All I know about Nathaniel is that he was b in NY according to census records and the info from a book called "The Cowles of N.A." mentioning that he married Sophia Lucinda Cowles in Pultneyville, Wayne Co., NY in 1835. They went from there to PA where their first child DeWitt Henry Cooper was born. There was another Nathaniel Cooper and several son's in PA, may have been related but can find nothing on DeWitt's birth place in PA - so, another dead end, for now at least.
