    1. Re: [COPELAND] Start of My Line
    2. Hi Carolyn From your info your William was born in 1801, which would make my "Hugh" 20 years older then him. Chances of them being brothers is possibly but I really do not know. Many families during that time had very large families. Nicholina Armstrong, Hugh's wife came from a family of 18 children. And I believe that James and Anne Copeland (Hugh's parents)also had a large number of children.I have extensive info on both Copeland and Armstrong from Ireland - 1780s to US..present day.My Copelands (and Armstrongs & Montgomerys) were extremely involded in the Methodist religion. Many became Reverends . In Ireland, John Wesley often preached and stayed at their homes. Hugh had sons named William and Henry BUT they both went to Australia in 1856 and died there. Do you have any idea where in Ireland your Copelands came from? Immigration info ?Possible years? I really do not have info on Hugh's brothers....in fact I am only just working on it, and got their names recently. Many times these families used the last names of those who married into the family as "middle" names. A way I have connected to some "cousins". Common names within this family were Armstrong, Montgomery, Henderson, Bracken. If I come across future info I will keep you in mind. Good Luck Sue in NY

    3. wow sue. we have some very common names in our lines.. let me give you and the rest of the group my info to see if we have a connection... i havent had alot of luck finding info on my william and mary copeland besides some arkansas census and alabama and texas info.. take a look and let me know.. this is an old email between a fellow genealogy buddy and myself. we have alittle additional info but the email will show you the basics.. thanks.. carolyn copeland- hennen p.s. sorry for the typos. my keyboard needs to be replaced.. :)) COPELAND INFO: It took some digging but I finally found Henry C Copeland's family in TX in 1860 and in AR in 1850. I also found his and his brother's service in the CSA, too. 1860 Hopkins co TX, Bright Star, pg 190 note: Bright Star is now known or also known as Sulphur Springs *gh Mary Copeland 44 SC George 24 AR Henry 20 AR Columbus 18 AR Adaline 16 AR James 12 AR Annie 10 AR Eldridge 7 TX Annie 2 TX After I found this one I started digging in AR in 1850...that takes a little more doing because the 1850 census is not indexed on Heritage Quest, so I went to each county where I found an index for 1850 in census-online. I looked through all of them...and the very last county that had any Copelands listed was where I found them. They were listed alphabetically and I found them in Scott Co AR. :) 1850 Scott co AR Boone Twp, pg 140b William Copeland 49 NC Mary 37 TN George W 14 AR Henry C 9 AR Christopher C 6 AR [Columbus in 1860 census] Adaline 4 AR James M 3 AR Ann 4/12 This site http://gen.1starnet.com/civilwar/9thinf.htm is where I found Columbus C Copeland age 20 b abt 1841 pvt., Co F enlisted 12 Oct 1861 at Bright Star Henry C. Copeland age 21 b abt 1840 pvt., Co G enlisted 8 Oct 1861 Tarrant I found George W. Copeland in the 4th Regiment, TX Cavalry (4th Mounted Volunteers) at http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm After finding all this I got to wondering "why would Henry go to AL when he couldn't find is family after returning from the war?" So I looked up the 9th infantry and found this: 9th Regiment, Texas Infantry (Maxey's) (Young's) 9th (Maxey's) Infantry Regiment [also called 8th Regiment] was organized during September, 1861. The men were recruited in Galveston and Paris, and Titus, Llano, Collin, and Lamar counties. It moved east of the Mississippi River and saw action at Shiloh and Perryville. Later it was assigned to General P. Smith's and Extor's Brigade. It fought at Murfreesboro, served in Mississippi, then participated in the campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to Nashville. Ordered to Alabama, it ended the war at Mobile. This regiment lost thirty percent of the 226 engaged at Shiloh and thirty-eight percent of the 323 at Murfreesboro. Few surrendered in May, 1865. Its commanders were Colonels Samuel B. Maxey, Wright A. Stanley, and William H. Young; Lieutenant Colonels William E. Beeson and Miles A. Dillard; and Majors James Burnet, W.M. Harrison, and James H. McReynolds. http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm Since he had finished his service in AL, maybe he liked it there and/or had met the Eubanks family and decided to return. I don't see anything that indicates that his family had ever been there before. It will take some more digging to determine what happened to his family. There is a James B Copeland in 1870 Hunt co TX that is abt the right age to be his brother. Hunt is a neighboring county to Hopkins. note: henry "c" is henry clinton copeland which makes me wonder if william or mary are connected to the clinton name. God i hope i'm not related to Bill.. hahahaha.l anyways, ive heard that the parents often used the mothers maiden name for the son's middle name? ive found and gotten more info and documents on some of these people and also know that henry clinton copeland married sarah frances eubanks and when she passed away he remarried to her sister martha jane aka mattie... please let me knowif any of you are related... thanks.... 2. Dear Jerry: I am very intereste in your inquiry....for several resons, the first....I received your message via the Copeland @rootsweb.com.....strange, I thought....not directly from you, and then you said you hve been "watching my results hoping to find a connection with my line".....This means you have access to the results posted on the ??????? Probably on the Copeland, Coupland small stuff...not the Family Tree DNA Project......this is the part that intrigues me.???? Not hearing directly from you ???? I am very eager and willing to share any and all results from my many, many years of research of my Copeland line....and have had marvellous results in establishing a direct line with Aaron Copeland. 1762/1839...I still have people researching this line in order to find out just how many generations separate us.....and which son or grandson connects me with Aaron. There is far more informatiion that we possibly could exchange..but e-mail is NOT the suggested medium....I suggest yo get me your telephone number and I shall call you, if it is agreeable. Now to answer you relative to your question.....In my reseach....going back to my great gandfather Thomas F. Copeland, born 1828.....I know not where he was born ..I find him last listed on the 1960 Fed. Cen. Cheraw Dist. Chesterfield Co..S.C. along with his wife Sarah, and five children....I do not find any Baldwin listed in any of my research.....he may be there....and I could lead you to several persons who might be able to assist you. Thomas C. Copeland, Jr. Louisville, KY 40291 Tel. No. 502-231-7718.......let me hear from you....?

My Copeland DNA comes via my mother's family, so I am unable to participate in the Copeland DNA project. I've been watching your results hoping to find a connection. For quite some time there had been a Baldwin Copeland b:circa 1728 who is the brother of one of my direct ancestors. Your project results now show 13 members in this group of my "relatives". I'd like to know if anyone had documented a connection between my uncle Baldwin and any of the earlier Copeland ancestors. Thanks, Jerry Crumly a-celt@cox.net

    3. Greetings, My Copeland branch was probably Scots-Irish although I cannot prove that claim. My great, great grandfather was born in Tennessee in 1826, and I know nothing of his birthparents. So, I'm afraid that my research will not be of help to you since I cannot trace my American ancestors to Scotland/Great Britain at this time. Are you aware of the Copeland DNA testing that is being done. I believe it is a fledging effort, and I have yet to try it, but intend to.
