I'll jump to your last paragraph first you said your grandfather Guy Colin Scott Cooper. How did the Scott get in there?? My gr grandparents were John Scott b ca 1800 (possibly in NY) and Sarah or Sally Cooper b ca 1802. They had at least 10 children that I am aware of starting in 1826 with Jane, Charles, George, Squire, Evelinda, Magee, Sarah Elizabeth, Robert, Zaida (my gr grandmother) and Harrison. Do any of those names sound familiar. I have copied down (since 1970 all the Coopers and Scotts that I can lay hands on. I have some info on John Cooper of Sussex, NJ but still haven't found Sarah or Sally. Hope we can make a complete circle out of this. He did marry Melissa Scott in Appanoose Co by John C. Levy Eld. Book 2 page 107. Jacob was a twin, his brother is Jacob Josiah "Joe". His father's name is was also Jacob b. Sept 15, 1816 in Adair Co., KY. He married Nancy Ann Cooley 9 Feb 1836 in Adiar Co., KY. They both died in California. Jacob Felix's grandfather is also Jacob Fees b. abt 1779 in Pennsylvania (1850 Federal Census). He moved sometime before 1805 to North Carolina where he married Sarah Grimes. I haven't pin-pointed the year they moved to Adair Co. KY. They moved to Des Moines Co., IA where Jacob Felix was possibly born about 1836. Jacob Felix's father moved to Adams Co, IA at some point after 1850 but returned to Des Moines county with his father and other Fees relatives. The oldest Jacob Fees died in Des Moines Co., IA in 1856 or so. Jacob Fees' father was a Baptist minister at one time. They were very active in the church in Appanoose Co., before moving to California in 1880. Marriage Notes for MELISSA SCOTT and JACOB FEES: According to Charles Fosterling, a Grandson of Florence's, Jacob supposedly left the family in the gold mining camp of Diamond City, Montana and went to preach to the Indians. He was found some years later living near his parents in Northern California. Notes for DEWITT H COOPER: Source: 1880 Census, Jackson Co., Oregon. Lists age as 44 - would make bd 1836. 1860 census, Toolesborough, Louisa Co., Iowa he was age 23, makes bd 1837. DeWitt was a miner - he was in Diamond City, MT where he married Mellicient (Melissa Scott) 20 June 1868. Census: 1870 Diamond City, Meagher, Montana Terr. shows DeWitt as 32 years old and a miner. Melissa Scott Fees was divorced from Jacob Fees. Daughters Cora, Florence were Fees. Edna was a Cooper (census, 12 July 1870 shows Edna as ten years old) - Guy Colin Scott Cooper and Geneva Malissa (name as found on headstone, Baker City, Cemetery, 1994 by Ellen and Carroll (Cooper) were DeWitt's and Melissa's. She was not listed in the 1880 census and family lore says Melissa died in childbirth in Jackson Co. OR. She is possibly buried in the cemetery in Phoenix, Oregon - have been unable to locate a a record of her death or where she is buried. Census: 1 June 1900 shows DeWitt living in Weatherby, Baker Co., Oregon. He was listed as a farmer. He lists his birthdate as Nov. 1841, Pennsylvania; father born New York, Mother Indiana (not correct - she was born in New York - 1880 census). DeWitt 58 years old (59 in Nov.) Cause: Broncho - pneumonia - duration: Days, Due to: Arteriaceleratic (sp?) heart disease - duration: Years Notes for IDA ANN (IDA MAE) JESSUP: Ida Ann Jessup apparently changed her name of "Ida Mae", aparently preferring it to Ida Ann. The family moved from Brunswick, Chariton, MO to Baker City, Baker Co., Oregon about 1901. Her mother's family, the Clerkins, were found in Baker City by 1898 in the City Directory. In the 1900 Baker City Fed. census a listing was found for Martha Calhoun as head of household so the Jessup family apparently followed the Clerkins to Baker City. Ida Mae Jessup Cooper is Buried in Multnomah Park Cemetery, 82nd & Holgate, Portland, Oregon Children of GUY COOPER and IDA JESSUP are: 6. i. MAURICE DEWITT5 COOPER, b. March 01, 1942, U.S.S. Ashville, Java Sea, S. Pacific Ocean. Notes for LYLE DEE COOPER: Enlisted U.S. Navy, about 1939/40. Died when his ship, the USS Ashville was sunk by the Japanese in the Java Sea when a number of British, Dutch, Australian, and American gun boats were attempting to keep the Japanese busy in that area so they couldn't concentrate any major forces on the American continent. The ships were also slowly attempting to reach Australia from Subic Bay in the Phillipines where they were first attacked. (These ships had been previously stationed on patrol on the Yantze River in China due to Japanese incursion into that country. When warning came that they were massing against the U.S. the ships were ordered to the Philippines - when it was attacked Dec. 8, 1941 they tried to get to Australia, while fighting delaying actions against the Japanese. Official Navy Fle: The ASHEVILLE, a patrol vessel, was lost in the Java Sea South of Java approximately 200 miles east of Christmas Island. All personnel aboard the vessel was placed in a missing status as of 1 March 1942. .... The Report of Casualty, dated 12 December 1945, the status of MIA was changed to presumed dead as of action of the Secretary of the Navy. Eleven officers and 157 other enlisted members were presumed dead by the same action. Following the surrender to the Japanese, statement of repatriated prisoners were taken at Calcutta which confirms that there was only one survivor of the USS ASHEVILLE. SISK, a seaman second class, gave this story, 'According to Fred Lewis BROWN who it is believed was the only survivor of the USS ASHEVILLE. the following is the account of the sinking of the ASHEVILLE: 'Brown was asleep in the fire room when the firing started. Prior to the firing Brown had heard no general quarters alarm given so that it would seem the battle had not been anticipated. Upon running to the deck after hearing the firing he saw that the bridge had been hit and badly damaged and also the forecastle had been hit. As soon as he got top side he abandoned ship as the rest of the crew were doing. Brown noticed that many of the personnel who had been on the deck during the firing had been killed. The survivors were scattered in the water. After the ASHEVILLE had sunk, three Japanese destroyers came along side of the survivors but only one threw out a rescue line. Brown grasped a line and was hauled aboard ship. The rest of the survivors were left in the water. Brown was transferred from the Japanese destroyer to a Dutch hospital ship and taken to Makassar, Ellebes, N.E.I., where he was made a prisoner of war. Nothing was ever heard further about the remaining members of the crew.' Sisk said 'it was while I was in prison at Makassar that I came to know Brown and many times he talked to me about the sinking.' Brown contacted dysentery and heart trouble and pelegra of the stomach. Two officer's stated Brown died on 18 March 1945 from dysentery and was buied in grave No. F109. 5. She was born April 14, 1907 in Montavilla, Multnomah, Oregon, and died September 25, 1996 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon. Notes for MAURICE DEWITT COOPER: Source: Carroll Lou Cooper, 1995. Maurice, more commonly called "Bud" or "Big Bud" worked at Inman-Poulsen Lumber Mill off and on during the "Great Depression". He later worked for Ralph Yeast Garage on 82nd and Glisan in Portland, Oregon as a mechanic. Maurice was a natural mechanic and he enjoyed the work. He died at age 47 of a coronary thrombosis. He had been diagnosed with high blood pressure just days before his death. Was a heavy smoker all his life and loved his meat, potatoes, and gravy to which he always added salt before tasting, all of which probably contributed to his early death. He lived long enough to know his frist two grandchildren, John Maurice Sedey and Susan Kathleen Sedey - both redheads (as was their father). Susan was just 11 months old when he died, John was almost three. By 1995 there were 17 great-grandchildren born into the family. There were 14 grandchildren - the oldest, John M. Sedey died Jan. 19, 1987 and one, Peter Cooper, a twin to Kimberly Ann Cooper, died shortly after birth. Maurice would have really enjoyed all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Maurice was a redhead with a very mild temper - couldn't bring himself to really spank or discipline his children - always left that to his wife, Rhoda Napier Cooper. Notes for RHODA NMI NAPIER: Rhoda was born in Montavilla before it became a part of the City or Portland - when her brother, Barnes Logan Napier was born less than two years later Montavilla had been annexed to Portland. Rhoda died just a few miles from where she was born, at the Gateway Retirement and Care Center on 102nd and Glisan St. She was placed in the home the last week of July, 1996 and passed away two months later. She suffered from dementia as well as congestive heart failure. Daughter, Catherine m Joe Walker, lived Malvern, Iowa. Sister of Esther, Marian m Alvin Donaldson, Riverton, Iowa. I saw your query on Roots-L and think the following may be from the family you are researching. I was married for 6 years to Willis John Summers, b March 26, 1926 in Iowa on the farm of his grandparents, Henry and Alice Sipes. His father, John Summers apparently died before Willis was born - according to Esther he was kicked by a horse and developed gangarene and died about 6 months before the birth of their son. I have put in all the information I can remember of the family as told to me by Esther. She died in Medford, Oregon Sept. 16, 1979 and was sent back to Nebraska for burial at St. Paul's United Church of Christ (Osage) in Cook, NB. She and her second husband, Alfred Welensiek were m. Nov 22, 1938 and lived on a farm near Cook, NB. She moved to Medford, OR to be near her son, Willis sometime after Alfred's death. Esther Sipes, b 1897 probably PA, dau of Henry and Alice Sipes. M 1st, John Summers, probably in Iowa ca. 1914, he d 1925. Daughter, Catherine Summers, m Joe Walker, lived Malvern, Iowa. Sister of Esther, Marian Sipes, m Alvin Donaldson and had a farm outside Riverton, Iowa. Henry Sipes was born in PA but I don't know where. I think Willis' address may be 1053 E. 2nd St. Weiser, ID 83672. His sister, Catherine may still be living at 203 Prospect, Malvern, IA 51551, phone 712-624-8723. If these do not work out I have a friend who knows where Willis is for sure and would probably send on a letter to him for you - she is also into genealogy so knows how important these things can be. iii.
