Does anyone have any documentation, other than the Copeland/Coplen book which shows Richard Copeland (b:VA ca1750) as the son of Peter Copeland? Has anybody ever found a will, etc? Jerry Crumly Pensacola

He may have been British or Canadian. She is very interested in finding any living relatives, but her search is not suppored by her mother or grandmother. Any information on this Maurice is appreciated - I will forward it to her.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ikJ.2ACIB/1161 Message Board Post: The will of my ancestor Richard Copeland, son of Peter Copeland of VA>NC, has caused many questions. What was Richard's middle name? His signature clearly seems to be "R. W. Copland" even though his name is widely published as Richard Peter Copeland. He had a known grandson named Richard Peter Copeland - was 'Peter' this Richard's third given name, or have people (not seeing this will) made erroneous suppositions? Who was his second wife? Where/when did they marry? His first wife Sarah Dunn died (07 December 1790 in Putnam Co. GA) when their youngest daughter Sally was two months old, so he surely would have remarried soon thereafter. Who is Washington Jeter and what is the relationship to Richard? The bequest to him was sizeable, especially in relationship to the amount in the bequests to others known to be Richard's children. Is Washington Jeter the son of his second wife? or the husband of one of his daughters - if so, which one? This will was written 24 July 1823; Richard died 05 November 1823 near Eatonton, Putnam County, GA. I have transcribed it as exactly as I can discern from the original document, as spelled. Will filed in Putnam Co. GA 15 Nov 1823. (Will Book B Folio 10) His will distributed his property as follows: Wife – (Unknown second wife of Richard Copland) $5.00 Theodrick Webb - (m. daughter Christy Copland) $500.00 William Cook (m. Richard's niece Nancy Copland in 1811, Marion Co. GA) $100.00 Washington Jeter - relationship??? "one Negro man named Antony the Land I had of Henry Williams and all my household goods" Baldy Copland - $2.00 with what he has got Edmond West - (m. daughter Elizabeth Copland) $2.00 Jesse Mosely - (m. daughter Mildred Copland) $2.00 Samuel Mosely - (m. daughter Sally Copland) $2.00 William Copland - * John Copland - * "All the rest of my estate I desire to be equally divided between William and John Copland" If anyone has any other pieces to this puzzle, I would be very grateful to learn any clarifying information. I descend from son John Thomas Copeland.
