Copeland. James Russell says in a census, 1880 I think, that he was born in TN. I came across something the other day that mentioned a Demetrius Copeland who would have been of the right age to be James Russell's brother in Overton Co TN. Does anyone know anything about the old Demetrius from TN? It is an unusual name. Thanks, Karen Rice

Well...... My clock says it is 11:35 p.m. here in Texas on a very pleasant Christmas Eve. Hopefully, all your preparations are done and all is quiet....<g>. So... now it is time for you to sit down, have a cup tea and relax a bit......<deep relaxing sigh>. Now.... here are some ideas you might like to try for those moments of relaxation <g>... First of all..... track Santa's travels by going to the NORAD web site. http://www.noradsanta.org Then go to google and type in the search terms: Santa Claus Genealogy It is amazing what you will find. It appears that genealogists do like Santa Claus...<g>. And then....... while you are on google try typing in any surname you are interested in and then add another search term like.... History, Genealogy, Family, etc. Again... you can find all sorts of interesting information and sites. or.... Try search terms like... State Historical Societies State Archives It is amazing how many states are beginning to provide online data and indexes to various information. It is rather fun to just explore. And finally...... and most important..... I hope each of you is able to spend time with those you love - reliving memories of the past and making new memories for the future. Merry Christmas, Emma

Donald Lee Copeland Posted: Monday, Dec 12, 2005 - 04:01:28 pm PST COLUMBIA BASIN HERALD, MOSES LAKE, WASHINGTON STATE. Our father Donald Lee Copeland went to soar with the Eagles on Dec. 6, 2005, after a courageous fight with cancer. He was born Dec. 2, 1930 in Portland, Ore., to Arthur and Nina Copeland. He was raised in the Portland area, joining the military at a very young age. Dad was in the military for 27 years. His travels took him many places, including Larson Air Force base. He fell in Love with Moses Lake, and decided to retire here in 1969. While stationed at Larson, Dad also worked at Tri State in sporting goods and during the holidays as Santa, which was also aired on the radio. Dad loved to play Santa and convince the kids he really was Santa, often visiting their house after work to convince them he was really him. Dad enjoyed coaching and umpiring baseball games. Hunting and fishing were among his favorite sports. Dad enjoyed hinting with his Tri State buddies and his son Rick. In his later years, Dad enjoyed going fishing with his son-in-law Al (always managing to catch mor! e or bigger fish). Dad was an active lifetime member of the Eagles Lodge, he held several offices including president twice, he was a past president helping at state as a new Arie chairman and currently chairman of the board of trustees. Dad was proud to be part of an organization that felt like family. A few years ago, Dad joined in the Dart league. He enjoyed playing darts until his health wouldn't allow it any longer. During his cancer treatments many of his friends from the Eagles stepped up to help drive him to Wenatchee. He enjoyed those times and shared many stories and recipes along the way. All of his children inherited his love for animals, cooking and volunteering. Dad is survived by his children: Rick (Donna) Copeland and Donna (Al) Anderson of Moses Lake, LeAnn (Ron) of Slidwell, La., Angel (Ricky) of McRae, Ark. He also leaves behind grandchildren: Ricky (Luta), Misty (Mario), Dustan, David (Megan), Chantel, Krista, Cody, stepgrandchildren Laure (Craig), Mandy! (Jerry), Christie (Drew), Jesse, Raymond, Scotty and 13 great grandch ildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Loretta Tally of Oregon and Delores (Norm) Kling of California. He also leaves Missy his dog. She was his special comfort these last few years. Dad also leaves behind special friends at the Eagles -- Fran, Dee, Ann, Willard, plus many more. A celebration of his life will be held Dec. 17 at the Eagles, 1517 W. Broadway Ave. at 1 p.m. Dad requested it be a celebration. He wants everyone to have fun, share stories and remember good times. Dad also requested that everyone dress casual, the family requests no flowers, instead donations are to be made to a Relay for Life team set up in his honor. Dad did not want anyone else to ever go through this disease. Donations can be mailed to PO Box 164, Moses Lake, Wash, 98837. The family would also like to say a special thanks to Dr. Kearns, Annie Anderson, Dr. Steffans, Marty, Liz, Angie and Judy. You truly are special people.

Hi Larry Just by chance I have been tracking this same family. My Great grand mother was a Copeland. I happened accross Joseph N. Copeland in Etowah county Al 1910,1920,1930 and in Lathamville DeKalb county 1900. Anyway, I went as far back as Richard Neely Copeland, his wife was Maryline Hafley. I have just read a from a great helper, that Richard Neely Copeland gives us a choice of fathers 1 William or 2 Joseph. Larry is the name of the man that has been helpful to me. He has researched Copeland's quite sometime. Perhaps he can be of some help to you. I will look up his e mail address and send to you. I still have not found for sure the parentage of My Great Grandmother Sarah Hannah. I thought that your family Richand Neely Copeland might offer some hope but I'm still not sure. So, I'm not much help. But, Larry maybe. I'll get back to you. Regards Barb SC

We were comparing notes a few months ago and she and I both agree that it's possible that John's father may not even have been a Copeland, we just didn't know. She, too, was looking for some documents that would give the name of John's father, but so far, no luck. And yes, I did come across the Oberlin site some time ago, and it has provided me with excellent documentation of some of the families that settled there. There is extensive work on John A. Copeland, of course, and I have included a lot of the info I found there in my files. It also helped me in my research of Delilah Evans, whose ancestry I had been investigating. I have both Copelands and Evans in my family tree, and have several marriages between the two lines. I am fairly certain that Delilah Evans was the daughter of Charles Evans and Frances Hunt who were both living in Orange County in the early 1800's. They are included in my online tree. I did not know that John Sr. was supposed to have had 2 siblings, that is very interesting. I now wonder if the Thomas I found living in Wake County was John's brother? That Thomas was born abt 1790 and first showed up in the 1840 census records, while the Isaac Copeland whom I have supposed was his father was last in the same location in 1830. Thomas had married 2 Evans sisters, in 1821 and 1837 and between them have found about 5 children, the males of which I was able to follow for the most part. Strangely enough, one of the sons seems to have been a Wilson Copeland, which I haven't found much else about after 1850; one of Delilah Evans brothers was named Wilson Evans, who also moved to Oberlin with John Copeland. I have been trying to find the origins of Isaac Copeland, a free man of color, because I have suspected that he may have been related to Cato/Kader Copeland, b. 1758 in Halifax Co.NC, whom I believe was the ancestor of the free Copelands in Halifax & Warren ! County,NC. My Copelands are Benjamin and Joseph, brothers who both were born in Halifax Co. and whose children intermarried with each other as well as other free colored people of Warreh & Halifax Counties. Most of my findings on these families are in my online tree at: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=dwilliams-1&id=I253 I haven't added some of my later data yet, which includes the fact that Frederick had died on Feb. 5, 1916 in Hanover, Indiana, and the fact that he had been married. The census records are kind of ambivilent where Frederick is concerned because they have him listed as living with his sister named Mary in 1900, yet the same woman appears in 1910 as his wife, which is even stranger because his wife had died in 1896. I have also followed their son, William, who was a lawyer and a policeman, and murdered in Arkansas in 1885. He had a wife and 3 children, which I'm still also researching. Yes, I would very much like to know what you may have on the identities of John Copeland Sr.'s siblings, they could be a key to some of the puzzles I have encountered about this family. Deloris

Some time ago, I came across an article about the John A. Copeland, Jr. family, who was famous for his involvement in the incident at Harpers Ferry, and was hanged for it. There was an interview with a Thomas Copeland of Wake Co., who was elderly, and said that he was about the only Copeland still living in the County, since most of his family had moved to California some time ago. Incidently, although this Thomas Copeland indicated that he was probably a descendant of John A. Copeland, whose family moved to Oberlin, Lorain County, Ohio, I doubt if he really was because the John A. Copeland family that lived in Raleigh, Wake Co.,NC, married Delilah Evans, of Orange Co.,NC, and then moved to Ohio about 1847 was NOT from the same family as the Copelands that remained in Wake County a bit longer, from which that Thomas Copeland was a descendant of. The John A. Copeland family had been a former slave freed sometime around 1815, according to written documents, while the earlies! t black or mulatto Copeland who lived in Wake County, was Isaac Copeland, d. btn 1830-1840, was the ancestor of the remaining Wake County Copelands that were free people of color. I had found a death record for Naomi Copeland in California, and that article confirmed that I had the right person. I haven't finished researching the family, so there most likely are others who can be found living there.
