God Bless America Melody - Irving Berlin, 1918; revised 1938 Irving Berlin, 1918; revised 1938 Intro (spoken): While the storm clouds gather far across the sea, Let us swear allegiance to a land that's free, Let us all be grateful for a land so fair, As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer. |: God bless America, land that I love Stand beside her and guide her Through the night with the light from above From the mountains To the prairies, To the ocean white with foam God bless America, My home sweet home. :| ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- The original version of GOD BLESS AMERICA was written during the summer of 1918 at Camp Upton, located in Yaphank, Long Island, for Yip, Yip, Yaphank. He never used the song and it remained tucked away until 1938. In the fall of 1938, Berlin decided to write a song about peace. He recalled his "God Bless America" from twenty years earlier, altered parts to update popular sentiment, and was introduced to the world on November, 11, 1938, by Kate Smith.

Hasn't enough been said about this. I belong to other lists where you would be removed for this kind of discussion. It does not, in any way, help me or anyone else find needed information on our Copeland lines. Everyone has their own views and opinions regarding it. I, for one, agree that it's not fair nor is it ethical. It's why I refuse to submit my family tree to Family Treemaker everytime I'm prompted to do so. Owning the rights to my information is not an issue with me. I very much would like to share it and compare with others but detest the very idea that someone else profits from the hard work of others. I am forever indebted to those who have so generously shared their files. As long as there are gullible people others will prey upon them to sell them anything and everything. I am a long time eBay member and shake my head sometimes at what people are willing to pay for things. Sometimes it is for things that they can get for free with a little bit of digging. Sometimes it's for legitimate items but people bid way over the retail price that the item is available for. Sometimes it's for things like "muffler bearings" or "radiator fluid" for air-cooled engines. Thank goodness the Elian Gonzales situation is over! The raft he came to America on was up for grabs, as was his left over lunch and dirt from his yard. When was the last time you saw someone selling family name coat of arms? Come on, how real is that? They have every conceivable name you can imagine. If they don't have the one you give them they will "research" it and have a cool looking Coat of Arms and history of the name the next time you see them. For everyone's sake, can this subject be laid to rest and this list used for it's intended purpose? Thanks, Tony Higgins

I agree that we all benefit from sharing our research information. It's like one person having a piece of the puzzle and by sharing we can bring it all together. However, I was very surprised when I found that the familysearch.org site had information on my grandmother and her family that was obviously information that I had submitted to a rootsweb list and some of the information that was on my Grandmother was actually incorrect. I had no idea who the research submitter was (their name was listed as being the submitter) but I soon learned that they were interested in selling information to me and was not in the least bit interested in correcting the errors their research contained. I have my grandmother's family Bible and have birthdates, death dates, marriage records, etc. My family research has always been document. The reason I know that this is information that I submitted via Rootsweb is due to the fact that when I first joined the list, I was a little concerned about putting much information about my grandmother (birth dates, date of death, etc.) on the internet. So I said circa XXXX date. I think research should remain free, after all much of it is taken from public records. Okay so enough of that!!! I haven't posted to the Copeland list in sometime....Hoping someone out there has an Elijah. What about it???? According to Goodspeeds Memoirs of Eastern Arkansas, the Copelands came to Arkansas from Alabama. Elijah's wife was Margaret (Henderson??) and they had Mary Elizaabeth, Wade and thomas. Evidently the family settled in TX before the birth of Mary Elizabeth, because she was born there in 1860. Linda
If I write a book that says "christopher columbus was married to Anna and is buried in Toledo" the book is copyrighted but the facts are not. Anyone can write another book that states the same facts. Cora I have seen this site and many others and I have been through this discussion with folks like you before. It is a waste of time because law is based on reason and you are not being reasonable and logical. Listing facts on standard formated family group sheets and thinking you can copyrightt it is not is not reasonable or logical. You wrote, "Family group sheets that they may be violating copyrights UNLESS the submitters signed a copy releasing their rights to their own research. I think it is outrageous and illegal. I think we deserve better. A class action suit against these rip-off artists should be very welcomed." These are pretty strong words when you have no facts and jump to conclusions. Give it up, Give it a rest, get a life. I have not seen one response that agrees with you. Let's get back to research and agree to disagree. You do a lot of research. I reviewed every email you sent to the list for the last two years and you have shared a lot of info. Thank you for that participation. That is what I meant about being constructive. Have a nice weekend in Massachusetts where it is cool. We got 10 minutes of rain yesterday, first since July 1, so I am happy today and hope it will rub off on others. Can anyone furnish further info on this family? Name: Alice 'Ella' C. BARTON --------------------------------------------- Birth: 21 May 1871 England Death: 1961 Burial: Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Boston, Allegheny Co., PA. Sec. C Father: William BARTON (ca1841-1899) Mother: Alice (1845-) Childhood: Alice came to the USA with her parents when she was only four years of age. The family settled in Pennsylvania and then moved to Ohio and then to Boston, PA. All within the space of about six years. A lot of moving for a little child and not too easy for her parents either with 6 and more children to be transported in days when transportation was not a simple matter. Alice's early travails unfortunately presaged her future hardships. [1] Marriage: Joseph L. Copeland and Alice Barton married on Jan. 4, 1888 by Wm. L. Douglass, Justice of the Peace. Alice's father, William Barton, signs permission for her wedding as she is under age. Witnesses were Jas. Edmundson & Wm. Duncan of Boston, PA. [2] Ella was widowed at age 29 with three small children; her father having died two years prior to her widowhood and her mother was living with her when her husband, Joseph COPELAND, died. Eventually she remarried to a Mr. EICHER. Despite all her hardships, Ella lived to be 89 years old, longer than her husbands and children and several grandchildren! Spouse #1 --------------------------------------------- 1: Joseph Lander 'Orlando' COPELAND Birth: 23 Dec 1864 Boston, Elizabeth Twp., Allegheny Co., PA. Death: 25 Jul 1901 Boston, Allegheny Co., PA. [3], [4] Age: 36 Death in Brown Mine #2 [Mining accident] Burial: Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Boston, Allegheny Co., PA. [5] in Sec. C with his wife, her second husband and his two daughters. Occupation: Driver [in 1888]; Coal miner [in 1901] Father: Joseph B. COPELAND (1825-<1890) Mother: Margaret J. NICKLE/NICHOLS (ca1834-1897) Joseph's death hit the headlines of the McKeesport Daily News, unfortunately, on July 25, 1901. These headlines read: "A Fatal Fall of Slate" with the sub-heading: "Orlando Copeland's Life Crushed Out at Boston Mine No. 2 This Morning". And the rest reads: "Orlando Copeland of Boston, PA. was instantly killed while working in No. 2 mines at that place. The fatality occurred at 10 o"clock this morning. The fellow workmen of the unfortunate miner at once began the work of rescue. The slate was removed, and the rescuers found their companion, but life was extinct. The victim of the disaster was born and raised in Boston and was 35 years old. He was the son of the late Joseph Copeland, who also resided at Boston, and a son-in-law of William Barton who was killed in the mines at Greenock two years ago. The deceased is survived by a wife and three small children. Mrs. Fleming, of Boston, is a sister." [4] The following day the McKeesport Daily News ran this obituary: "The sad death of Mr. Orlando Copeland, of Boston, PA. was a shock to the whole community, as well as to the members of his family. Mr. Copeland, as was stated yesterday, was at work in a coal mine when he was caught under a fall of slate. He was killed instantly. The body was taken to his home. He is a member of the Jr. O.U.A.M., and also of the M.E. Church and Sunday School. He was in his 37th year. He is survived by his wife and three small children and seven sisters and two brothers. Funeral services will be held tomorrow in the M. E. Church at 1 o'clock. Interment in Mt. Vernon Cemetery." [6] * The 1876 Atlas of Allegheny Co. shows a W. H. Brown Coal Co. in North Versailles Twp. It was located just up river from Port Perry (at the junction of the Monogahela River and Turtle Creek). *In 1897 the McKeesport Daily News contained the following article: "Browne's mines on the Yough closed down because the company wanted the men to accept a reduction in wages. the men have been getting 2.25 cents a bushel ..." [7] Joseph's middle name is either Lelander or Lander. It is written in both ways in various documents. He was probably given the nickname "Orlando" to distinguish him from his father who was also a 'Joseph'. Marriage: 4 Jan 1888 [8] US Census: of 1900 lists Joseph, born Dec. 1865, married for 12 years, a Day Laborer, renting his house [living on the same street as his sister and her family, Mary Copeland Fleming; This road is now Rt. 48]. Living with him are his wife, Alice, born in England on May, 1871. She emigrated in 1872 [at age 2] and had three children of whom are living at the time of this census. Their children: William J., born Nov. 1889; David, born Aug. 1896 and Stella, born July 1897. Joseph's mother-in-law, Alice Barton, born in England on July 1845, is living with them [although this Alice is also counted as living as a boarder with the Robert Thomas family --- see Alice Barton's notes] [9] Children: William Joseph 'J.W.' Hello Copeland Listers, Is anyone tracing Copelands from County Armagh, Ireland? I have a James Copeland bc1835, son of James Copeland, who married Mary Anne Blakney at Clare of Tandragee, Armage in 1859. Would love to find siblings of my James.
